Wow!! Just Wow!! The local Mercedes Benz dealer quoted a minimum of $2500 - $4000 to repair the pan roof on my boyfriend's 2003 MB C230 kompressor. They also refused to repair the sunroof recall, due to the pan roof having an open / close issue. I found this video, spent .40 (that's forty cents)and ten minutes, and the repair was completed, tested, and reassembled! Someone buy this man a beer for making this SUPER HELPFUL tutorial on how to repair this issue! A million thank yous!
You are a life saver! My pan roof finally stuck open today... We are going through a hot dry summer here in South East England, I messed around with this swearing and cursing then found your tutorial... It just started raining as I fixed it! Cheers mate!
I just tried this out and it worked. I was very surprised becaue I didnt think it would work on my vehicle. Such an easy fix! Thank you for taking the time to make this video.
God bless you for that video! Yestarday in the service told me that it will cost 225 euro to fix this "BIG" problem!!! Today i follow the instructions and now sunroof works perfekt. Thank you!
Great write up! My motor noise is all gone. I left the factory plastic bushing on the Torx head, then 5/16” lock washer then 1/4” flat washer. When I removed the assy the SOS button didn’t come off. The biggest challenge for me was re-installing the mirror. As a previous commenter mention, use some sort of lube as its very difficult to load back in. I used hand sanitizer to lube it up but it requires a lot of force to put back in. Especially with the limited space. The SOS button assy should be installed after the mirror to allow for easier push ability when re-installing the mirror.
Just bought a 2008 E550. Fixed the pano roof in about 15 minutes. Your are the man...... will definitely be getting some grease to keep it working smoothe.
Fantastic video. Thank you guys. Fixing the mirror back was easy!!! Just get a dead-weight hammer and a big, long bolt. First fix the control panel back in place for room, put a little grease roundabout the mirror socket and the edges of the spring. Finally set the mirror in place, use the long bolt to hold it firmly with one hand while you use the other hand to hit firmly but gently on the head of the bolt till you hear the click!!!
Thanks! I followed your instructions and was able to close the sunroof which was stuck open. The washer didn't make the grind go away, but I was able to crank the motor and close the roof. I noticed that if I pushed up with the screwdriver on the motor crank, it would go in a bit and the grind would go away. But as soon as I let up on pressure, it would pop out again. Also, I couldn't figure out how to make the shades return to closed. Anyway, awesome video! It saved me hundreds!
Usually the washer will put enough squeeze pressure on the motor to stop the grinding. The shade will start returning to close once the motor opens and closes fully a few times, some sort of calibration feature/thing.
You're amazing! Worked like a charm on my 2008 E320 Bluetec with Panorama and shades. Strange thing happened: car was sitting outside in super cold, and the sunroof tilt motor activated itself and tilted one side partially up. Would not go down and buzzed as in video. Finally was able to follow your steps, with some trepidation as I was afraid of breaking the plastic. A lock washer in the first bolt not completely tight got the sunroof tilted back into position immediately! But the shades would not work. Scratched head. That helped. Looked in owner's manual, thought perhaps they were out of time. Tightened a bit more - and they started working like they should. Big smile. But getting the mirror back in place . . . grrr. Having to go look for a second pair of hands to try tapping it into place while I hold it angled in . . . Thanks again!
Wow, Bro you are the best. I watched another video stating to pull down the roof lining and all sorts to remove the spin disc motor and add a washer on the back of the pink disk, wasted my whole day yesterday, I was so disappointed. Then I saw you video, and thought no way can it be that Easy. Today I went my local hardware store and picked up a couple of washers and was praying for results. 20mins later,,,,,,,, I'm A happy chappie, changed one and got movement no noise at first then it done it again so I added washer to the other side and hey presto a working pana roof, just ordered merc lubricant and oil to complete the job. Massive Thank You. You A legend.
Fantastic. I was nervous about this but dove into it on my 2005 e320 pano roof. I used 2 M 8 size spring washers on the one screw and it did it. Second screw on the left looked difficult to take out and I then forgot to try. Bought a little MB grease for the rails and all is smooth. Thanks a bunch for the great video.
WOW Can't be more pleased with the instructions to make this repair on my '06-W211 Pano. In my case I used (2) flat washers stacked and a 1/4" dia. o-ring. Not possible to get to the other T25, to much obstruction. Tightened up the other smaller Torx scews.Tested before reassembly and no chatter. Getting the mirror back was tricky. I put a little grease on the socket area & spring ends, worked the spring with a pair of channel locks then had to fix the mirror in place before resetting the control panel. Got the mirror spring & socket in place then pushed with a flathead screw driver to over come the spring tension and it popped/locked in place. Then went the control panel. After all back together "re-programmed the sunroof" and all working normally. MB dealer would have charged a ton of money to do this, SPECIAL NOTE: Be extra careful with ribbon wires while control panel is hanging. THANKS ID Parts!!!
David S Reilly dude can you show me what you use? Like my english is not very good. All i can understand that you use washers on one side that is easy to remove the bolt. What kind of washers do you use and what kind of o-ring you youse? I wouod like to see it visualy and fix my panoramic also.
Cory, I knocked the spring in the mirror out trying to reinstall after putting in the washer. How can I get the spring back into the mirror? Am I now going to have to replace the mirror???
Small advise, you will be having problems putting back the mirror. It’s a pain in the ass. Put back the mirror first and then the whole pannel, then you will have more space and will be able to see everything.
I tried putting mirror first but it was incredibly hard getting the panel on afterwards. So I ended up putting the panel removed the sos button so I could push the mirror back into place and then put the sos back. I found it easier that way.
Man U have gained a subscriber and customer. My 05 e500 did this grinding popping off track thing tonight. I googled “panorama sunroof Mercedes broke” and it took me straight to the video which was the exact same model as my car and the exact same issue. Followed it step by step and works perfect now. Only thing I would add to the video is to mention on the re-install to put the mirror back first because it was a pain for a few minutes to get back in. Thanks for the video and for making it semi professional instead of some kid using his iPhone shaking everywhere and talking for an hour before he got to the main part
I’m so glad I saw this video. The dealership wanted to charge me $3,300 for problem. They told me I needed a new motor and tracks. Followed the steps in this and fixed it for about 12 cents.
This video is a lifesaver I will be contacting the dealerr tomorrow and I will be giving him a heads up I know this is the issue because when I put pressure on the panel I got it to close it made the grinding noise and it went slow but it did close I did not reopen it I knew the motor was good but I had a feeling it had something to do with pressure or something being loose because when I would press my hand on the panel hard it would close thanks a lot this was a perfect video
For those asking where the washer are sold, I got a set of washers that comes with different diameters and thickness. You'll be able to find one that fits more than likely.
Had the same problem 3 times changed the motor even the rail $6000 wasted money . Recently had the same problem then took the car to repair the motor out side the company repaired it with $100 and works excellent so it’s the motor this video is excellent no issue again smart professional video . My recommendation don’t waste money with dealer any more . The panoramic sun roof always can be repaired.
Problems began with grinding noise. Was able to close roof but passenger side wont completely. I replaced the grommet which eliminated the grinding noise and shade screen now opens and closes smoothly. However, attempting to open roof, driver side lifts but stops. I noticed the motor moves and the mall piece rotates. Video he mentions changing grommets on two bolts but on,y showed one. Will I have to remove panel to reach second bolt?
Hey so I tried this, it got the sunroof working a lot better, no grinding, and it actually closes but still wont open. I think my sunroof may be off track or something jammed?
Does this go for the 2003 Mercedes e 500 sport the one with the panoramic sunroof? Mine is recently having issues stuck open and grinding when try to close
THx for the great video... my roof on my '04 kompressor coupe got stuck open and grinding ... the washer solved the problem.. only issue is sunshade will not close .. is it a programming issue?
How does water leak in the sunroof control area?? I have a g500 and some water dropped onto my transmission shifter after raining.... Are there certain problem areas with the sunroof? Thanks.
Thanks for the video, I am going to give that a try. Before I start however may I confirm with you how many bolts did you remove and how many washers were installed please? Thanks again!
It is SO FRUSTRATING that people post videos like this and never return to answer questions. You asked this question8 MONTHS AGO. And, he hasn't returned to answer you yet. UNPROFESSIONAL!
Tried the procedure that's on your video it worked for awhile and it went back to making that grinding noise again. Do you have to put the washers on both of the screws or jus the one that's bad
Can't wait to attempt. Been search for over 3 years and I haven't found anything this helpful but again hopefully it works for me as I haven't tried. My issue started when it was able to close. Used the tool to close manually but never worked again and motor made the exact same noise. I have pressed the motor button many times out of frustration. Did I damage the gears?
The only thing is when going back to open it opens smoothly but when closing at some parts struggles. Could this be due to it needing grease and it being locked for quite some time? Or could it be signs of a bad motor?
Hey Jordan congraz! May I ask how many bolts did you remove and how many washers you installed please? it'd be absolutely amazing if could also let me know the size of the washer too, thanks a bunch man!
mehhhhhhhmehhhhhhmeh it stopped working but I think it's because the gears might be done for. Which isn't terrible because I may be able to replace the motor.however initially I took two of the mounting screws off one by one and add three 1/4 washers along with a lock washer on each bolt. You should notice the ones you will have to replace because of the damaged rubber washer
i have duel panaramic roof for 08 e350 the front on works but the rear does not is there anything else i can do or is this also it is starting to sag how do i fix that
Hi, my dad has a 1998 Mercedes E320 (W210 base model/4-door sedan). The sunroof won't slide back and makes a clicking noise if someone tries. The sunroof opens and closes up or down, but will not slide back...can you help? Thanks.
Thank you for info, I did close my roof, but other side of motor can't fix it, please tell me what to do, also mirror can not put it back, show me trick to do this two things.

UPDATE : I did this procedure last year on only 1 screw, taking the short cut. My bad , I now had to go back in and do the awkward second screw using 2 # 8 mm flat washers. All is well again. Advice is do BOTH SCREWS while you have the panel removed.
Yeah he doesn't do that in this video. The second bolt is the one that is the real challenge. Did you have to drop the headliner to reach the second bolt?
