The Mercedes/Erebus E63 AMG V8 Supercar was an exciting prospect with a strong future in the V8 Supercars going against the Holden Commodore, Ford Falcon, Nissan Altima, and Volvo S60, but things just didn't work out for Mercedes.

I always saw the V8 Supercars as the perfect example of Australian Manufacturers chickening out and banning the competition, rather than taking them on. It's very creation was a response to the R32's domination in Group A. "Should we make a car that can beat the GTR? Nah, let's just make it illegal instead." And in the end of the day, V8 Supercars suffered the same fate of the Ozzy car industry. How fitting.

ah yes and the old 'You dont want to buy these cars any more so we wont make them.... see? youre not buying the cars we are not making but you are buying the cars that we do make, so you clearly dont want the cars that you used to which we dont make any more, so we wont make them any more, more, so you buy what we do make, and oh look! now everyone in australia wants EVs and SUVs! No one likes V8s any more because we dont make them because you dont want them because we dont sell them therefo.....' yeah tl;dr circular logic and gaslighting. Commodores, Falcons, Camry's were *never* not the most popular car, until manufacturers and government colluded to tell us we dont want them any more, and forced the sales losses to 'prove' the point, then GM shut down holden, and both ford and toyota laughed and left. Now we are flooded with electric Chinese electric shit that spontaneously combusts when you fart on it. And chinese built major construction projects with illegal chinese cladding that... spontaneously combusts when you fart on it And thats totally not some crazy conspiracy. At all. Because Vic state government totally never colludes with them to undermine federal and state law.... where most of the cars and petrol products were made.

TBH they lasted 20 years, thats pretty damned good for a racing series. As someone who grew up watching it, it was worth it, and I agree it would have been fitting if they closed up the series in 2017. But that's not how racing series work, and having an openly biased series once it was clear it needed to open up in 2013 was very stupid.

its not the supercars that is stopping other manufactures from competing in the races series, its other manufactures who think putting money into developing a race car in a small market isn't viable. its why the Mercedes team wasn't a manufactures team but a private run team. all major manufactures have all said it not cost effective to make a race car on a small market like the supercars series, if the series had broken into the American and Asian markets like they tried then we have different manufactures in the series but the local people were not interested in it enough for it to viable option for supercars to keep going to these places.

It’s common to have rpm, compression, power, displacement, and induction limits. It’s also common that those limits add up to incentivizing a certain type of engine. In this case, it favored the engines of Holden & Ford at a design level. Mercedes could have made a bespoke engine optimized to the V8 rule set, which likely would have been power competitive, but it would likely make very little sense. It’s not like they’d put that engine in anything they sell other than like, 6 V8 supercars to their factory team and maybe 2 more to a privateer. That said, the explicit “Engine built outside X borders can’t have more than Y horsepower” is less common, but where it’s common, it’s almost always some sort of explicitly domestic racing series. Usually, though, it’s achieved less explicitly. For example, a hypothetical Japan-domestic-exclusive series in the 2000’s could have set a rule saying “2.0 - 2.8L turbos are allowed up to 1,000hp. Supercharged engines of any displacement are restricted to 750hp. All other engine formats are restricted to 650.” Sure, it doesn’t explicitly say most Hyundai and Chevrolet engines are banned, but… they’d all be pretty heavily penalized, while all of Japan’s well established at the time rally manufacturers would have held a big advantage.
@The_Evil_Monkey_93
@The_Evil_Monkey_93 Месяц назад
you're understanding incorrectly, category wide there was 'accumulated engine performance' or something where each engine was measured at defined points through the rpm range to ensure it was inside the regulations. that's iirc, it was supposed to keep the engines within a few percent of each other.

Motorsport has a very interesting history of begrudgingly letting people into it's little club, only to treat them like second class ciitzens. There's a reason Ilmor is able to put "The Ilmor ARCA engine reigns undefeated against the competition." up on their website. You are absolutely able to go somewhere else for your engine, but they will not make it easy for you to compete.

It's a real pity that Erebus/Mercedes, Nissan, and Volvo weren't able to compete on a level playing field. I mean, I get it, those three manufacturers had the capability to run much higher tech than Holden and the local Ford products so they had to make it fair, but the rules were so skewed in favour of the local brands it was essentially impossible for them to compete. The Volvo was in the mix for a short while, but that was more due to exceptional ability of the driver (Scott McLaughlin) than the car really. Both Mercedes and Nissan had some gun drivers (Maro Engel, Will Davison, Rick Kelly, Tim Slade, Lee Holdsworth, among others) but they never got near the front most of the time. It ultimately led to the withdrawal of all three, so in the end no one gained except those that were already winning. I believe WAU (Ryan Walkinshaw particularly) tried pretty hard to get another manufacturer interested with the introduction of Gen3 but sadly it came to nothing. Apparently he talked to a few people but couldn't get anything off the ground, probably for the same reasons Mercedes originally had reservations I'd guess, and from seeing what happened to those who had previously failed to compete successfully.

Everyone thought it was the car, then Erebus replaced him with Will Davo who achieved multiple top ten finishes in the exact same car. Some drivers just adapt I guess. Engel didn't endear himself to Australian and Kiwi motorsport fans when he threw SVG under the bus at the 12 Hour that time either. Not very sporting. The situation with Volvo was weird. The Erebus E63 5.0l had Drive by Wire and two Butterfly valve intakes instead of the 8 throttle bodies since it was a direct lift from the GT3 program. Those proved to be highly unreliable in its installation alongside the electric power steering. Also, the engines had to be flown back to Germany for servicing, but Erebus slowly shifted to a traditional 8 stack ITB, ditched the drive by wire and electric power steering and Ross Stone insisted on servicing the engines at the shop for faster turn around. So they had a lot of things going against them from the start.

I feel like the higher-ups in Supercars wanted to have their cake and eat it when it came to new manufacturers and it backfired. Like sure, they welcomed new OEMs but still wanted Ford and Holden to be the centre of the show and it therefore didn't feel like Nissan, Volvo and Erebus/Mercedes were competing on equal terms, so it's not surprising they all left in relatively short order. As an aside, Ford in the COTF era feel like underdogs to some extent against Holden, with only six cars on the grid for most of it from FPR, their various satellites and DJR. At the same time, all three manufacturers only had one team representing them, and none of them had top teams. Erebus was essentially being rebuilt from the ground up from the old Stone Brothers squad while Kelly Racing (Nissan) and Garry Rogers Motorsport (Volvo) had winning pedigree but at this point in time tended to be in the midfield. Imagine how things might've gone if one of them had partnered with someone like Triple Eight for instance.

As someone outside of Australia, it's weird to hear the Supercars series having such a reputation locally. Maybe the standards in the states are just that low, but the moment you can put the dirt tires away, make right turns, AND drive with windshield wipers on without being told when you need to put on different tires has always put a series squarely in the territory of proper touring car racing. That's sophisticated stuff. For as much as the deck was stacked against them though, seeing those AMGs steal a win in every season they competed really must be cathartic for someone who signed off on that project.

I always thought that the Merc would've been far more competitive if Erebus had of designed the engine to the ruleset in the first place rather than trying to come in with things like throttle by wire and 2 throttle butterflies rather than the specified 8 etc etc. It had all these waivers and as a result they ended up undoing most of them anyway and to a degree they were hampered by Supercars imposing a bore x stroke ratio on them that wasn't particularly favourable to a DOHC engine

I liked the rawness of V8 Supercars because they had less grip, more weight, long braking distances and overall way more challenging to drive. It was thrilling to see drivers controlling them as they were drifting out of corners and it felt really felt like old school racing when there was low mechanical grip and more dependent on technique. You can't find this type of driving in almost any modern popular racing series. I feel they should have let other manufactures compete without so much unfaireness in the ruleset, that would have brought innovation through compatition. Japan did a better job with JGTC and Super GT in this regard in my humble opinion.

More like what they did was hella dumb. The E63 was big, heavy and worse still, there IS a smaller car in Mercedes's lineup that's smaller than the E-class and that's the C63. It has the same engine, technically same build and the same gearbox thus it would be easy to use the smaller yet similar car. That's where Volvo was smart. They too have the S60 which was a medium-sized sedan like the C-class and it's waaay smaller than the Australian "Commie" and the Falcons. That made it nimbler to drive which helps alot on more technical tracks. Also, Mercedes-Benz Pacific or whatever the HQ was that the Aussies had had the lamest reasoning on why they didn't wanna participate in the sport by calling it "degrading" and "bogan" when... AMG started as a "bogan" company doing silly stuff to Merc to race in "bogan" events and they still do till now in certain events. Look at AMG's history. What they did was soo unassuming that they took a huge ass 300SEL out of everyone's thought and smacked it right into the 24 Hours of Spa which was just being mocked by everyone for being stupid and silly that how would these bunch of garage tuners had such sheer audacity to take a yacht to battle against proper built sportscars? Yes the SEL didn't win of course but it built a reputation that even garage tuners like them can make a boat fly down the track and give chase to actual properly built race cars and the rest was history for AMG. Heck they even became an official partner for DTM at one point which was the German equivalent of "bogan motorsport" as the ATTC/V8 Supercars so I have zero clue what the hell was Mercedes Australia complaining about when AMG itself was made by 2 bogans, taking a car and then dumping stupid parts on it to go racing, shocking everyone and even competing in their variant of a "bogan motorsport" so what's the big idea about them racing in V8 Supercar with actual factory team support even?
@nanobyte5567
@nanobyte5567 Месяц назад
I think the bogan culture isn’t the only reason why they weren’t happy. What may have been the case is since Erebus was already racing with Merc in GT3, they thought they could be an offical factory backed team in Supercars because they just so happen to be a Merc customer. There may have already been observations from Merc Australia that the Erebus management (Betty and Barry) weren’t the best professionally, which is very much relevant to this day with how Barry gets cranky and leaves a race because of how things go. Idk, but there had to be something about either Erebus or Supercars management which Merc Australia didn’t like but didn’t want to say publicly for probably legal reasons. But no doubt the bogan culture is the biggest factor and I can’t blame them

Honestly when i first saw the Mercedes V8 supercar it intrigued me being visually distinct from the other cars mind you this was in 2018 a few years after they left the sport in a league i did run a holden for their one off Supercars championship i didn't place that well because i was still an amateur compared to other drivers who would lap entire seconds faster makes me wonder though what if i drove the Mercedes instead

Particularly short sighted view bro. Australia's 2 biggest car manufacturers and their many supply chain partners employed hundreds of thousands of Australian workers. Back in day when our locally built large sedans were fighting it out to be the number 1 selling vehicle on Australian roads things were great, job security wasn't a problem and the Corporate big wigs and Australian Government did everything in their power to keep it that way. Its more than who makes the better car, businesses fiercely protect their interests and the government supposedly protects workers. V8 supercars is a business, a brand so naturally those at the top came up with unfair biased unsportsmanlike regulations that were clearly anti foreign brands to protect and help future proof their cashcow profit margins whilst pretending it was to protect local industry and their workers , so it little to do with the average Australians Ego as you put it and everything to do with big corporate interests protecting their shareholders and bottom dollar. They did everything to deflect accountability onto everyone else including their own loyal fanbase and Australian government. Its complicated bro.

GM and Ford had a 20 year head start in development, building 620 hp V8s, rev limited to 7500rpm. Supercars should afforded the DOHC more revs and less displacement They would no doubt have been able to make the required power and consumption. Supercars have pretty much done that with a 5.7 GM LS and a 5.4 Ford modular.

@@FailedRacers All the cars had carryover steel Project Blueprint panels to start with. Only the composite front quarter panels had been allowed in 2007 (before that teams used to roll the steel quarter panels), however the shortened rear doors of the FG and VE were both OEM steel items that have been physically cut shorter and rewelded. Back then (Project Blueprint/early COTF) the rules were that the steel inner side panel pressing and steel support structures for the front and rear lights had to be used. After all, Project Blueprint had evolved from a full production bodyshell of the VY/BA (consistent with the earlier VP/EB and VT/AU) to a replacement sheet metal floorpan to allow the VE and FG to be shortened to match the older cars, but all the rest was still meant to be OEM. It was only the ZB Commodore that introduced a lot of composite replacement panels & structure, and the Mustang which used even more. 🙂

However, that's not to say that the Holdens and Fords had less than 654hp at the end of 2014. The teams were developing their engines to increase horsepower, and Holden and Ford didn't have to follow the same rules as Volvo, Nissan, and Mercedes. www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/motor-sport/v8-supercars/v8-supercars-teams-spend-56-million-on-engine-war-to-break-300kmh-speed-barrier-at-bathurst/news-story/ec3453cd45e090e51d233dd1a17ae21f?nk=a2ec7940f49b03799d3c67c66746e1fa-1721046167
