I did mine without the resonator - you don't want to do that - ultra drone, although I've probably got a lot more noise coming down the pipe as I changed it to 3" with high-flow cats. The 32 valves likely pumps out more noise than my other less sophisticated engines that I wasn't getting "loud" from.
@@that90sbenz and PC: I'd like to stick the old original resonator back on, but with all the pipe diameter changes I'll likely try an aftermarket one. Flowmaster Series 40 at the end. I've decided I don't like "ULTRA LOUD" on this car, so hopefully the resonator'll tame it, and I don't have to change the Flowmaster too.
@@petescarport also located in Florida. Picked up this one for a steal in Ft. Myers. shoot me a text in case we can colab need parts or find solutions 9 five 4 5 six 0 2279
I need to find a way to post a video and connect it so i can display my build for the haters bothered by u adding AMG badge SMFH never fails for haters to be on videos for shit they dont even like and make efforts to comment toward it..keep doing what u doing nice R129👍
Engine and transmission are super solid. Mine runs like new. Issues are going to be with the hydraulic top failing, but I use mine manually. Also normal wear items like suspension bushings, drive shaft bushings and bearings will start to go over years and with about 100k miles or more.
Oh and don't let any mechanic tell you they are hard to work on or parts are really expensive. Parts are similar price to any car and they are very easy to work on
That actually sounds insane. Kind of goes against everything I've been told but would love to hear what that sounds like. Do you have a link to a video where somebody did this, thank you
@@petescarport "w124 m119 straight pipes" they are Mexican in a shop with Mexican music lol. It's a w124 coupe with our engine. All it goes against is sound, performance is much better because of weight loss and a more free flow, I don't have to confide to emission rules in Tennessee so you may not be able to alter your secondary cats and still pass. It's like, c63 loud, I wouldn't do it on a daily driver, even in rural areas, everyone thinks you want to race lmao
@@petescarport keep the primary cats of course, the secondary is where all the magic happens, mine is 3" as well. Consider a bigger air filter or box, the stock box is best when the whole car is stock, but 3 inch is a huge change so bigger filters actually help to avoid a bottle neck, the myth that any other filter but stock is bad on cars is wrong, all a unison between the sizing. You'll be very impressed with the results with what you said. I ditched my seats for lighter ones with harnesse, removed the softop, gutted trunk, and got lighter wheels with much wider tires. Performance wide the cheapest and best bang for the buck are custom throttle bodies. They spent billions on the research and development on our cars and know best so outside of aspiration, cams, ported heads not much else you can do before it becomes cheaper to swap the engine, get your stock throttle body ported and polished and you'll get a dyno proven 20 horsepower being conservative. Which his a huuuuuge difference for a $600 machining job. Next I will replace windows with plexy glass and install the quife limited slip differential (1500$) it's adjustable and will unlock the ability to rolling burnouts in 4th. I currently have a pedal commander plug in that removes the 1 second delay on Mercedes cars that make them so cushy. I want a spoiler but nit one that looks out of place and goofy, ithink the AMG ducktail one is probably the best design. Keep in mind my car has bad paint and 210,000 miles and was bought for a steal so this is how I justify the butchery to the original Mercedes design. If I could just get my hands on a v12...
How can I speak with you? I have a 1999 SL500 and would like to improve the exhaust note of the car without spending $1,000's. Of course I want it to sound like a full AMG exhaust, NOT JUST LOUD. I love the AMG sound and the sound of an Aston Martin. Do I need to replace the intake manifold? I need to be educated. I have looked at Kand N, Magna flow and others but the learning curve is just too steep. Thanks so much!
@@petescarport thanks for answer:-) mine is silence so need to find something with a good deep Sound and again not to loud in daily driving bit when pushing the pedal you can heat it’s a V8 maybe also a KN filter:👍
@@kenned1974 I would remove stock muffler and resonator and put in a magnaflow. This would give you deep tones on throttle and quit when normal driving.
So shocks are blown out. When I got the car the past owner stuck some spring lifts in them and I took them out. I love the way it looks but it rides very bad
Last owner put them on. I talked about it in video when I purchased. I'm afraid to take off for now because I took off the rear antenna he put on and under it was a massive chip in paint
W upgrades it can be made into 1.. do ur research in fact u can go beyond what amg built for the r129 chassis if you know what u doing w these cars..AMG wasn't hired in for 320s and 500s its the 55 the 60 and 73 they only built so many so if he's modding his he can put AMG on it u dont work for them do ya? Didnt think so lol
ALPHA DON ́007 I fully understand that. At the end of the day, it’s a non AMG car with AMG badges😂 regardless of what you do to it, it will never be an AMG variant. Unlike you I actually own one, “do your research” buddy.
@@will5436 In the UK you could order a new R230 from the dealer with an optional AMG pack, it had bigger alloys, different front and rear bumpers, tail pipes, I think also the ride height was a bit lower and the back boxes a bit more free flowing and it had an AMG badge on the back like an SL55, so in the UK you can get SL500 AMG.
@@GM-ii8gs so it’s basically the equivalent of the sport package that we have in the USA? I could be wrong but that also appears to be a non OEM AMG badge, notice the font, and badging to the left of the AMG.
Wow I can’t believe you noticed that. So ironically I had no clue it was in any video but I had the tires balanced that week and I was pumping gas and said damn they put my front on the rear and rear on the front. Good heads up on that one. I switched them most likely right after this video was done.
Nope being serious. I never went back to that tire kingdom again but didn’t want to waste my time going up there to wait 2hrs for them to rotate them properly so did it myself
SL's are dead quiet because the average age of the buyer new was 65 to 75, it's just reality, and no lie....Mercedes personality is STEALTH BOMBER, I don't think I am going to muffler delete my 550, has a great sound anyway, I want to keep it how Mercedes wanted it.
