This is a short video showing the repair and restoration of a heavily corroded chrome surround from a Mercedes 280 SL. If you own one of these cars or planning to buy one it is worth taking the time to look at the back of the grill as replacement and repairs can be very costly unless you do it yourself.

Really, really useful, I restored the grille 'just in time' to its former glory. Brilliant advice and quite frankly saved me as bloomin' fortune. Thanks Mike, your advice and step by step narrative gave me the confidence to try doing it myself. I learned loads and loved doing it, took me back to the days of my late teens working on my crumbling P6 Rover.

I had no idea cars in the UK rust so badly until watching your SL videos. Don't see rust like this too much in the US unless far up north.

Well done. Another easy option is shrink rap with chrome finish instead of paint.

Hey Mike. Another great video. Here’s a question on the grill. I just took mine apart and found there is a body seal attached to the top of the grill. My seal is just fine and it is playable, but the glue or what ever that is has failed and the seal does not stay in place. My question is if you know the proper method to attach the seal? Is it a glue, grease or something else? It seams what they used is not a permanent glue.

Hi Tony - that 'sealing pad' part no. 1078880197 only appeared on cars between 1984 -89 and thus I have never fitted iot on any of my SL's. I could be completely wrong, but I wouldn't have thought that it would be glued on - if it was me, I'd probably use grease if anything at all. It may be that these seals are far more rubbery when new and don't require a fixing compound. Mike
