I was an owner operator of a small Towing business up until 2 years ago, I did this while being 100% disabled because I have through out my whole life enjoyed helping broken down and stranded motorists in need of help. Local Towing companies rarely answered calls after hours so I bought a used Ford Super duty, twin line wrecker, two wheel drive and started business again. I refused insurance company calls like Casey but did take Road service plans as they had to pay my rates as no one else would answer calls. W/O those companies I couldn't afford to stay in business with insurance costs. After like 10 years and COVID I quit as I was in too much pain, sadly. Now there are a couple new players who do answer calls/phones. I Wish I could have done a RU-vid channel back then and had people willing to help me help others. Too old now I guess. Great videos Casey, wish I could chat, work with you someday.

However my current insurance Co, sf, hasn't honored a tow yet and we've called 3xs for a tow on an insured vehicle . In fact I AM CALLING Monday and demanding all the money I've paid for road side assistance that is worthless. I'm going back to triple AAA.

Good on you! was zooming up the highway and spotted a broken down rv, towing a cool antique tractor flat tire on the roadside. Super friendly senior citizen had been waiting 5 hours for a tow truck. I had a bottle jack and he had a spare, with a little elbow grease and 30 mins we got the tire changed. He asked what my fee was, I asked if he had a pot of coffee on and he did, perfect, talked antiques for a bit and got warmed up. Saw him again at the antique tractor show the next day!

Did something similar, guy and son were towing their trailer to go see the NASCAR race at mid-Ohio, they were on the side of the highway and it was going to be dark in about an hour. Got his spare on and aired up about 30 minutes before sunset. He tried to offer me money for my help, I told him to buy an impact and a tire inflator so he could help himself or someone else in a similar situation in the future. Karma came my way about a year later when I had a blowout on my trailer and my wife had taken my jack out of the truck to help with an Eagle scout project and had forgotten to return it. A stranger with a jack and a sawzall was able to help me get the tire free from the axle and get the wheel off and get my spare on.

All Absolutely True. As a retired LEO, I discovered this early on in my career. People with AAA or other "Emergency Roadside Service" "Insurance" Always were made to wait HOURS & HOURS for a tow via their insurance. I always explained this to them then suggested taking a local company service & submitting for reimbursement via their Regular Auto Insurance. It always worked for them at a MUCH LOWER cost. Very Well Done Casey.

I hit a deer an hour out of a small town in Montana. Barely had cell phone but was able to get a 911 call out and a deputy from the town just happened to be in town (he covered the entire county!). AAA would have been 5 hours! He made a call into the local shop and they towed me into town and they haggled with the insurance company to get my truck to the nearest big town for the auction/scrap yard (it was totaled). The deputy and local shop was great, and I'm glad my insurance company was able to bend the rules a bit so I could get going the next day based on the shop's photos and repair estimate rather than waiting 4 days for their official insurance adjuster to look at it.

Casey, you are so correct. I used to have a towing company and the frustration of insurance CO’s, picking up derelict vehicles off the Hwy for the Hwy patrol and then the state making it impossible to get the permission to dispose of the vehicle and more, I sold my interest and left. Like you, I love helping people. I love the challenge dealing with very difficult situations, even when the weather was bad, but insurance CO’s will be the death of the service industry.

Several times I have been on the receiving end of "pay it forward" and was so thankful someone was there to help me. I am in the same camp with you on helping people out without charge. I have helped folks out of a jamb and they asked what they owed. I am a big supporter of animal rescues and food banks. When I say donate whatever they thought the assistance was worth to their local non-profit, they are more than happy to not have to find cash and often donate more than what the help would have cost for the going rate. All parties win. I feel good helping someone out. The people got back enjoying their day, and a non-profit receives money to do their needed work helping the community. Some folks call it making a deposit in the karma bank. I want to make sure I always have a positive balance, just in case I am ever in a place I am forced to make a withdrawal.
@KiwiCatherineJemma
@KiwiCatherineJemma Год назад
Also, when donating to local "non profits" , depending on various tax laws in whichever particular country one lives in, and whether the non-profit is suitably Registered as a Charity, the person donating might be entitled to some form of partial rebate, the next time they file their tax return. Here (NZ) folks are entitled to get 33% back on their tax, of the first $2,000 donated to charities per year. So if donating $65 to an Animal Rescue that is a Registered Charity say, then our ("IRD") Tax-department's gonna give you some $22 refund back at the end of the tax year. Your choice whether to donate that $22 refund back again to the animal shelter the following year (whereupon you'd get a $7 refund the year after). Be aware laws do vary from place to place and the USA is renowned for having one of the most complicated tax systems ever. Individual mileage may vary !

It is worth taking the time to read the small print in all legal documents. If a company doesn't live up to its commitments, next time around, get a new insurance company and only support companies that follow through on what they agree to do. Buyer beware. I completely agree with Casey's logic for not accepting payment from the insurance company. Thanks for posting this stuff Casey, it’s valuable information. Now you’re telling me I’m the hero for just being casually entertained watching something I find interesting. It’s heartwarming to see someone be so conscientious about others plight (stranded motorists as well as competing tow companies) that they make the decision to be the difference. Good on you, I hope you are rewarded tenfold for your service to others. 👍

Less than $500 charged to the customer in addition to what she had already been paying per month and more than the ridiculous $65 the Ins Co was offering Casey for the job. Remember what he said. The Ins Co was thought it was perfectly OK to just leave a PAYING customer stranded for 3 days while they dickered around to get the cheapest possible rate and then when each tow company rejected it they had the audacity to charge their customer $500 extra to try to save their precious profit! Casey says a polite "not cool " to that, but I'm sure we all could come up with a whole lot more colorful language. Boycott Roadside Assistance scams today! We have to make them loose profit before they will change these wicked practices!

Here in the UK we only pay a fixed charge even if its a hundred miles away thats all we pay! My cover for 12 mths is £65.00 !! That insurance is discusting and needs looking into $65.00 what a rip off!! Keep up the good work Casey. Thank heaven for You Tube!

This exact thing happened to me. I broke down 20 mi from a large Eastern Washington City. The insurance company, State Farm, that I had roadside assistance through, which was actually a contracted roadside assistance company, left me stranded for 24 hours on the side of a major freeway. The reason was because the roadside assistance company kept trying to lowball the towing companies. It took over 10 phone calls to the roadside assistance people and State farm to get me towed. State Farm could not have been worse in caring about my safety.
