In this video I discuss how my bearing clearances on a 3.0 Mercruiser rebuild were going to be too loose. Due to tolerance stacking and probably some rod caps that stretched by 0.001” I found my clearances to be 0.003” to 0.004”. That’s a problem because the maximum recommended clearance by Mercruiser in the factory manual was 0.0025”.
But it turns out that Mahle (Clevite) sells stock size bearings that are undersized by 0.001” and 0.002”. These undersized bearings closed up the clearances and I am now within spec. This saved me at least two weeks of delay on this build if not more.
So thanks for some quick thinking Mahle engineers for coming up with this product. It has really saved the day on this project.
Also, this video is a prime example of why you should double check your clearances and not rely on the machine shop to determine your clearances.
