In this video I discuss how my bearing clearances on a 3.0 Mercruiser rebuild were going to be too loose. Due to tolerance stacking and probably some rod caps that stretched by 0.001” I found my clearances to be 0.003” to 0.004”. That’s a problem because the maximum recommended clearance by Mercruiser in the factory manual was 0.0025”.
But it turns out that Mahle (Clevite) sells stock size bearings that are undersized by 0.001” and 0.002”. These undersized bearings closed up the clearances and I am now within spec. This saved me at least two weeks of delay on this build if not more.
So thanks for some quick thinking Mahle engineers for coming up with this product. It has really saved the day on this project.
Also, this video is a prime example of why you should double check your clearances and not rely on the machine shop to determine your clearances.

years ago the most common bearings come in - and + .001 .002. and .003. i've honed rods and used the + (larger shell od to get the proper fit. just double check concentricity so the crush is even. its a very fine touch on the hone machine

For a shop trying to stay on schedule it’s a fine line between custom fitting something that doesn’t quite work and just throwing parts away and buying new. Had these bearings not worked I would have thrown the rods away and bought new however since I had already mounted the pistons in these rods, I had to try and save them.

couldn't you have had the rods resized back to factory specs.

The bearings were $3 a pair. Resizing rod costs $15 per rod. And I was in a hurry. Also resizing rods shortens them ever so slightly. But thanks for the suggestion and being a part of my channel.
