At 7:04 you say that the original procedure for the ‘older style’ slip fit bearing is to torque to 80 foot pounds. Does that mean that you do not need to measure/set the ‘rolling torque’ on when using a slip fit style bearing because you automatically torque the nut with collapsible washer to 80 foot pounds? Does it mean that it’s only the new style bearing that requires the rolling torque? I watched your previous video showing assembly/rolling torque on the alpha one/gen 1 (that applies to gen 2 as well, which I have). Thanks for a great video.
Thanks for watching, 80ft lbs is for our specific serial number. If you have an Alpha one Gen 1, it’s very likely that yours is the same however we recommend getting a for-sure confirmation from your serial number service manual. Once transitioning to the new design, rolling torque is mandatory. Keep us posted on your project. We really appreciate you reaching out to us and sharing this. Michael, just got my boat and it needs a bit of work. Your videos are great, the detail on the important items is great!! (excuse the typing, i smashed a finger). When i pulled my whole alpha 1 gen 2 drive off, i noticed i can barely turn the shaft by hand. It was replaced with a used unit last year with the previous owner. Should i be concerned? Where do i start troubleshooting? Noted, the boat has sat in my garage for the past year. Would lack of gear lube cause my issue? When i put it in neutral i can spin the prop shaft freely.
Thanks for watching, we really appreciate that. First thing to check is whether or not the currently installed bearing is the old style or new. If it’s the old style, it should have been properly torqued to between 80-90ft lbs…depending on the serial number/model. If it has the newer style Press-Fit as shown in this video…it will be torqued via rolling resistance and will still be pretty tough to “begin to” rotate however once you have it moving…it should rotate very nicely. You can maybe ask previous owner if they know which one is installed or where the boat was last serviced…maybe you can contact shop that can hopefully provide that info if they have the work order still in there database.
@@DIYwithMichaelBorders Whats the quickest way to tell which one i have? Can i tell by just removing the top cover? Will i be able to see the gear nut/no gear nut from there?
@@JeffJackson86 Thanks for the reply, will you be replacing your u-joint assembly gear and upper unit vertical gear? If you don’t replace gears, the drive should already be shimmed for the current gears. Replacing internal oil seals won’t require the entire drive to be re-shimmed. 😎👍
@@DIYwithMichaelBorders Well i think i got my answer, I took my drive to the dealer today and it looks like i have a Alpha 1 Gen 1 drive and there is only one bearing available for my drive. I thought i had a gen 2 drive. That clears things up! Thanks.
Hi! Thanks for the great videos. Question for you - I have the Alpha One Gen II with the stepped bearing configuration and want to just replace the seal. I got a new nut and washer, but need to know if I need to do the rolling torque or just torque it to the 80/90 ft lbs? The drive is a "OL650247". Any help you can provide is much appreciated. Thanks!
Thanks for watching, we appreciate that. If you are staying with the standard bearing set as opposed to converting to the new Press-fit…then you will not be required to perform rolling resistance procedure. 😎👍🧰
I ended up letting the marine service center do it. They had it done in just a few hours and I feel more confident that it is done right. @@DIYwithMichaelBorders
@@johnwagner9192 Thanks for the follow up. Peace of mind, less worry, and better confidence is very valuable. Sets you up for a more enjoyable weekend. 😎👍
Hey Tony, thanks for watching. Great question and the bearing/gear set will need to be taken apart. We recommend contacting a few marinas and having a shop quickly pull unit apart so you can do procedure again…or they may be willing to set rolling resistance for you for $50.00 or so…👍…keep us posted.
