Mercury 1.0L class Overheating/Guardian mode fix

Welcome back, lets get right into it,
These modern 4 stroke 40/50/60 HP #mercury engines have a huge design flaw which is not widely acknowledged or talked about. They lack inlet screen filters. This allows for a mass intake of weeds, mats, wood, and just any other fine debris and garbage that is floating at the surface of the water which can get stuck inside your cooling passages. This lowers your water pressure to the powerhead and triggers #guardian mode during higher RPM's due to a pending overheat condition which ultimately shuts you down to idle. The issue left uncorrected for too long can result in a blown head gasket at the powerhead, or worse.
This video strays away from the speed tests and fun on the water and is meant to provide some insight and a cheap DIY home fix to the issue to get your cooling passages clear and get your outboard up and running again without having to drop your boat to a dealer for warranty and waiting FOREVER for service or paying massive amounts of money to fix the issue outside of warranty. It's proactive boat ownership which is equally as important as the fun you like to have out on the water.
Feel free to ask any questions you deem fit for the topic. I monitor and answer all questions and comments posted as honestly and truthfully as I can so please ask away if something was not covered in this video.
Lets get you out there!
If you enjoyed the content, I would very much appreciate your subscribe and thumbs up, as it motivates me to keep on producing more videos for ya'll. There are plenty more I intend to make to educate and inform you on your boat and outboard so you can improve yours if and when you get the itch to mod.

Good Information, Thanks!!! I wish I would have saw this before I started on mine. I just got the boat recently and it started throwing an alarm. There was obvious signs it was overheating and going into limp mode. I dropped the lower thinking the impeller failed but the impeller was good. What I found was the thermostat and housing was clear full of sand. Had I known what was going on I wouldn't have hesitated to pull it apart on the lake as it was a very long trek back to the dock with the 5 hp kicker. Cheers Don

It's not a design flaw. If it had screens it would stop up quicker and cause impeller damage. If you look at other Merc's and brands you will see many of them don't have screens either.
@extremeboating7347
@extremeboating7347 2 месяца назад
I have looked at other Mercury engines and they have some sort of screening there to keep from sucking up excessive weeds and such. I guess if you look at it from one point of view or another either one is an issue, with or without screening.

You mentioned that you can’t do an on water fix. When my 2005 50 hp ELPT stops pissing I use a hand-operated Guzzler pump to reverse flush and I’m pissin’ again. Moreover I use a quick connect to make the connection without having to turn the male end of the hose to thread it into the motor.
@extremeboating7347
@extremeboating7347 2 года назад
That's actually good info but the real fix if you get too much of it in there is to remove the thermostat and flush it out with a garden hose like you saw towards the end of the video and there is no way to do that on the water if you ingest too much junk through the inlets.

Ran my Bass Tracker 50 into a sandbar and immediately had overheat issues (no physical damage)... 40 hours total on the motor & it went over 210 degrees per VesselView app..... RPM limited to 2000... I will try all suggestions in this vid... What about remove thermostat cover and thermostat and connect hose muff to lower unit and run engine for a minute or so on open thermostat??? Does this 50hp have a poppet valve i should replace??? Many thanks for posting this vid!!!!
@extremeboating7347
@extremeboating7347 8 месяцев назад
If you ran into a sandbar so much to the point where you are overheating the sand went all over the cooling system. Remove the stat and run it every possible way you can. I wouldn't try running the outboard without a thermostat unless the system is all closed up. The 2000 RPM issue is a guardian enabled running condition to decrease the possibility of blowing your head gasket. As for the poppet valve that is integrated into the thermostat. If there is any doubt the thermostat is no longer functioning correctly then I would replace it. You may need to flush out your system several times to be honest but I would first start with the muffs hooked up and run that for a few minutes, then hose threaded into the back to begin the backflush, and finally with the full thermostat out and gunk it has stuck to it cleared out.

Good video, thanks for your help. I have a problem but when I have the motor in low. It sound a long beep. I check the pee hole water and it too hot (burning), so I understand that can be a problem. Impeller is changed every year, and I can see that maybe the problem is in the thermostat. I'm going to try to clean it! do you think that's the reason? (I talk about salt water!!)
@extremeboating7347
@extremeboating7347 Год назад
If the pee hole is too hot the thermostat is most likely not opening. I would try to change it and/ or if you don't want to try that first I would put it in boiling water to see if it opens up. If you do replace it, and it continues then you have a problem with the powerhead/ head gasket guaranteed.

I got a 2023 Seapro 200hp brand new last week. I followed the manual for the break in period and around 17 hours I was cruising across clear ocean back to port and got the guardian mode…I eventually went down to 1000 rpm and had to putt back to port. I had checked the lower for obstructions as it was saying it was over heating, didn’t find any. I dropped it off at the dealer and they said they have no idea right now what caused it. Any experience with that? I confirmed I didn’t hit anything, go through a scum line in the water, or anything but regular operation.

Have them perform a cylinder leakage test across the cylinders. It almost sounds like you have a blown power head gasket.

Great video! My 2010 mercury 75hp 4 stroke is at the shop for an alarm I’m getting but only at 1000 RPM. (long beep). The motor is peeing steadily with a nice cold to lukewarm stream. No power loss and the motor runs smoothly. The shop scanned revealed no fault code. The shop wants to continue investigating and charging me like crazy. I don’t know what to do anymore. Can you help me please 🙏. Cheers!

What kind of water pressure are you getting at idle and what happens when you try to give it any sort of throttle? A stream is never an indicator of correct water pressure. I have never seen a long beep before so this is going to require some patience and maybe even some testing on your part if we are going to try to solve this together. I have a 115HP now which is on the same engine block as a 75 so this is a good one for the both of us.
@michellefebvre3348
@michellefebvre3348 2 месяца назад
@@extremeboating7347 I don’t know the water pressure since I don’t have a gauge or any tool to measure it. If I can have my boat back from the dealer. I’m thinking of buying the Mercury Vessel View monitor. When I first heard the beep I put the throttle to neutral and it stopped. After 2-3 minutes, I came back home with medium to almost WOT without any alarm. After 10 minutes, I slowed down at 1000 rpm and the alarm went off again. If it wasn’t from that alarm I would say that the engine runs great.
@extremeboating7347
@extremeboating7347 2 месяца назад
That's weird. I know that vesselview records long term stuff and stores it so it is really useful. I almost wonder if you are having some sort of throttle body synchronization issue. Just know that water pressure is not recorded to vesselview unless you have a digital water pressure sensor installed so you'll either need to install a manual one or a digital one prior to getting that info.

@@extremeboating7347 thanks for your input. The dealer talked about a lift pump issue of some sort. I asked them to stop investigating for the weekend in order to stop the bill from running. I might go get my boat back before getting ruined. Thanks again and I’ll keep you posted.
@extremeboating7347
@extremeboating7347 2 месяца назад
@michellefebvre3348 it may very well be a fuel issue. Mercury in general is known to use cheap fuel pumps so it may be worth hooking up a fuel pressure gauge to it to take a look at idle pressures. You will need muffs or some sort of way of running the outboard while the gauge is hooked up to it.

If you do that every single time you get junk in there (which would be quite frequently if you are in a lake or reservoir) you will be spending a ton of money on something that is not needed in the first place. A simple clean out and proper reverse flush through the thermostat hole is sufficient.

That sounds pretty much like a staple feature of guardian. The best way to reset guardian is to put the throttle handle into neutral, wait a few seconds and then you can resume running at regular speeds. Just don't bring it back up to wide open throttle because like my video, it will put you back into guardian due to debris blockages in the cooling system. If the issue persists, then it is not an overheating issue and you have other issues in play which will require you diagnose it or take it in to get the code read. You have an older model, however, so locations may be different as far as the thermostat goes. You also wouldn't have the hose inlet on it, but regardless, after you get that t- stat off you can definitely reverse flush your outboard.
