I bought this same motor in 2010 (new) and for the next 5 years the first start of the season was hell. I discovered your video 4 years ago and to my shock it worked perfectly. Each year I use this trick at the beginning of the season and I can't thank you enough for this info. I am 65 so my arm, shoulder, back and neck thank you also.

Thank you for this video! Yesterday I tried this method of starting our new Mercury 7 hp outboard on our sailboat which I have never been able to do before. It worked leaving the marina and coming back in. I'm grateful because it's the difference between me being able to sail by myself and not.

Thank you! This has been a huge help. Now takes 1 or 2 pulls instead of 7 or 8. One thing.. you don't have to remove the emergency cut off for this to work.

Mate you’re a bloody marvel. Works brill. Just about ready to throw this dumb motor in the drink until you gave this hint. Thanks.

love the puzzles these motors can be. Just figured out a proper starting procedure for my 1995 115hp merc 2-stroke

Yeah - It's funny, a friend of mine actually said that he thinks that each of these older motors have personalities and quirks of their own!

Hey I kind of figured this out on my own, great motor. I have a 2012 but I don't seem to have to pull the killswitch. Just pull the choke one pull then push it back in and she starts right away. Good video!

I have the exact same brand new motor and have been having trouble starting it. I'll try your starting method next week. Looking forward to not tearing my shoulder ligaments off every time I start it.

Mate - Let me know if it works for you! Discovering this little hack saved my shoulder. Sold this engine earlier in the year, but would be curious to hear if it works.

@timothystella895
@timothystella895 5 лет назад
it works beacuse it means that when you pull it without spark it pump fuel into the cylinder, so then when you pull it with spark theres more fuel to ignite

What if the electronics are hooked up to boat? Should I still open choke and pull the cord before turning key?

I don’t know how with rest of owners but I noticed every time trying to start with choke out the engine is getting flooded with fuel and after removing spark plug they are wet. So i try always to start only with handle on starting point and without choke. For me works better. But i will try your method as well
@MattKellyFishing

you can try it ,

@@MattKellyFishing found a guide table for starting this motor in the manual for the engine. There are three conditions and below 15*C it is choke out and pull starter untill combustion occurs. Of course with grip on starting position. Than close choke after first combustion and continue starting with grip on start position. This manual works good now only we replaced spark plugs and cleaned the carb plus new fuel. This is a rescue boat on a ship so it is little bit tricky every person does something stupid and than we must struggle. For example they were raising idle rpm not on the carburator but on the advance limiter on the left side of outboard… but now its all back to stock :)

This motor is actually a Tohatsu 30 hp motor, the carb gasket in restrictive, change it.

Do it without the lanyard removal. Works for me
@MattKellyFishing
@MattKellyFishing 6 лет назад
Yep - That works in most cases. In this case, it didn't work for this outboard. Hence the experimentation. If it did work, there wouldn't be a need for this video.
@jmdds
@jmdds 5 лет назад
Exactly.The lanyard removal has nothing to do with it but the choke on the fist pull did it.
@thedolphin5428
@thedolphin5428 4 года назад
@@jmdds Not necessarily. Choke adds more petrol and less air. No lanyard equals no spark. So therefore the LACK OF SPARK (without lanyard) does not waste the first few choked pulls with misfires. So, this guy's system IS A DIFFERENT METHODOLOGY to your suggestion, and his is therefore 100% what works for him. Although, by the sounds of it, Matt is mechanically ignorant about why it "just works" for him, you are no less an ignoramus because EVERY FUCKING MERCURY is idiosyncratic to start. If you were old enough or experienced enough to know, any small engine which is not either brand new or kept in 100% perfect serviced condition is a bastard to start -- if fuel is bad, if fuel pump is weak, if spark is weak or seg wring, if coil is (sometimes) weak (eg, when cold or damp) or 20 other minor factors. So, don't tell others how to start their out-of-tune motors.

I've got the shits with mine. Starting is fine but the last 12 months mine has become unreliable as. One day will run sweet, no stall, start every time run smooth. Next day it will struggle to run/ start and stall all the time. I've lost my shit so many times. Start it up the same every time and it's just so hit and miss. Ive change tanks/ fuel lines everything. Its a 2003. Had it at the mechanics heaps and they can't find anything.

@MattKellyFishing
@MattKellyFishing 6 лет назад
I'm not sure - I could easily be wrong. I think Mercury still produce smaller outboards in Japan (as well as some in the USA), however it's my understanding that the Sea Pro's are all made by Tohatsu (which are almost certainly made in Asia).
@jeansandmyshirt

if you would just pump the ball until you filled up the bowl in the carb it would start first or second pull with choke.
