In this video I walk you through the 100 hour/annual engine service for the Mercury 40/50/60 HP Four Stroke engine, which covers the oil and oil filter change, changing the lower unit gear oil, replacing the fuel filter, inspecting the thermostat, propeller and shaft as well as greasing the grease points on the engine.

Ive heard there a water pickup filter in the foot. My wanna check that too. I had a evenrude that took a poop on me last week due to a failed thermostat only 50 hrs on the motor destroyed the engine. Just bought a brand new boat with a 6o hp mercury and it will get a thermostat every year.

@RFishingtx
@RFishingtx 5 месяцев назад
@mistrcrvr I shouldn’t have used good but should have said normal. It has to do with the hub design on the spitfire props that requires the prop to have a tiny bit of play back and forth.

Did you replace the seals on the upper / breather screws in the lower unit housing? Is it better to remove both of the screws when changing the gear oil? Thanks for such a great video!
@RFishingtx
@RFishingtx 3 месяца назад
@dwainlsmith Thanks for the kind words. I did not replace any seals on the lower unit screws. When draining the lower unit gear oil, it’s best to remove the bottom screw first and then the top screw which then allows the pressure to release allowing the oil to drain out. In essence you are removing both screws but after the gear oil is pumped back in you replace them one at a time. I hope that answers your question.

Great vid. Does doing the service yourself void the factory warranty?
@RFishingtx
@RFishingtx Месяц назад
@@onthehill7690 I’m not 100% on this but it’s my understanding that if you keep your receipts and keep a record of the maintenance you performed then your warranty is still good.

Why would you not for the gear oil fill it from the top bolt that was removed? So then you wouldn’t have to quickly reattach the bottom bolt.
@RFishingtx
@RFishingtx Месяц назад
You fill from the bottom in order to push the air in there out. If you were to fill from the top, then you wouldn’t get that air out and the lower unit would not be full of oil like it’s supposed to be.

Very good video. I do have a question though. Do you have to change the in inline fuel filter? That one is hard to get to. And if it is not required to change on the annual, then how often is it recommended to change? Thanks in advance.
@RFishingtx
@RFishingtx 5 месяцев назад
@hifivingstarfish6885 I’m glad you brought this up and based on your question, I will put a video out very soon covering this. Although Mercury does not provide clear guidance on the in line fuel filter, it should technically be replaced at the 100 hour or annually whichever comes first. With that said, I would say that a lot of folks (myself included) don’t change them out as often as we should.

Isn’t there a second fuel filter on that motor?
@RFishingtx
@RFishingtx 5 месяцев назад
@kevinwright1152 The maintenance manual only calls for the changing of the low pressure fuel filter. After you brought this question up, I looked to see if there is another filter on maybe the high pressure side but couldn’t find anything. I know the higher horse power motors do have multiple filters but not sure this one does.
@hifivingstarfish6885

@@RFishingtx The second fuel filter is below the oil filter and aft about 5 inches. It is coverd by a rubber sleeve and you can't see it unless you pull away the black sleeve. Once you pull the sleeve, you'll see the while fuel filter.
