you did not mention that when you start engine the new filter will take oil to fill it thus lowering the amount of oil in the engine and YOU need to check the oil level again and add more oil if necessary!!! This could be very important !
Donavan Aja Thank you for pointing that out. I did notice on mine, the oil drains out of the filter and into the sump when the engine is off, but you should still check it after you run it like you said.
Also - there are markings on the engine showing exactly how much oil they take. This INCLUDES the amount that cycles thru oil filter. Always a good habit to double check but as long as you follow what your engine takes - you’ll be good. You do need to be careful because some engines lie. The new Yamaha VMAX 150 is a good example of that. Calls for 4.3 and it’s closer to 6 if I remember correctly.
Tip for the young players.... If you prime your filter, ie. Pour enough oil into the filter that the media absorbs it, you don't have a big difference in oil level change and you also have oil pressure immediately rather than waiting for the filter to prime as the engine runs.
Great job. That’s how I change my oil on my 60 hp. Also something I just learned. If you want to get rid of the hard water spots on the motor just use a mixture of 50/50 of white vinegar and water. I was shocked how well it works.
Thank-you... great video. I have watched a bunch of videos , and a lot of the other ones go way too fast!!! You take it slow and it’s easy to follow. Appreciate it. Gotta get to the store and grab some supplies and change my oil on my merc 60 HP!
Hey thanks to your videos I was able to do an oil change and lower unit gear lube change for the first time by myself! Would also love to see a video on greasing all parts of the boat!!
@@clearwaterfishing no, not at all. The one concern I have is that I ordered an oil change kit for the engine that came with filter, a new o-ring for the drain screw, a little plastic deal for directing the oil away from the drain (which I didn’t use, because I went with your advice and trimmed up/turned the motor and it wasn’t needed) and just THREE quarts of oil. After changing it, it looked fine/full on the dipstick, but I’ll certainly check it after running it to make sure more oil isn’t needed. I also had a little cloudiness in my lower unit oil that drained, but it wasn’t bad. Going to do some research on that, but hoping it isn’t a big deal. It wasn’t white by any stretch, but seemed slightly tainted as if there may have been a little water in it. I bought the boat used a year ago and have run it a lot. By the looks of the engine oil (it was very black), both it and the lower lube probably needed changed last year.
@@BobSellersSings I might can help you with the gear lube. If you boat hadn’t been run in a few days before you drained the gear lube, the water would have been the first thing to drain out. The cloudiness could be the lube wasn’t full and got some air mixed in it. If you ran it recently, it would have looked milky. It doesn’t hurt to check after your next trip.
Cut the bottom off of an empty oil bottle and make your own funnel. It will take the next full bottle and fit like a glove when you pour it in the engine you will never spill a drop ever again just a trick I use. :)
Thank you so much for this video. The manual I received when I purchased my boat did not have torque specifications for the plug or the filter. Just wondering if that is important to use a torque wrench or not. Thanks again!
Great video. Thanks! I have the same engine except it's a Bigfoot. What type of gas do you recommend? I'm using 93 E10. Fellow boaters are telling me to use non ethanol racing fuel. What do you suggest?
I will fill mine to 9.5 or 9.8/10 (max) . So what if you had mercury oil in your outboard put in and you decide to re- add quicksilver bcoz you low on oil. Can you mix mercury oil with quicksilver? Also can you mix 25w40 with 10w-30?
I wouldn’t have an issue mixing brands of oil that are the same weight. I don’t recommend mixing weights of oil. Maybe if it is was a small amount because it was low (which is much better than running it low).
hi i have a mercury likes you, today after i washed the boat, try to run the motor, when key in won't crank, than i turn on star anyway sound like to run, but not, can you tell me what happened ,thanks
Hello I don’t know if you ever had this issue I have. My boat will not get to plain out under a load. Max RPMs 3000 Would you know. I did fuel pump fillet new gas drained old new spark plugs. no alarms 🚨 or anything like that.the guy that did my oil change. Not sure if he made a mess inside before it was a clean engine compartment. Now it’s wet Thanks 🙏🏾
Well thank you for replying. No it dose not bog out it start up don’t sound bad or anything just wen I go out to get to plain out it dose not go above the 3000 is it. No alarms beeps
I've had this issue twice. Once after I hit a log and bent the prop just a little. The second time I ended up finding my fuel line was pinched. Not sure how it happened but straightening it out got me back to 100%
Mercury recommends every 100 hours, but I don't have an hour meter on mine. I fish 1-2 times a week and I change it once a year. If you fish 3-4 times a week I would change it twice a year.
4 quarts seems too high. For my Mercury 2008 60 hp 4 stroke, 3 liters or 3.2 quarts of 10W30 recommended by the manual. Checked at www.mercruiserparts.com/oil-capacity-chart-4-stroke-outboards 60 FourStroke 996cc, 4 cylinder 3.17 QT. (106 oz.)
