J B Nancy. Your hair was beautiful. Thank you for being kind to the young freshmen who showed up at your parties. You were memory worthy. Jonathan understood. We all did
Not much else to tell. The song was written about a girl named Nancy. She had beautiful wavy dark hair and a kind nature. Everyone who met her sort of fell for her. She was dating him when he wrote the song. We were freshmen at OU and while some older crowds shunned our uninvited appearances, she welcomed us and mentored us on social cues and how to fit in with the “in crowd” which at that time was The Flaming Lips and Chainsaw Kittens and their friends. I was sorely out of my depth as a straight edge guy, sucking on blow-pops and sipping Gatorade. She liked my moxie and my resistance to the peer pressure(acid & weed mostly)...lol.
I took a class with the guy who directed this video. He told us he pitched the idea to the band (who barely listened to the pitch- just giggled the whole time) stood up and said 'It's great. But all the actors need to be black and we want llamas in it." Then they walked out. He found a llama farm in the middle of Illinois and shot the band scenes there. The rest is at what used to be Star Glacto car wash in Chicago on Elston. Pretty great, but thats all I got.
@dannyapeshit Just saw your comment after I posted mine. I agree 100 percentile. Though I still had a lot of fun in the 90s at some good shows. Dinosaur Jr., Jellyfish, The Violent Femmes, Faith No More.. though one could also argue those guys formed in the 80s or late 80s as well. Jellyfish started out as Beatnik Beach, most of them did I think. Then they formed Jellyfish in 1991 I think. Long time ago.
Struts and Frets by Jon Skovron. Random book my mother picked up for me, but I love it, finished it after two days lol. There's a song list in the back of the book, and I'm trying to listen to them all.
@dannyapeshit remind me somebody, what does indi/alternative/college rock of the 90's have in common with hiphop- other than the date? agree with you on the fugazi/pavement point o' course. the best music is never discovered by the populace, and even by the discerning..often after the fact!
@goodmood3 not so sure about that. The good Rock bands like this band, Pavement, Fugazi and BJM remained under the radar. Remember the 90's was mainstreamed by all that alternative garbage eg. Limp Bizkit, Korn, Creed and Blink 182. It was cool to be hardcore, goth or skate punk. (hated it) And hip hop in the 90's being a better argument, though is still questionable. The 80's was when Hip Hop actually had messages and a lot of fun with legends like EPMD, Public Enemy, NWA and Run DMC.
Wanna ask but I just stare Can I run my hands through your car wash hair [2x] drillin' a hole with my soul In the sand Diggin' for gold For the hole [whore?], in the bed Catchin' a ride from a band I sat in the back of the van They tried to make me understand 'cause if I'm not in a band, don't mean I'm square And if I am, well then I don't care wanna ask but I just stare Can I run my hands through your car wash hair number two has got me confused Hope I'll always be numbers one and three [2x] wanna ask but I just stare Can I run my hands through your car wash hair [2x] drillin' a hole with my soul In the sand Diggin' for gold For the ho, in the bed Catchin' a ride from a band I sat in the back of the van They tried to make me understand That if I'm not in a band, doesn't mean I'm square And if I am, well then I don't care wanna ask but I just stare Can I run my hands through your car wash hair [2x] you said, hell, well I don't care If you run your hands through my car wash hair Wanna ask but I just stare Can I run my hands through your car wash hair You said, hell, well I don't care If you run your hands through my car wash hair Wanna ask but I just stare Can I run my hands through your car wash hair You said, hell, well I don't care If you run your hands through my car wash hair Wanna ask but I just stare Can I run my hands through your car wash hair.
Yuval Legendtofski Right!! Only people I knew that listened to Mercury Rev were me and my ex in high school. Gotta give him the cred. for introducing me though. We actually seen them in concert in Orlando back then in the 90’s. Love them
@goodmood3 I'd have to say the 80s were the best :) But the 90s were a close run. After 1996 though too many bands started sounding too much like each other, grunge took over way too much.. I've never been so sick of flannel and burnt colors and still sick of that today. I was an alterna-teen/grunge teen.. so I got sick of it at about 25 years old.. oh yeah I was a teenager till I was 25 too :) Look up The Sugar HIll Gang Rappers Delight, any Sir Mix-Alot track, and the Beastie Boys are 80s.
