Guys Ive said it before and Ill say it again, these are the most well produced, easy to follow, and all around best boat maintenance videos on youtube BY FAR. Please please keep up the great work!
Thanks mate. I’m in the process of changing my warped prop shaft and needed some guidance in changing these seals. You are a legend. Hi from south Western Australia 👍
Great video, John. Thanks for the guide. One question…are the seals installed properly? The service diagram mates the 2 seals with the aluminum against each other. Just checking
You actually dont need that special tool, Mercury included it. Once the prop is off, remove the thrust washer. Inside the thrust washer there is a little key you can pry the metal cap off of. Then, you flip that key upside down and put it back on the shaft making sure it engages the three little tabs on the bearing carrier just beside the shaft. You can then slide the prop back on and turn it by the prop with a big ol 1 1/16" socket and a breaker bar. My 1980s 25 mercs had these (had an 82&84, same setup as this one)
HI, I have a 1987 Mercury 25 hp 2 stroke outboard and wonder if you know if the process on this motor is similar to replace the prop shaft seals for our motor?
William Winters as do I. I’ve replaced these lower unit seals before and still have some leak and will just end up replacing all the lower unit seals this month and John started uploading at the perfect time! Haha
On the inside of the lower unit housing for the carrier there is ALLOT of black carbon like crud and some white-ish colored crud. Perhaps Loctite type but resembles dried out plumbers putty. That appears to be keeping me from getting to the carrier o-ring and trying to remove the carrier. Suggestions to get that retainer plate loose given the crud would be appreciated as I don't want to scratch up the inside of the housing!
Hi, I have watched your video and it has help. But I have been trying to find the right tool , does anyone know who has this one. I order one and it ended up being a 4 prong. I need the 3 prong.
