I was at a record store in 1985, at the import section. I pulled out Don't Break the Oath. A tall metal dude next to me said, "Get it, it's good." I bought it. The rest is history.
You can say that Mercyful Fate don't sound like traditional black metal, but they completely helped pave the way for the genre to become what it is now. Satanic music pioneers.
Mercyful Fate deserves more respect. I guess it is somehow underrated. Talented musicians ! They are among the greatest ones. Sure, Diamond´s vocal catches anyone´s attention at first, but their musical combination sounds great.
Do you have any idea how many time Metallica covered MF songs? Hell, they had King Diamond do vokills sometimes for Metallica when they covered the songs.
this is the band/the sound i had always wished post-Killers Iron Maiden had evolved into, mad as hell i only discovered them just recently and missed out all these years
Yep and I'll see them headline the UK festival bloodstock open air alongside judas priest as the other headliner. Saxon and Phil anselmo with the illegals performing a pantera set list. Legends all re United in one event
people love King and for good reason, but the distinguishing feature of early Fate was how it always sounded like Hank and Michael were just trying to keep up with Timi and Kim
Got the cover of Dont Break the Oath tatted on my arm. These guys changed my life. I am forever grateful. And to my great friend Kristoffer, I will never forget when u took me backstage to meet this legend. We are metalheads forever.

Was at that show!! So many memories of great shows at the Country Club. Proud moment taking my daughter to go see her first King Diamond show 2 years ago at the Wiltern 2 years ago. She was blown away!!
Met Timi Hansen at Milwaukee Metal Fest nack in 1987! He was a very nice person who gave time to chat, giving me a wonderful memory! He is definitely missed. Rest in peace!
Great musicans! Such a tight playing! The music is quite complex, and they still were a pretty young band. Much Respect! KIng Diamond's voice is something you can love or hate, nothing inbetween. I love him! He can tell ghost stories. His voice is not that extreme since it can convey moods and moments. A great singer and still a weird performer. Our darker sides cannot be denied, KD makes them show. Early Mercyful Fate would be crucial to modern metal and rock!
Yeah, this is about the only song I like from them. I don't really like KD's vocals but the music I find pretty complex, kinda like a galloping horse here and I like it. The vocals even work here too.

For a brief moment, my excitement got the better of me, and I fooled myself into thinking this might be new Mercyful Fate. Jumped the gun on that. Still, nothing wrong with revisiting a classic....
Was stationed in Germany in 85 Army Nuremberg and while in the barracks my next door soldiers were blasting MF I came over and was instantly a fan especially "Desecration of Souls" extremely rhythmic guitars
I STARTED LISTENING TO MERCYFUL FATE BACK IN THE MID/LATE 1980s, AFTER A BAND I JAMMED WITH PLAYED ONE OF THEIR SONGS AND I HAD TO IMPROVISE TO IT ON BASS.....OMG.....AFTER THE JAM SESSION I SEARCHED OUT THER MUSIC AND GOT IT ON CASSETTE.....SOON AFTER CDS CAME OUT AND I GOT "MELISSA" WHICH BLEW MY MIND....BEEN A FAN EVER SINCE.....
Ahhh memories, I remember seeing them on their first U.S. tour. The thing that impressed me was they played as strong, tight and clean as the lp. Lets not forget, great songs as well.
WOW! I have never seen this footage before. It took me THIRTY YEARS to finally catch Fate when they came through Washington D.C. for the 9 tour. An awesome show!

@@nocturnalferalguitarist I do too, my ears are pretty bad at deciphering the lyrics, I can't understand half of what anyone says, but I think it's because I am listening to the guitars, the drums, bass, and the gelling of them of them all together, but I do suck at guessing what they're saying.

Awesome, I know this guys music for 40years now Great Dane band, King Diamond voice sounds the Same as always not affected by time. Call it dark metal or however who cares? Great display of Heavy Rock.
Have heard this song on just about every demo bootleg or official release on reel to reel tape vinyl cassette and cd. This is an incredible version sound wise.

i remeber looking at different albums to expand my metal library and i clicked on merciful fates melissa album this band became one of my all time favorites almost missed out on it too
Same as me, into the coven was the first song i ever heard from MF, and then I went onto Don't break the oath album and most of it is some of the best stuff i've ever heard, 'The Oath' is my favourite song from MF.
I brought don’t break the oath a while back and as I was looking at the docket someone had written long live Mercyful fate on it and yes long live this ripper band
