In this essay, C.S. Lewis explains the Christian belief that an evil power, currently ruling the world, raises questions about God's will and the existence of evil. He argues that God's allowance of free will explains this paradox. Free will enables true love, goodness, and joy, but also allows the possibility of evil. Lewis highlights that without free will, creatures would be like machines, incapable of genuine happiness or moral actions.
Lewis discusses the problem of evil and how the misuse of free will by both humans and supernatural beings (like Satan) has led to suffering and chaos. He explains that God's design for humanity is to find ultimate happiness and purpose in Him, as He is the "fuel" humans were created to run on. History, according to Lewis, is filled with humanity's futile attempts to find happiness apart from God, resulting in recurring failures and moral decay.
God's response to this state of affairs included providing a moral conscience, inspiring "good dreams" or myths about resurrection and redemption across cultures, and choosing the Jewish people to reveal His nature and moral law. The culmination of this revelation was in the person of Jesus Christ, who claimed divinity and offered forgiveness of sins, which, if not true, would be either lunacy or deceit. Lewis concludes that Jesus's claims force us to decide whether He was indeed the Son of God or a madman, leaving no room for viewing Him merely as a great moral teacher.
