stitcher64 In the 1962 version yes I think she was laughing at him. But in this version, I like to think she is doing a coy laugh because she likes him and likes hearing him saying her name.
EXACTLY! THANK YOU! It’s because you freaking made fun of him. I just performed this in my theatre company, and that part makes me want to just yell at her every time. 🙄
TRUE! I tried out for the music Man musical that I am doing with a children's theatre group and I tried out for amerillis but ended up as Gracie shinn!
I know, right? But so amazing: "I understand you four have hated one another ever since Kindergarten." "YES!" "Yup." "Well. From now on - mark my words - they will never be seen without one another! You, Sir, sing it low. Sing bass." 🎶 #Happens. ** Harkouts to #SiouxCityIA and #WheatonIL (and thereabouts). +++ from the granddaughter of Jenny Ann Moss 🇺🇸
YessssssssssssssSir, YesssssssssssssSir. And when the man dances, certainly boys, what else? The piper pays him...... YessssssssssssssSir, YesssssssssssssSir. But he doesn't know the territory!!!! I've been to Mason City, Iowa where they celebrate Meredith Wilson. It took him 8 years to write this. I thought "Lida Rose/Will I Ever Tell You (superimposed)" was just amazing when they were singing the two completely different songs together and a horse and carriage came clopping by..... brilliant!
I can't tell you how grateful I am for you posting this full movie to youtube. I love this rendition of this musical; it's my absolute favorite rendition of this story. I love it all and it sticks in my mind so damn well. God bless
She's simply terrific with everything. The original "Music Man" is so special to my family; but hearing her in this rendition helped make this an admirable follow up.
If Harold spent nearly as much time learning music as he did scamming, he’d make a pretty good music teacher. He obviously understands rhythm and beat.
i love the irony in "it's a large plot point that hill doesn't know one note from another" while he is in a musical and therefore the audience sees him singing and dancing like nobodys business. the way he gets the schoolboard to be a barbershop quartet demonstrates he has solid relative pitch & rudimentary conducting basics at LEAST. silly billy. perhaps his motivation in being a con man rather than a legitimate music man(tm) was more laziness than a genuine lack of ability...
@@lakeswirl6985 That’s a brilliant observation and so true. But if one wants to make sense of the statement, “you don’t know one note from another,” you could explain it as referring to him not knowing where the notes are on the band instruments themselves. Anybody can whistle or sing (which, of course, he could do very well.) I’ve wondered too, why people love the “con man” so much? I think people admire him because he is so good at what he does (even though it is dishonest.) And, being attractive and charming doesn’t hurt.
@@ThePianoMan1953 I don’t think everyone can sing. At least not naturally. Many can with training. And not everyone can whistle either. Maybe the draw to conmen is the same as the draw to badboys. A lot of people fall in love with murderers and convicts too.
I admit, Kristin did a fantastic job and did the role as Marian well. For me, the biggest surprise was Molly Shannon as the mayors wife. She really showed she can do musical theater as well as being a comedianne, and Matthew... WOW!
When I was a boy, I played Winthrop in my school's elementary play. Now that I'm older, the nostalgia hits hard and brings a huge grin to my face. Also, Broderick took a little getting used to, but I think they cast him and Chenowith perfectly (but that's just my opinion.) Chenowith has some wonderful pipes! Sing woman, sing!
I was cast as Marian for my musical! I'm so excited! Even though all the odds were against me, I nailed my audition and got the role! Those high notes on My White Knight and Goodnight My Someone will really make my performance. I perform in a few months! Edit: My best friend also got a lead! She got the part of Amaryllis. I am so excited to do the Goodnight My Someone Scene with her! And she's excited that she gets to call me an old maid in front of hundreds of people. Second Edit: One month away from opening night. I have gotten my costumes and I am so excited! I love Music Man. The original film is better than the remake, just saying. But this one is also a great film, you just can't replace the original. Third Edit: Opening night is in 6 days. STRESS!!! But it'll be great! I need more sleep... Fourth Edit: We closed the show last Saturday and I am so sad about it. I loved the show so much. To any people out there who are pursuing theater or are in a production right now, ENJOY EVERY MINUTE because it's only there so long until it's gone. Music Man will always hold such a special place in my heart, it's the best show I've ever done. The shows went amazing and I can honestly say it was the best thing I've ever done. The happiest 4 months of my life. MM helped me get through the hardest time in my life! But it was also the happiest time in my life. The contrast is interesting. It was the hardest time but it was the happiest I've ever been. I LOVE MUSIC MAN. Music Man FOREVER.
@@13blackcatzzz Wow, that barbershop quartet was just amazing!! Amazing how M. Wilson wrote two completely different (and amazing) songs and superimposed them like Lida Rose and Will I Ever Tell You. That was just genius! I guess it took him 8 years to write it because he wanted it to be perfect. It was!
I'm so glad this is fully on RU-vid. I grew up with this version, so although I can acknowledge the better acting and production in the 1962 version, this one still has my loyalty. Also, I just really like Matthew Broderick.
@@evelynsmith6997 His friend Marcellus calls him Gregory when he first arrives at the River City hotel, but I don't believe we ever get his last name in the show!
@@evelynsmith6997 The little boy's name is Winthrop, and his sister and mother say that he has had trouble communicating ever since his father passed away.
Gorgeous remake of this classic movie. Elegant costumes, great dance numbers, beautiful singing, and so much joy! This film represents the best of American values in film making.
I believe this remake of the original musical classic is truly a magical, musical classic with its amazing, incredible music, especially its songs, like "76 Trombones" and "'Till There Was You".
@@spencerbeard7490 Truly! They quartet and Marian were strolling down the street singing two different songs at once and a horse and carriage came clopping by... It was absolutely "magical." ❤ I wish I could go there in a time machine.
The finale was amazing. It gives me goosebumps and reminds me of my band days. Marching bands are my favorite kinds of bands. Ever since the 17th century, marching bands have always brought musical joy to soldiers and civilians alike.
I have the 1962 movie version on my regular viewing rotation. I've been in love with Shirley Jones for nearly 50 years. When this version came out, I didn't even give it a chance. But now, over 15 years later, I've watched it with a less prejudiced perspective and find it ultimately satisfying and emotional, especially at the end. The producers made numerous fundamental story changes which have effectively separated this fine adaptation from its incomparable predecessor with grace, style and finesse. I Thank You for putting this out for viewing.
I admire your ability to express those thoughts so well. I did miss the song "Being in Love" although "My White Knight" was a fine alternative. I thought Kristin was amazing but I really thought "Zaneeta" was so dead on, I couldn't believe it!!!
I was searching for the 1962 version, but was pleasently surprised by Broderick's proformance in this. I think he did quite well, and its a good version but will never replace the earlier one with Shirley Jones and Robert Preston.
do you prefer the live musical or the first film adaptation, this version was created as a tv film but the first was a original movie based on the Broadway act, that's why they had the same characters
The Music Man was never one of my favorite musicals, but with Matthew Broderick, I love it. I really enjoyed he and Kristin Chenoweth together. Well done Mr. Broderick!
I absolutely loved this remake! Matthew Broderick is fantastic as Harold Hill. Kristin Chenoweth is lovely as Marian Paroo. Victor Garber is great as Mayor Shinn. Molly Shannon as Mrs. Shinn was a delight.
Of two minds; the original Hill had a sleazy quality of a slightly older, traveling con man that is missing in this presentation. Obviously, MB is very talented, but for my taste (although nobody called me for advice), he's just too, too clean cut and nice. The sprinkling of black characters, a gesture of fairness, falls flat and underscores the little role played by blacks in small Iowa towns of this period.
Clayton Riisoe ... I agree the 1st one from 1962 was the best. But let's face it the top 3 persons in this film had big shoes to fill... Robert Preston and of course Shirley Jones and a Young Ron Howard. One good thing the as close to the original film as possible.
Well I tried getting through this but just couldn't do it. I watched the first train scene and realized it wasn't going well. Not only did they change the words but they messed up the cadence. Then when mb attempted Trouble, it just took a big turn for the worse. It's even worse than the butchering of Miracle on 34th street with what's his name from Will and Grace
@@loriforges6304 I just saw it and I gotta say Hugh is absolutely perfect for the role. I might even prefer him over Preston I’d have to think about it though
I know I’m late but I heard from the Musical just the day when I decided to see Hugh Jackman on Broadway at the beginning of 2020. Now its 2022 and I’m still a proud ticket holder but hadn’t the chance to travel from Germany to New York through all the Covid restrictions and all. In preparation I watched the original movie with Preston / Jones and was so impressed…What a wonderful story with great actors and cheerful lovely music. I wasn’t familiar with any of that, but I was especially impressed by Robert. He was so charismatic, cheerful, loud, and convincing that it’s impossible for anybody not to find him absolutely credible as a salesman and as an actor of a salesman. I found it a wonderful classy musical film made in 1962 a period which I love to see movies because I’m a massive Elvis fan. (He’d had been a wonderful Harold Hill, too) And then I found out about the 2003 adaption off the musical movie. I decided to watch it not caring very much which actors would have been in the cast. While the train scene at the beginning was rolling, I recognized this cigar smoking man who was just seen from nose to chin…This lips which holding this cigar looked quite familiar to me…. And wow how cool was that when I was finally recognizing that Matthew Broderick was giving the MM. It’s so amazing what authenticity he gives to the role of Harold. I was really amazed how different the Harold can be taken and how good both can be in their own way. The Harold of Matthew was smooth, sweet, and cheeky. It is the perfect version for television because you see his cute doe eyes, pouty lips in every close up and hear his mesmerizing voice. He shows a totally different way of salesmanship, subtle and charming.... less obvious than Preston’s way but soooo convincing to me. His uhhh and ahhs while praising Eulalie Mackecknie Shinn’s raising of her feet are priceless to me. I love that Matthew gives Harold a bit of his own personality and interpretation. I was surprised of his beautiful soft singing voice because I never saw him as a Broadway actor… This very many tongue twisters he did with perfection and facility as much as he does dance ….I simply loved to see him dancing and singing through the story…especially the dance with Marian during Social Ball rehearsals, the dance in the library and the dance between Marcellus Washburn and him during the cheerful ‘The sadder but wiser girl for me’ song. Almost unbelievable he was born at the time the original film was made and is only 3 years younger than Robert when he did his movie. To make a long story short, for me both version are very good material to get prepared for this beautiful stage play I never knew before… I partly understand why some of you criticise Matthew’s performance because he is absolutely no Robert. But he didn’t have to for me. He gives Harold his touch and I love it. And of course I adore Victor Garber and Molly Shannon together…Hilarious… Thank you Robert and Matthew for giving me the Music Man. Now I’m ready for Broadway and can’t wait for Hugh Jackman ermm Harold Hill rocking River City. THANK YOU @Andre Morais for bring this here on youtube.
Hard to be believe the adorable little boy who played Winthrop in this film is the same guy who's now playing the Joker in Gotham, even as a child he was a really good actor.
This show means litaraly everything to me it was the first musical I was ever apart of and it really kicked off my life long love of theater and it warms my heart to think about the memories of putting on this production even though it's been since 6th grade it feels like yesterday
First number with the salesmen in the train, is one of the best patter numbers written. Right up there with similar style numbers in Guys and Dolls and My Fair Lady.
I don't know how I missed this in 2003, I consider myself a bona fide musical theatre man...anyhow...this was delightful. I really really enjoyed it. I loved how the town was filled with African Americans and it was just no big deal. Of course, that was not the reality but the world should have been. Christine was fabulous. Wow...and the direction. Great Job!!!
It was a television movie, so if you weren't watching TV then, and paying attention to what was about to air, then you wouldn't have known, as many of us didn't.
@@rajlalitha3809 Actually he is perfect for the role of Harold Hill. Glad the producers of the revival that will be opening on Broadway when it reopens have cast Hugh Jackman.
I enjoyed the remake of the movie. The casting is brilliant. Of course you can not replace Robert Preston and Shirley Jones. They are iconic. Amaryllis and Winthrop really shined. I believe they have bigger careers ahead of them.
Poor and injusticed Barbara Cook here. Everybody remembers Shirley Jones and forgets Cook who introduced the role of Marian and all the songs .Cheno sang here. Shirley Jones didnt sing My White knight like did both Barbara and Chenoweth. She sang other song named Being in love in the movie.
Jeff Brunker dont forget Barbara Cook who introduced the role of Marian with Preston and that she only didnt make the movie because Jack Warner wanted a big star to sell the movie so Meredith Willson had to choose between Preston and Barbara Cook and as he wouldnt have made the movie without Preston Shirley Jones was cast after Willson rejected Jean Simmons because he wanted a soprano who could dance as Marian. .Both Preston and Cook received the Tony Award but neither him not Shirley were nominated for an Oscar but the film was nominated and received one award Best Adapted Musical score.
Well, that's very bold...predicting that 15 YEARS(!) after this first aired...lol. The kid who played Winthrop did okay....he's a working actor with some nice credits. "Amaryllis", on the other hand, only had a small handful of credits and hasn't worked in ten years... As the late (SO great!) Meat Loaf almost said - one out of two ain't bad...
I remember learning "76 trombones" in high school music class, in the late 70s / early 80s. ☺ Kristen Chenoweth has a beautiful singing voice ! 🎶 And Ronnie Howard's "Winthrop" is hard to beat ! 🎭
I tell u it’s a close one. This movie was all around the better movie I have to say because the filming and choreography was just better. Robert Preston was the man….but this movie was so fantastic. Srry but true.
As someone who's never seen the original, I thought this was great. You can say it wasn't as good as the original, but you can't say it's terrible, because that's completely biased.
plupap ..youre are right this isn't terrible. I grew up when the big thing was the Music Man in 1962. This is a well made remake of a master piece. I did enjoy this vision completely.
Daniel DuBois Mathew Broderick I was miscast as Harold Hill. Watch Robert Preston and you get the depth of the character. Broderick is mechanical in his performance and vanilla. Zero charisma. Harold Hill is spellbinder and bigger than life. Broderick is anything but. Watch the original. Night and day. In fact, when they made the original movie the studio wanted Frank Sinatra to play Harold Hill. Meredith Wilson said no. Only Robert Preston could play Professor Hill. I was in the chorus of a stage version starring Van Johnson and Linda Michelle. Mr. Johnson blew Broderick out of the water. Dick Van Dyke also toured in The Music Man. He too was great! Broderick plays cute and innocent very well. Hill is not cute and anything but innocent. Broderick was miscast.
Been watching this movie for years and took me until today to feel that soul crushing passion that Marian and Harold have for each other. The footbridge scene literally makes me cry everytime because Marian looks so in love and Harold looks like he doesn't know how to handle it. :')
You mean like the age difference of Marian and Harold? If I could criticize the original at all, I would say (and I've always thought) that Robert Preston seemed a bit old for innocent Marian. He was 16 years older in real life but seemed more then 20 years older. IOW, old enough to be her father. Not really, what I would call, a "Hollywood dream couple."
Omg I didn’t know this existed! How much fun!!!!! :) As someone who is a huuuuuuge fan of the original, I just want to say how much I do love and appreciate this version so very much! The same parts that always make me cry still did in this one… beautiful… thank you!
I agree with you completely. I remember the original but really love this.... it's like something beautiful with a fresh coat of paint. I thought Kristin was angelic!!! "Zaneta" was nothing short of adorable!! What a great performance by her.
One of my favorite musical! Such amazing music! So blessed and honored I was able to be in my schools production! MEREDITH WILSON IS AMAZING, AND NEEDS TO BE MORE APPRECIATED.
One of my favorite musicals. My high school had auditions for the Sound of Music this weekend and I'm watching every musical I can find until tomorrow when we find out our roles. So far I've watched My Fair Lady, and I'm twenty minutes into this one
i’m from the town this musical originated from, and i love seeing every musical and movie of it, because they’re all so different and the same in every way!
Obviously, a lot of effort went into the making of this musical and I found it enjoyable, the barbershop singing very good, dare I say nearly as good as The Buffalo Bills? The original is a hard act to follow but I think this is a brave, worthy remake
Did you even see the guy that they cast to play Hill, WTF pathetic does not even begin to come close to describing his performance (WAY too soft spoken and not nearly pushy nor slippery enough). Admittedly they were never going to match Robert Preston but that was no excuse. I mean if they had tried and failed I could understand and even accept, but they didn't even try. Hell they didn't even try to try!!!
@@lifeontheledgerlines8394 I thought they were brilliant. Loved Lida Rose/Will I Ever Tell You (superimposed) while the horse and buggy clopped by! That was the most magical moment in the "new" movie for me. "He'll Pop....... the question." Brilliant. But who was the pretty blonde (bride) in that hotel scene. She was amazing.
This movie was so unbelievably done. Absolutely genius from beginning to end. Matthew was so incredibly smooth. They picked the cast so well. The arrangement of the orchestral work was amazing and magical. I don’t get all the crap hate on this movie. Robert was so dang good, but this movie does this story justice as well. Easily one of the greatest Broadway shows of all time.
FYI, it BEAT West Side Story for the Best Musical Tony Award of 1957. That speaks volumes about how Broadway was absolutely peaking, in this time period. Along came rock and roll...
Your comments.... all true. I'm a very traditional "old timer" and was very surprised at how much I really loved this 2003 remake. A lot of it had to do with the fact that I fell in love with Kristin Chenowith though. 🤔 I really loved the "Ye-Gods" girl.
I have done this play 3 times!! I know this by heart! I played Miss Marian(school),alma hix(localJRtheater), and Gracie Shinn(my local collage) I have many fond memories with is show!❤️❤️🎭
Just finished showing this to a room full of aged nuns in a monastery. They loved it, even though it wasn't the original. Much better than I'd feared, given how beloved the original is. Loved seeing Victor Garber as the villain a generation after he played Jesus in the film version of Godspell. Also, did anyone notice the rat fink salesman played by Patrick McKenna -- same actor who plays goofus Harold on the Red Green Show? (Both actors Canadian.) Highly recommended. One caveat: When I streamed this to TV screen it was dark. Be prepared to manually increase the brightness of the picture.
This video upload is excellent. The audio has been corrected and is faster than the original television broadcast. That version was soo slow it was almost unwatchable. Don't know why it was "stretched out". but even a second or two faster makes this one perfect. At last I can like this version. If you ever need to correct audio on a video you watch on You Tube, click on the little gear wheel on the screen and tweak it faster or slower until it is to your liking. Sometimes people change the speed to get around copyright issues.
I think you did a wonderful job on the video. I am actually very surprised that the full movie is up on You Tube, Usually you don't get a full older movie like this on YT, so thanks so much for posting it. My question is though that you have listed Cameron Monaghan as Winthrop Paroo. I thought that I had read that little Ronnie Howard played that part? I know it sounds crazy but I only want to watch the movie if he is in it. So I am just wondering if that was a typo or if I was misled with the info. that I read. Thanks again.
I C, thanks for getting back to me on that, I just discovered the movie the night I first commented so I didn't realize there was a second version. I did find the one with Ronnie Howard but I will view your too. Thanks again
We are doing this play at school. I had to watch it! And now I'm completely in love with it!!! Thanks for posting the full version! Now on to the original!!!
@@Pepperjohnson99 I got the farmers wife and a solo in wells fargo. The production wasnt good due to budget and the director but it was a good experience.
I hope you had fun! I was in it in 2019, and I was an ensemble woman... and a Grecian Urn 😭 It was very embarrassing, and I will say that a lot of our show was under mediocre, but it was a fun experience and I would definitely do it again.
+MB LaFantano heh this movie might as well be a prequel to Ferris Bueller. It could be like his great grandfather. I love the fact that both characters are almost the same, but just from different times
