Dear Merengue lovers, 🇩🇴
The first Areíto Arts workshop at the Afro-Latin Vegas event last month was "merengue tipico" and it was everything we'd hope for and more. We opened with a brief history of merengue music and the counterparts, roots, and variants; palos, gaga, mangulina, carabine, balsie, pambiche, and tipico/ripiao. We then ventured into the modern styles highlighting the notable artists of each generation. The workshop was like one big party where we learn to move and vibe with various Merengue rhythms. We ended with an impromptu animation of Dominican carnival music (Mambo Alibaba) for a final burst of energy. Merengue has such a deep and rich history and its culture dates back to the mid-1800s making it one of the oldest Afro-Carribean genres, we hope our workshop helped get guests closer to bachata by learning more about merengue and Dominican culture.
We used the demo as an opportunity to not only give a visual overview of the class but also to highlight an amazingly gifted artist and one of the living legends/pioneers of the modern perico ripao, Fefita la Grande, La Mayimba, who is one of the the oldest and most respected female artists that the Dominican Republic has birthed. She sings, dances and plays accordion all at the same time making her a huge inspiration to musicians and dancers alike. Fefita is the most notable woman in Merengue, but even more so she is one of the top Dominican artists.
