Merida’s Horse Gets Caught in a Balloon at Disney World Magic Kingdom During Small Princess Parade. A toddler ran out into the parade route. The father grabbed the toddler to safety, but the balloon the toddler was carrying kept going into the route and spooked the horse. Both Merida and the horse were okay. I recorded this video myself and I own all rights to this video.

This is an old comment, but what makes a dismount different from an emergency dismount? Just the fact that the horse is freaking out, or is it also a physically different technique?
@kaydollar2490
@kaydollar2490 Год назад
@@homeiswonderland it is definitely different because you gotta find good timing and the way you go down is different as the horse is moving
@scarlett8895
@scarlett8895 6 месяцев назад
Nornally you would dismount by putting all your weight on one leg stand on the stirrup and raising the other to go over the horse and to the ground. If you imagine the movement, you can easily realize that doing that with a crazed horse could be extrememly dangerous as by moving he could simply throw off your balance and make you fall, maybe with one of your feet still stuck in the stirrup, and drag you around or kick you. The emergency dismount is all about finding good timing, strongly holding onto the horse's maine with your hands and kind of leaning on him, letting go of your stirrups first to free your legs, and sliding down the side at the right moment.
@stellafraser8351
@stellafraser8351 Месяц назад
@scarlett8895 The only way that is EVER taught to dismount, is to take both feet out of stirrups to prevent any risk of being dragged.

As an ex cast member, I do firmly believe child leashes are a fantastic idea for kids at Disney for safety. However, it doesn't appear that it would have done a thing in this situation. Kid accidentally let go of the balloon. Merida did a wonderful job staying on and dismounting when safe, the handlers did great soothing and handling Jacob the horse, and the parade team was on standby but not getting involved and adding more issues. Overall, it was handled exactly how I expect cm's to handle it, wonderfully.

If the dad hadn't been watching his kid, they would have made it all the way to the horse and may have ended up getting hurt. The balloon being released by the kid as the dad did his job and pulled them back was a byproduct, but he DID keep his kid away from the horse. It was definitely an unfortunate situation and I'm sad that it happened, but without having his kid on a leash (I have complicated feelings about child leashes), he did the best that could have been expected when his kid started dashing out into the street. The speed at which kids do such things means the dad WAS watching his kid, and showed admirable reflexes in preventing this from being worse. Props go to all cast members involved in this situation (Merida, the horse handlers, and that manager, even the stage hand who followed Merida offstage to make sure she was okay). This could have ended VERY badly and instead only resulted in some frayed nerves. These cast members turned an unfortunate situation into a minor hiccup instead of the disaster that it could have ended up as. My only qualm is the mom who asks her kid why she's crying. BECAUSE THERE'S A HORSE IN DISTRESS AND SHE KNOWS IT AND IS PROBABLY A BIT SCARED. I would have cried too, at her age. You can't hold kids to the "hold it in" standard that adults hold themselves to. She "Let It Go" and let her feelings show. This is something that should not result in the kid being chastised. Let the kid who tried to run out to Merida know that there are times that you cannot just run out into a performance, but also kids who react to what they see (especially in such unprecedented times where kids are trying to process a LOT of bad news) shouldn't be chastised for showing emotion.

When he felt something wrap around his back legs, it triggered a natural instinct to buck it away. It's why, when a horse spooks themself in an arena, everybody just lets it run around the arena for a while to calm itself down before even attempting to approach it. The horse let the handlers stay near him, and calmed down in what, like 20 seconds? That's good training, and shows good trust between handler and horse. Disney actually has a rigorous training program for all horses that come to their ranch and will be used IN the parks. Tons of desensitization, tons of exposure to noises, people, etc. In this situation you can see the horse brace his hind end to see if whatever was touching him would stop, when it didn’t that’s when his horse instinct of “get it away” kicked in, also doesn’t help he couldn’t see what was “attacking” him. Props to the handlers and “Merida”, kept his feet moving in a circle to prevent a dead bolt down the slippery street, got him calm and all ended well. ZERO PROPS to the parent who allowed their kid to let a damn balloon go.

Not only big kudos to the rider for having a "velcro seat"/stayed with the horse very well until she could safely do an emergency dismount, but also BIG kudos to the walkers doing the right thing by calmly & quietly turning the horse until it settled (rather than jerk on the reins or hit the horse like soooo many people unfortunately do when a horse is scared, which only ever escalates the panic and often causes the horse to flip over backwards)!!! It's always a welcomed relief to see handlers/horsewomen/horsemen de-escalate a spooking horse with a soft and level headed presence to help guide the horse to calm down so they can help untangle it; and all without beating the horse for getting nervous over something. They deserve raises for sure!!!!🙌🐴👍

I love how Merida fully prepared by holding the reins a little tighter because she saw the balloons wrapping around the legs a bit. She immediately prepared for this situation in just a second and she stayed in the saddle in a prefect way. She's truly a amazing princess with riding skills. Also, i love how calm the employees stayed with the horse and how carefully they tried to calm it down and protect the people around from any danger. It takes a lot of skill and strength to keep a horse that big calm and with you. I hate the woman asking the girl ''why are you crying?'' The horse, the handlers, and the rider all handled themselves extremely well in this incident. The horse calmed down even with the "predator" still attached to his leg, listening to his handlers telling him it's OK. The rider did an awesome job of performing an emergency dismount in a long dress and jumping clear. Horses, regardless of size and presence, are big chickens. They run first, think later. It says a lot for this horse's training and his innate temperament that he did not drag the whole crew all the way to the stable area.

Wow at least they made Merida a equestrian not just a random actress cause that could have ended badly if she wasnt

With all the other strict I wonder if the Merida’s have to pass a riding test or something. If not then what luck that they hired an equestrian.

@@someonesomewhere9115 She *and* the handlers HAD TO know what they were doing for the sake of the crowd's safety. That horse had at least as much training as any big city mounted police horse. And instinct *still* took over when the balloon string wrapped around its hock. It could have bolted into the crowd in a blind panic. Kudos to the whole staff involved for keeping the animal, all of the actors, and the crowd safe! People, please remember, to keep common sense in mind when you are a bystander at parades! No matter how much training an animal has, self-preservation will take over and blind panic will cause a tragedy. Keep things like balloons, bubbles, and flashing lights out of the animals' sight!

@@meganfedor I know that. That Merida clearly rides and what idiot would have inexperienced horse handlers handling horses in a parade? And the lack of concern from most of those bystanders was scary. People don’t tend to realize how dangerous horses are or how fast they can move when they want to. I was once with a group of new riders who were putting a horse back in his field and didn’t know why I told them to stop at the gate. They were shocked when a galloping horse came into view and at how quickly he was moving (I’d heard him coming, they didn’t know what a gallop sounds like).

Merida would of had to take at least 2-3 lessons before she would be allowed to be on that horse. I wouldn’t call her an equestrian but she definitely knew some stuff about being around horses so that’s good

Props to the handlers and actress being actual professionals, situations like these are why it’s important to hire depending on credentials.

Well done to Disney for actually getting someone who could ride and not just one of the actress princesses. She handled it really well

This made me so anxious. I'm so glad that the cast members were okay and the horse was easily settled. Poor guy just got spooked.
