i will be doing more gardening videos in the spring but here is a video about the merkur progress maybe you haven't seen before..merkur for sensative skin
I have sensitive skin and ingrown hair-prone skin. I spent hours trying to research the blade exposures for the Merkur double edge safety razors. This video was the absolute best in helping me to arrive to a decision. Thank you!
I recently returned to DE razors after not having used one since my old-school Gillette adjustable back in the early 80's. I purchased the same razor featured in the video, and was at a loss for basic information, since Merkur doesn't feature any documentation. Thank you for the exhaustive info in the video. I also prefer the "Israeli reds" since they are much more forgiving than some brands. Also, thank you for the warnings regarding blade alignment. I bloodied myself slightly the first couple of times. This will be helpful.
cutting yourself is very common ( some very small cuts), after about 2 weeks of getting use to it i have not cut myself since, and that was years ago..
New user here. I've seen your great video and appreciate it. Just got the Merkur 570. Having trouble reloading it after blade installation. Can not get the adjustment rod to engage with the threaded rod. Doesn't appear to be any problem with construction although maybe tolerances are off? You zipped through that part quite quickly. Am I missing something about a special alignment or something while you are trying to screw it back together. I've tried everything and about to give up and send it back. Appreciate any help very much. Thanks
to dale.. if it was put together when you bought it, it should go back together just screw it in slow and avoid cross threading it. you may try to rub some shampoo on the threads to lube them
I'm sorry, whitedwarf29, but what do you mean by the "slash on the side of the head side"? I've tried aligning with the 5 and the "+" sign on the handle?
The Progress bends the blade, while many safety razors just hold it in place so the razor is essentially perpendicular to the handle. Does the angle on the Progress help or hinder the shave compared to the flat blade (unbent) safety razors?
Excellent demonstration. Thank you. Have you come across one similar (Merkur Progress I have amongst my collection) but with all-plastic (creme colour) handle and base of the head?
i haven't but then again i bought this razor like 8 or 9 years ago and i have not been looking sorry, sounds like a Chinese clone.. Btw this razor is every bit as good as when i bought it all those years ago
Thank you for your prompt reply. I have two Merkurs, both 'regolable', and seem genuinely Solingen / 'W. Germany'. That with the chrome-plated handle is similar to the one you nicely demonstrate. In both the adjusting mechanism is only in tightening (compressing) the head, as opposed to an independent mechanism as in the Gillette. The grading indicator ring in the all-plastic is just below the base. I am sorry I cannot attach photo. I bought these 32 years ago. I have used neither yet - just treasuring amongst my collection. Thank you again. @@whitedwarf29
@DolceGabbanaBYMAN I also have the HD.. because you can go milder with the Progress than the HD, I would suggest the progress.. and lastly the HD is a good razor , but its not adjustable
I have one and don't think it's an exact science when trying to figure out what number the blade is truly set to. This is becuase when i tighten mine all the was it's on the number 3, NOT on the plus or 1 or 5. So how do you know where to start using the actual numbers?
@@Bungle2010 Mine tightens down to 3.5. Whitedarf29 says that it's possible to turn "the metal part of the handle until the dot lines up with the +" I haven't tried this yet.
@@Bungle2010 Yes, the two alignment marks are on the same side. Do you have yours tightened down all the way? It doesn't really matter what my reference is, as long as I an consistent with the settings. For example from the my zero point of 3.5 I turn to the left until I get to 1.5. That is where I get a very nice shave. Next time I may go to 2.0 and see how that is . What number do you use?
1. tighten the plastic turner at the bottom of the handle all the way. don't tighten too tight just normal 2. turn the metal part of the handle with your hand till the dot lines up with the numbers wherever you want it. i do mine on the plus mark after the five to represent zero . Its up to you but that's how its done . one last thing "do not use tools to turn anything do it only with your hands with the blade out and do it slow"
very easy when putting it back together you simply line up the triamgle on the handle side of the blade holder with the slash on the side of the head side of the razor. once done start turning the dial till it stopps then turn back the other way to set the aggression of the cut
learning how to use a razor involves learning how to manually adjust the blade angle so turning a dial isn't necessary. using an open comb with short teeth is where you will find big improvements. Just rock the handle and you can decide "Exactly How Aggressive" the razor will cut. This is a fools razor.
