“Public television’s ‘In Performance at the White House’ closes its current season Sunday at 10 P.M. with a performance that takes place not at the White House but at a ranch in California’s Santa Ynez Valley. The occasion was taped early last month, and the list of 400 guests was headed by President and Mrs. Reagan, whose own ranch happens to be nearby. The young performer is Mark O’Connor, a 20-year-old fiddler, whose virtuosity is impressive. He plays, and the joint can’t keep from jumping. President Reagan, wearing western garb, makes a brief speech to observe, among other things, ‘I think the music we heard today reaches the heart of America.’”

“Dear Mark:
The President and Mrs. Reagan thought you would like the enclosed as a souvenir of the wonderful days they spent in Santa Ynez, California.
They so very much enjoyed hearing your wonderful performance and everybody here will be watching this Sunday night as the television show goes on the air nationwide.
From all of us, warmest congratulations.
Very sincerely yours,
Mabel H. Brandon
Social Secretary to the White House”

Mark, I currently take bluegrass lessons from a man named Gerald Jones. He tells me stories from long ago about you and everybody he played with. What an amazing list, I am blessed to have such a teacher.

Great video for historical reasons and for fiddle players as well! I was wondering if you were using a viola bow or a heavier bow as your tone is notably more solid and perhaps darker than the other fiddle players. I didn't start playing fiddle until I was 31 and my instructor used a heavier bow like 72 grams, (J. English bows/Snakewood). I switched over to a lighter bow lately as I am now in my 60's, I too grew up in the Greater Seattle area, Lake Hills and across the Lake from Seattle. I'm sure you remember. Great playing and looked like it was a fun time as well! What an honor to play for President Reagan who was a big Country Music fan himself.

Just found this channel and i found myself another legend. Do u have any advise on how to play alot without taring your right-hand index finger by holding the pick and play 1-4 hours everyday. I have a similar grip as you.
