Join us for a bird identification trivia game! The Merlin Bird ID app, developed by the Cornell Lab and powered by machine learning, will be put to the test. Can the app outperform an experienced birder and, you, our live audience? Using photos and sounds, we'll determine who can accurately identify the most bird species. This is an interactive game, so come ready to play! Throughout the game, we'll explore how Merlin “decides” on an ID. Our panelists will share their advice on how to identify tricky birds based on calls and appearance-plus, they’ll provide insights into birding during the migration season.

This was so well done - the game very much exceeded my expectations! I'm an experienced birder but have never spent time on the East coast, so there were some fun challenges. I really enjoyed learning how the Merlin App works even if I won't ever likely use it myself. I was glad to know it can't completely replace the human brain of an expert birder (yet)😉

I'm in the UK so very happy I managed to equal the audience score. Interesting to hear the info about begging calls, that explains a lot. I find it's not very good at those little contact calls most species make either. For me one of the best things about Merlin is the amount of public engagement it generates. It seems to grab the interest of the none birding general public when they get to see it in use. Both my partner and I now have friends who have downloaded it (having seen us use it) who have no other interest in wildlife apart from perhaps a general curiosity.

Sandhill Crane is so distinctive…they come in mass to Arizona and you can hear them before spotting them in the sky.

Hello, I wonder if anyone can help me with a quick question please. I use the Merlin app mostly for sound ID and I absolutely love it. An issue I have encountered is sometimes for a number of different factors, a recording disappears. I can only imagine that it didn’t save or has been swiped away in error. I use an iPhone for recording and have looked to see if I can locate the files but I can’t see them anywhere. Are the recordings saved onto the phone and is there a way to recover files? Thanks in advance and for giving novices like myself the opportunity to learn.

Your app is amazing the down part is that it does not show when the bird usually comes out like does it come out 5:00pm or 5:00am i hope you add this to your app ty😊
