We have a small private airport nearby. Some one over there owns a P-51 and only flies it Sunday morning at 9 bells. The sound has me running outside to see it. A few weeks ago "FiFi"(B-29 flew over. Yes it landed as a stop over at our little airport. The main runway is 2 miles long. More than enough for a B-29.

Although i am new to this, I feel that I must just mention something. In the early 50s I served in the RAF as a Flight engineer on Lancasters and Lincolns (and later on Shackletons) and I feel that I can contribute to the RR-Packard argument. there seem to be opinion the the US built engines were, in some way,superior. In actual operating conditions there was nothing to choose between them. In fact, as far as the RAF was concerned, the one point that Packard scored was the magnificent tool kits that came with the engines. Our ground fitters would hold lots as to who got one. Other than that, you certainly could not tell the difference between them by performance, definately not by sound. For what it's worth..

Yes and I have corrected that statement after I misread 'Merlin 66' (RR) for 'Merlin 266' (Packard) which went into the MK XVI built at Castle Bromwich. You aren't quite correct in saying Merlins were in short supply in the UK as we had the system of 'shadow' factories, Ford UK and aircraft manufacturers themselves building them. It was basic logistics to use a US source as we had Canada building Lancaster, Mosquito etc and the US about to use it in the Mustang.
@wilburfinnigan2142
@wilburfinnigan2142 6 месяцев назад
1chish..... the largest user of the Packard Merlin was the Lancaster Mk BIII of 3,040 of them built in England and 400 of them built in Canada as well as 1500 Canadian built Mossies and 1200 Hurrycanes, 1040 $hitfire MkXVI made in England got the Packard Built 266 merlin !!!! The Mustang only got the merlin because Packard was building them in the USA !!! ! !

@@wilburfinnigan2142 Oh look if it isn't old WilburSorearsedTractorbotFinnigan again spouting his anti British nonsense and still writing the same nonsense 10 years later... Your numbers don't work out Wilbur Old Son because of the 168,068 Merlin variants built, Packard produced 55,523. The Canada Car and Foundry produced 1,451 Hurricanes. However those shipped to Britain were often incomplete airframes and about 80% were delivered without an engine and those WITH an engine had exported RR Merlins not the Packard. Keep digging that hole Wilbur.
@1chish
@1chish 11 лет назад
I stand to be corrected as I have shown before but I have doubly checked RR records and all I can do is quote: " The addition of the Rolls-Royce Merlin to the P-51B/C model transformed the Mustang's performance at altitudes above 15,000 ft, giving it a performance that matched or bettered the majority of the Luftwaffe's fighters at altitude" Kinzey 1996, p. 56. The difference between B & C models was factory location and as Dallas was later on stream it is possible Packards went there.

1chich Aside from all yourBull$hit ALL merlin Mustangs use only the Packard built merlins !!!! Not one RR Built merlin went into a production Merlin Mustang, The Brits did NOT have enough for their use let alone send them to the USA !!!! All you ever see in the comments on videos like this are people arguing about Packard-made merlins (P-whatever they were called) and RR-made merlins, which is saddening. Grow up, they're the same engine, the only difference being where they were made and who made them. Just for a comparison, 1 in 3 fords sold worldwide use an engine made in Blighty. Do I see anyone arguing about that? Nope, so don't bother whining about this "Packard vs merlin" shite. Have some bloody respect for what everyone did back then.
@Purlee100
@Purlee100 6 лет назад
I am fairly sure that there was a major difference in the way they were built, the Packard having the crankcase and cylinders cast as one piece, while the Rolls engine used a crankcase with two separate cylinder blocks, never the less, as you say, they were essentially the same engine, and a jolly good one! I stand to be corrected on this.
@wilburfinnigan2142
@wilburfinnigan2142 6 месяцев назад
@@Purlee100 There was major differences in the Packard and the RR Built merlins, First RR Cast the head and cylinder block as one piece and RR had a special machine made to machine the valve sets and that machine was NOT available in the USA> So Packard cast the head seperate from the block so existing machine tools could machine the valve seats, also Packard used the Bendix Pressure carb from the start, super and the supercharger drive was different, as were the American made ancillarys, starters, generators, ignition. RR later adopted the seperate head block for faster manufacturing. Then when Packard made the later 2 stage supercharged unit Vincent of Packard used his designed 2 stage 2 speed supercharger and intercooler. Packard also made ALL part the same so parts were interchangeable and tighter tolerances. There were major differences !!! Whether you believe it or not !! !

That Mossie was built and restored at a small airfield south of Auckland, New Zealand. It's an absolute shame that she was sent abroad and then sold after the demise of the new owners business. Thankfully though, AvSpec who built her is now making a third Mossie that will hopefully stay in NZ. A fantastic piece of history.
@MarsFKA
@MarsFKA 3 года назад
All the Mosquitos made by Avspecs were for customers in the USA. So far, no one in New Zealand can afford one. The latest news is that another Mosquito has turned up in a barn at Mapua, near Nelson. The owner, John Reid, died last year and when his barn was opened up, it revealed an Aladdin's Cave of aviation treasures. He had a complete Mosquito, a P51, a famous RNZAF P40 from the Pacific War and a Harvard, as well as a lot of other stuff. The Mosquito has gone to the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre, outside Blenheim, where it will be restored to display condition. Being the New Zealand experts on Mosquitos, some of the AvSpecs guys came down to help the Omaka people dismantle and transport the aircraft. I'm going to next year's air show at Omaka and I'm hoping that the public might be able to see the Mosquito. Last year, a Hudson bomber that Mr Smith also owned was taken to Omaka, where I saw it in a hangar during the Classic Fighters Omaka 2019 air show. It now features in the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre's "Dangerous Skies" exhibition ( @t ). The P51 has gone to Ohakea, where it will be restored to flying condition by Brendon Deere. The only ex-RNZAF P51 in flying condition is owned by Kermit Weeks and it is said that there is another in storage in Britain. I don't know what plans there are for the P40 and Harvard, but, no doubt, someone has something in mind.

Britain still is a good place, get a life. Gun control is good, cameras reduce crime and immigration helps the country as it always has. I suspect political correctness just means things you don't like. Give up the nostalgia and golden age thinking!

Why all the political comments? This is all about wonderful aircraft powered by merlin music , my dad was WOP in RAF bomber command attached to a Canadian crew who were only to good to him sharing the extra supplies the Canadians had , thanks to you guys over there , Alan UK

They should have include a later model P51 which had a Merlin as well. Otherwise this was a great show of British aircraft powered by those fantastic Merlins. Love that sound

Really did not need the bagpipes as the Merlins are music enough by themselves. I'm a brit and find the sound of bagpipes is best heard from outside a soundproof bunker with the bagpipes inside it.

Well done to the announcer for realising that the sound of the Merlin is the star of the show and giving everyone a chance to hear and record. It amazes me how often these airshow announcers blather on over that spine tingling sound.

When Herman Goering asked his fighter aces what they needed to conquer the RAF in the Battle of Britain, he was told, get us Spitfires. Didn't go down well with Goering.

"In 1940 I could at least fly as far as Glasgow in most of my aircraft, but not now! It makes me furious when I see the Mosquito. I turn green and yellow with envy. The British, who can afford aluminium better than we can, knock together a beautiful wooden aircraft that every piano factory over there is building, and they give it a speed which they have now increased yet again. What do you make of that? There is nothing the British do not have. They have the geniuses and we have the nincompoops. After the war is over I'm going to buy a British radio set - then at least I'll own something that has always worked." - Herman Goering.
