I have Kayla when I was a kid. I bought her again years later since I destroyed mine in my childhood. She was and still my absolute favorite Barbie/mermaid Barbie. I think Mermaid Fantasy and Fairytopia Magical Mermaid Barbies were the last ones to have good qualities of mermaid Barbies. There few ones are good too after those Barbies like Sparkle Lights Mermaid (2011). But nowadays the new mermaid Barbies are awful, over designs tails that look like candies slapping on Barbie, not pretty face molds and bad short hair quality. They're not exotic mermaid elements/qualities for new mermaid Barbies.

I am having so many nostalgic flash backs of playing with this doll. I loved her to pieces! Literally. Her tail was falling apart by the time I was made to get rid of her.

I had the orange haired Mermaid Fantasy Kayla, I still think she is the most beautiful doll I've ever had. And I too bought her as adult, wish I had a double so I could open one. I also totally agree with you in terms of other Barbie mermaids!!

You could find a fabric body to put over the robotics, that way you could keep her on her swimming body :) this was also my fav Barbie. You could really tell Mattel was at they're best with these dolls :) these dollls are a perfect tribute to the mermaid fandom!

I loved this doll as a child as well. I got the orange hair and blue tail for my cousin, but secretly wanted her for myself. So I played with her a ton. Ugh, it was the best mermaid doll Mattel ever has
