Heather and I visit the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge in Florida and drive the Black Point Wildlife Drive on a rainy morning in January for some wildlife photography. I used the Canon R6 and the 100-500 and 800mm lenses. Heather used the Nikon Z50 and the 200-500 lens.
We had an outstanding morning of Wildlife Photography capturing many beautiful photos of birds in flight, in the water, and perched.
Roseate Spoonbill, Great Egret, Cattle Egret, Little Blue Heron, Tri-colored Heron, Snowy Egret, White Ibis, Glossy Ibis, Osprey, Blue-Winged Teal, Northern Shoveler, Wood Stork, and many more species were seen and photographed!

You guys worked very hard! In the rain! Outstanding shots! Really incredible! Thank you for your efforts that made these visible to us. If I could have bought your well deserved lunch it would have been filet mignon!

Welcome to the So Florida wading bird experience. Looks like you found most of them except for the little Blue Herons. In the Winter and Spring months 90 of 100 ducks I see are Blue Wing Teals with about 5 of 100 being Florida Mottled. The Reddish Egret shot by Heather was outstanding...beautiful bird. And the very colorful Spoonbill was a marvelous example of the Breeding Plumage of the male Roseate Spoonbill. BTW, my favorite wading bird is the Snowy Egret...just something about its grace and the pure whiteness of it's feathers combined with the black legs and golden feet. Great shots all!

We had seen little blue Heron earlier that morning at Viera Wetlands. I didn't even notice that we didn't see any on Merritt Island until you pointed it out. Would like to have seen some night heron and bittern. That's interesting that Blue Wing Teal are common in Florida in winter. Thanks for watching, Tim!

Love that place. Blackpoint Drive and Biolab road. Severa Bald Eagle nests in the area as well. Great video man. Thanks.

Thank you, Tim! We have decided not to visit Viera Wetlands next year but we are planning to come back to Merritt Island in January 2023. This time we are not going to have a lunch reservation to shorten our photography. 😂

Wow! That was epic! Y'all understated the amount of great shots you got that day. So many good ones, I don't know what to mention. You know the shot Heather got with the saturated Wood Stork and it's hand, foot, claw looking thing has really stuck in my head. Also really liked the "Reddish Egret" shot at the end, especially since I don't believe I've ever seen one before. So many great ones in this video.👍

Thank you! We had a great morning that day for sure. I think the reddish was my favorite just because it's so rare. I'm still kicking myself for not getting all the video clips off of the card before formatting. I made lots of video clips of the reddish bouncing around. They hunt in a unique way compared to other wading birds. Thank you!

Amazing video and shots Phil and Heather. Those Spoonbills looked so incredible particularly at 20:23 coming in to land. So many great shots and lucky you could stay in your car out of the rain. Looks like it was bucketing down. I’ve been to the Cape about a week before a shuttle launch in ‘92. Thanks for sharing the video 👍🙏

Thank you, Adrian! We have visited this location before without seeing any Spoonbills. July is the wrong time to go. January is much better! I did not know you had ever visited the states! That's cool! You're a world traveler! :)

150-500 vs the 800 f11 ? Thanks
@PhilThach
@PhilThach 2 года назад
100-500 is sharper, faster and has a much better minimum focus distance. The 800 f/11 is slower but has more reach and is about 1/3 of the price of the 100-500.

@@PhilThach 200-500 f4 ?
@PhilThach
@PhilThach 2 года назад
@@policeluber6720 Nikon 200 to 500 is f/5.6. You can buy a 200 to 400 F/4, but they are usually over $10,000 and they are really big and heavy. I owned a 500 mm F4 for years and while I did like it’s bright aperture it’s huge size and weight were not optimal for me.

I’ll review it if they send me one but I’m not going to buy one just to review it. We are thoroughly happy with the Nikon 200-500 and that is the lens we recommend for bird photography with the z50. Hopefully Nikon will release the Z 200-600 at some point. When and if they do we will buy that one and review it.

Both of you did a great job! My wife and I were there last week again, no rain but almost too sunny. You are so right about the shorter zoom lens being the best at times because the birds get so close to the road. I was using a 500 PF on a D500 and got some good shots but the lens was just too much most of the time. I did get a distant eagle on the fly but only close enough to identify it. There were over a hundred ducks in one flock on the wing. It is great you had such a wonderful experience. The Z50 shots were amazing. Thank you for sharing.
