I was driving in Berkeley California the first time I heard this song. I didn’t know who this badass was, so I went straight to Tower Records to find out. Bought the cassette, popped it in my player, and hit the road again, bumping. Saw her in concert in San Francisco not long after. Been a fan ever since ❤
Is that really Screaming Headless Torsos? Holy shit I'm embarrassed, I've listened to them so much but I've never seen what they look like, thanks for educating me. You do have to admit audio is enough to feel what they are getting across
She gave him that look because he overshot his solo and she wanted him to stop, @3:34 she gave him the signal to end the solo and fall back in to the "1" (which he didn't), then after she gave him the signal she turned to the drummer to signal to do the drummers build up signal to the other musicians to go back to the "1", if you listen everyone went back to the "1" except the guitarist.
@@TheFriendlyPsychopath interesting insight, but MeShell would often improvise on the spot, as usual i was winding my solo down and she looked at me and cued to keep on going, then cued the band to stop but not all of them caught the cue....offstage it was a tumultuous time and unfortunately that sometimes spilled over into the performances.....
Yeah, that signal was to extend the solo, and I’m pretty sure the look she gave Fuze at the end was a ‘Damn, man, that was 🔥’. Stunning performance by all involved. 👏
@@TheFriendlyPsychopath Oh, I’m not disputing that - just saying that the signal she gives to the guitarist is a ‘keep going’ signal, and the look she gives him afterwards is one of respect for a solo well played. I can see clearly that she signals the band right after asking Fuze to continue, and some of them get it, some don’t. Not a problem - it sounded great.
The 90s was the last experimental era of popular music. We may never experience such a level of explosive creativity again. Very sad, the music of today is in comparison.
Plenty of great music out there today. Dumpstaphunk, Tedeschi Trucks band, Lizzo, Billy Strings, Dragonsmoke, Thundercat, Mononeon, Ghost Note, and much more.
The Bass and The Vocal !!! Oh god, Awesome !!!! So groovy !! I'm a huge fan since 1994 :-) !! She inspired me for all this years !!! Big thanks to you for sharing this !! Stay tuned !
Lord have mercy. I can still listen to this album and watch this and never get tired of it! So thankful I got to see her a few times back in the day. Can't wait to hear the new covers album she's about to drop!!
Comin back to this video for the 5th time in a month. Just thought I'd add..damn..she's playin 1 night at Le poisson Rouge here in NY and fug..that shit sold out so quick. Really hoping she's back around this summer at one of the many free outdoor shows all around Brooklyn and in the city. Saw her at summerstage 2 summer's ago..or was it last summer..hmm..anyone know? That was way mellower than this funkified frenzy.. but really wanna hear and see the new covers album..while prayin she throws in some of her old school stuff like this tune.
" Only Mastering by me !" We love your mastering, SKALP -- and we thank you for putting this clip of the concert up so we would appreciate it even though we didn't get to be there :-)
Thank you sooooo much for putting this live performance of Me'shell on RU-vid!! I wish I could play bass like Meshell and Keni Burke (formerly of the 5 Stairsteps)!!! I would have loved to hear her and Jimi Hendrix play together. Her Guitarist ain't no joke either!!! I had to get up and dance!!!
This must have been a hell of a concert. So f..... great, all of them, its not fair just to mention the drummer and lead guitar, but here i do. And i love how they play together, giving space, jamming...just great.
Was that in Montreux/Switzerland? That‘s where I heard Meshell for the first time! I was completely blown away by the sheer energy, funki- and grooviness. We had such a good time, that gig has been my favorite ever since then! Now I have all her CDs and she‘s still one of my favorite musicians, pure talent and skill, love her 👍👍👍
I don't know if this was in Montreux. I saw her at North Sea Jazz in the Netherlands 1995 and this Concert blew me away, too. The felt the same as you... funky, groovy and energy...
Saw her live at the Roxy Atlanta in ~’94.. Thank you for sharing this video.. one of the best live gigs I’ve ever seen.. and I grew up in NOLA.. Tips, Jimmy’s, Maple Leaf, Donna’s.. IYKYK..
What a band! Meshell Ndegeocello - vocals/bass Federico Gonzalez Peña - keyboards David Fiuczynski - guitar (what a solo!!!) Wah Wah Watson - guitar Yossi Fine - bass Jojo Mayer - drums Daniel Sadownick - percussion Not sure who the BVs are unfortunately
He's such a badass drummer!! Got to see him many times back in the day when he was playing sick live Drum and bass in tiny clubs all around the east village and lower east side here in NY.
This band were the best thing at Glastonbury that year. I posted 2 VHS vids up here from her performance, the only highlights the BBC showed. This is so rare, did you get a whole gig on VHS? Never thought I'd see this stuff up here, amazing.
I knew she would take flight the first time I saw her play at the Panorama Room with a band called Prophesy. They opened up for Lil Benny and The Masters and they funked up the theme from Beverly Hills Cop go-go style. CRANKIN!!
Can't believe it's him! Obviously she plays with the best, given her stature as a writer, bassist and performer. I remember Josh Redman played on Peace Beyond Passion. And look who's on drums: Jojo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this is the sound im looking for all these years lost since the 90s. all music sucks except this style. its the best. fact. then it went south with auto-tuners. this would be my favorite band if they still played this stuff.
