Chapter 5 of the package is related to this tutorial.
Don’t hesitate to ask any questions you might have about the explanations presented in this video using the comments below. We try to answer all questions regarding the video details in the comments below.
In biomechanical engineering, the Mimics and 3-matic software are used to create geometry and CAD file from the MRI or radiology pictures of bones and soft tissues. The generated STEP format of the geometry can be imported to the Abaqus for performing structural analysis.
Most of the time, the imported geometries are not simple and cannot be meshed easily. Actually there will be a lot of extra features in these geometries that can cause problems in generating an optimum mesh with a minimum number of elements and high quality elements.
In the first part of this tutorial, we will focus on how to remove these extra features from a complex bone imported into the Abaqus mesh module and remove some of its extra features. After this procedure, the part/geometry is ready to be meshed.
table of content:
- Importing CAD file into Abaqus part module
- Flow chart of meshing complex 3D solids including biomechanical parts in Abaqus
- Examples of extra features that must be removed
- How to select features for defeaturing
- Examples of extra features that must be kept
- General procedure of defeaturing
- Virtual topology tools
- Automatic virtual topology creation
- Defeaturing by using automatic tools
- Defeaturing by using manual tools
- What will be explained in the second part of this tutorial

Can we create a crack in this model?

Hi. If you are talking about the XFEM crack, yes I can create it in the bone.

Hi, thanks for your videos. I have a question for the simulation of a complex model in Abaqus: how can I reach an optimized meshing in the Abaqus? before inputting a CAD model, is it needed to simplify that or it would be possible to reach to optimized model in Abaqus? if there are warning highlighted in the verification of meshing, it would cause wrong results or we can ignore the existence of warnings somehow. Thanks a lot.

Hi. You are welcome. Actually the answer of your question is highly dependent on the geometry itself. for example, in an industrial project, we want to find the stress concentration factor around a hole and also there are other holes in large distances away from the mentioned hole. So we can remove those holes to decrease the complexity and reach an optimum mesh. But this is not a general procedure. About the highlighted elements in the verification checks, according to my experience, most of the time they are not important and don't decrease the accuracy. But if that part undergoes large plastic strains or large deformations, those low quality elements can make a lot of numerical issues. So I suggest you to ask us for an online consultancy session via email to talk about your model. Hence we can give you the exact answer of your questions according to your model.

what will happen if we use large values for delete extra features?
@FemexIran
@FemexIran 2 года назад
hi. if you use large values in automatic tool of defeaturing, extra features will be removed that leads to : 1) the mathematical definition of the geometry will have problem that leads to some abnormal issues in generating mesh on the geometry. 2) you will have less control on the element size and mash pattern in the geometry.
