no self-celebration. Just a realistic and sincere documentary about life on tour. With its problems, its stressing moments. Great, just great attitude. Thanks to Meshuggah
India has a pretty decent size metal community. They are dedicated and loyal to whatever metal bands theyre into. I don't understand why ppl are always shocked or surprised that there are metal heads in india. A lot of poverty-stricken countries usually have a solid metal or music scene in general because it is a positive outlet.
You can recall any story of any metal band in the 80's and the beginning of the 90's and some of the most wild gigs they ever had were in South America.
@@TheSadistNat1onI know from experience that it can be extremely tough even in your twenties. If you don't get enough sleep for a long period of time, your body will eventually stop obeying when you're on stage.
Correction: this is what the 5 star treatment looks like in touring. Still, during these times, I wish I was out in the van again goofing off and playing again.
Yup. This is what touring is like. Communicating in second or third languages about cables, waiting around, airports, good show, waiting around, bad show, exhausted, energised, waiting around, more airports.
I guess it’s all because they were really exhausted No proper sleep, uncomfortable environment, poor sound equipment etc. It seems to me that the only bright thing for them was their fans,so much love and appreciation for band😩
It might not have been a pleasing experience for the band and its crew, but being an Indian I must say that we keep a special alter for metal music and we worship our Gods with all we've got! Long live 'metal' Long live 'Meshuggah' 🤘🤘
I don’t think the fact that it’s India had anything to do with it being an unpleasant experience. If anything, as a Westerner it would be more enjoyable to me not being around the usual random American/European city, if I’m gonna sleep two hours per night anyway I might as well do it in a completely different environment for a change. Cheers from Italy!
Metal , always will be the blue collar side of the industry . Some of the hardest working musicians an often the least paid compared to pop trash ! Love to catch these guys in NC !
Also, I love how at 20:21 during their sound check, they've played Rational Gaze so many times, they can smoke a cigarette, look uninterested, pay attention to everything else and play it perfectly. Meanwhile, the rest of us are over here like THAT SYNCOPATION AND TIMING, WTF. Every time.
India is a great country and it fills me with joy to see the crowds so ecstatic about seeing Meshuggah. In the West we take the endless rotation of touring bands for granted and would rarely get anywhere near as excited as the Indian crowds..
Man the freaking sound check for Rational Gaze is KILLING at 20:50 on. The guitars sound awesome (you can hear the bass), you can hear the whole band sound, and the Jens starts with his stuff.... I can't get enough of these guys...AND they have had no sleep at that point. Real.
Makes me proud to see brown metalheads. I thought I was the only one. Thanks Meshuggah. This documentary feels like a comedy in a sort of a Spinal Tap way.
I am not from India or of Indian descent but I am very disappointed in the ignorance found within the comments. Just because a culture is foreign to you and you don't understand it does not mean they are not every bit as valid and human as the rest of us. India's problem is the population density is insane...too many people in not that large of an area(populated areas.) This is an ancient people that deserve respect. Their skin tone does not mean they are dirty or that they stink. Shame of you if you disrespected these people. We are all humans and more specifically we are all part of the brotherhood of metal!!
Good comment. India is still very much a developing country with lots of challenges to overcome. In our lifetimes, we will see a much more modern India emerge. This should shut up most of the haters...
As a Swede watching this I get why some people view this as boring or depressing but: Swedes generally enter "work mode" during stuff like this, they care more about getting it done efficiently than anything and with lack of sleep, a lot of coffee there is a tendency to enter no-nonsense lowkey energy-saving mode. Which I guess most people do, some just treat it differently. And there's plenty of bad Swedish puns everywhere. Example "jet lite" they turn into Swedish for "Jättelite" which means "very little". But they definitely look like I do during nightshift.
Meshuggah seem like a bunch of really even tempered and nice guys. This is a good thing, but it also makes it hard to create a really thrilling documentary about them.
I know it's a low-key documentary, but I can't help imagine the intensity to play there, and how beautifully music brings humans together. Those dudes produced a very original, inherent music in a cave in the north, and here they are exulting with very different people from a totally different world. Yet feeling the same beat, moving the same air together, pretty cool! thanks guys
If you know anything about Indian music and their use of odd time signatures/scales/patterns in their traditional music. You can understand why they're so pumped to see them.
In this day and age, showing that you're not a bigot is unfortunately never a yawner. People as it happens, need to be informed that there is no difference between me and you. It's strange, but it seems to be were we're at. For me, as a swede, I'm just super excited that people from where ever can relate to Meshuggah.
I must say thay the tour was impeccable as it showed all the struggles from lost baggage to sleep dementia. And India has a decent metal fanbase I must say.
I'm proud of the band n the fans of india 🤘🏻🤘🏻if u watch this with emotion it is not boring at all, some of u guys don't even watch the whole video n writing negative comments
I would say their tour was quite badly planned there.. up crazy early every morning... no time to look around.... which subsequently makes for tired and easily annoyed musicians...
That's the real touring-life of a professional band, Just Boring, Exhuasting and Stressing. But when the gig started and met all those lovely people, makes it all worth the trip. I remember my touring days with band, I always said "the best thing of touring, is we can see the sunrise every fucking day..."
9:05 The guitar parts when they're driving sound like Holdsworth, a lot. I like this because it shows us the reality of touring, it's not epic fun for the band or the crew, but they do it for the fans.
Everything about fredrik is so Alan, the special defects album is like full of it. Melody wise and solo wise. Btw, fredricks dad used to play for Alan or something.. look it up
Well the reason why Meshuggah are tired and exhausted is because they have to do LOTs of touring because that's they're only choice to make for a living...Why?? WE FUCKING DOWNLOAD THEY'RE ALBUMS INSTEAD OF BUYING THE CD...I'm not blaming you guys I'm also blaming myself..not only Meshuggah had to do this it's EVERY FUCKING BAND!!
that's true- but not strictly. i made a serious push with a serious band in memphis and got the TINIEST glimpse inside the beast that is the industry. meshuggah? busting their asses for the last 20+ years to feed their families. c.e.os of sony, bmg, warner etc? not worrying about a goddamned thing financially. it's kind of how i feel about tipping at restaurants. if your service was professional and a nice experience then i will gladly go above and beyond to show my gratitude. but for me to feel obligated to fill the gap in someone's wages BECAUSE THEIR EMPLOYER FUCKS THEM EVERYDAY... yeah that's not doing much for me
I've actually bought all their albums, DVDs, seen them live multiple times, have Meshuggah clothing, posters... you name it. If you like the band, support them. If you can't afford to at the time, go ahead and download the album... but don't forget to show them your support later on as well.
A little over a year ago I decided to buy all my music because I felt like an ass stealing from all of these amazing artists. They're out there busting their asses writing songs that make us feel a little better when we're down, or simply put a smile on our face when we hear that epic riff they wrote or that cool drum fill their drummer does. I know it's not much in the grand scheme of things, but it makes me feel better knowing that in some small way I'm making THEIR lives a little bit easier, just as they did for me
Thomas Haake had surgery from a herniated disk and it causes for him to loose control of his right foot... that's what he was referencing when he talks about his foot cramping up in case anyone is wondering.
02:03 ... I can listen to it 'til I die. I think this particular DVD differs from many videos that we've seen through the years from different bands... It really shows their frustration among gigs, the travelling, the delays, the little sleep time, although the producers do their best. Besides, they are quite calm throughout the video. It's different, but what do you expect? It's Meshuggah. IMHO I think that they are at the pinnacle of their career, but that does not mean that they will not have times like these while touring. Pause at 22:26.
Thanks for the upload, even though the guys seemed to be really tired all the time and it made the interviews quite boring, but a great inside look of metal concerts in India.
Meshuggah talking about lack of sleep, Sum, Meshuggah talking about lack of sleep, Sum, 10 seconds snippet of show, Meshuggah talking about lack of sleep, Sum
I watched the "movie" from the Chaosphere sessions, and this one back to back, and I have to say that Jens is a different person, man. Although, I get that when on camera, he was incredibly fucking tired most of the times.
You are welcome. Kind regards from 🇸🇪 Music is universal. Quality is always appreciated by those who are interested regardless of genre/style. Stuff like this makes me proud to be Swedish.
it doesnt. the buzz given by that hour-ish is nice, but there is a lot of flipsides to that. worst, by far, is the leg of the tour where there are barely any offdays. everyone wants to offer you drinks and shit, and they´re going to be annoyed if you excuse yourself. which basically means departure 05 am, completely wasted - which means hangover to the next SC. and then everyone wonders if you´ve lost the edge. no, you had to be courteous and now it has a price, lmao you kinda have to pass the autograph phase every now and then, or you are so fucking screwed. pregig meet and greet works so much better.
it's sad to see the arrangements that are very poor for any international band where on the other hand crappy Indian artists like Honey Singh gets better arrangements than this, this is not even 10% of what can be maid available.
How the hell can that singer pull it off?? My throat is sore just watching this video...and how long are their shows?? Dude must keep lozenges in his pockets 24/7.
christian davis there is a technique to it. Haha. It took me 5 years to figure it out. It's really quite simple. Like whispering really really loud. ;)
ZakkiLowe coincidentally a couple of their early stage demo lyrics have been recorded that way, by whispering :P ..but you probably know that since you're here haha
hahaha....poor tomas....I can't imagine the nightmare of having to play bleed every night....THEN get through your set...he's got that "get me out of this" look on his face
venomau5speedz I know huh...it’s weird but true. I always think of destroy erase, chaos and contradictions when it comes to these guys but it’s hard to ignore the fact that bleed put them in a much wider spotlight
To THE THING FROM THE ARENA: Its because they don't have enough money to fly half way round the world, you think that's bad, see how much Meshuggah tickets costs. You'd be lucky to get them if there not sold out already. Also see how long itll take to go from wherever you are in America to India. AIRFARE+METAL TIX= OO BOY, A TON. So good luck getting airfare tix and meshuggah tix.
09:29 "I took the opportunity to first slam my elbow into one of them, then in the face with my fist... Clumsy. It actually feels good now afterwards, that I got it done. Hahahahaha" - a god amongst men =)
touring has always been like this. lack of sleep, hangover(if you drink), stress, unknown factors up the wazoo (including the catering) and drunken people (if its not you). then, you walk to the stage, hear people go "YEAHHH!" and you remember why you do what you do and why it is worth it. good days are lovely, bad days are pure murder.
heh. drinking. you begin your tour thinking that you're the professional musician and will just blitz through. safe, sane and sober. reality? first major gig you do problably has a lot of people (usually local "scene" people), who want to offer you a drink just because you were awesome. do you say no? keep in mind that they are drunk aswell.
+franxxxalooo haha, there are worst places than this where one has to perform, what did you think it's just like the movies you get the best things and do whatever you want.
Metal , always will be the blue collar side of the industry . Some of the hardest working musicians an often the least paid compared to pop trash ! Love to catch these guys in NC ! Also for all the people trash talking India’s metal heads , WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU ! Have you forgotten the laws of our family ? Metal excepts all no matter what culture ! We are all FAMILY PERIOD !
