Meshuggah interview - Thor look-alike talking about eight-string guitars and apologizing djent 

This is what it looks like when intelligent people make music and when intelligent interviewers get to ask questions. Well done on all fronts.

"We're not for the casual listeners going to the gym, drinking their smoothies, at five in the morning going in to crunch numbers at a bank." Me: going in to work at 5 am to crunch numbers, drinking a smoothie, listening to Meshuggah

The only issue I have is that Meshuggah is most certainly a band you go to the gym to. I love doing cardio to polyrhythms.

Meshuggah is the ONLY thing I listen to when I go to the gym. Gives me +10 str, +10 con and +20 char.

Can I just say that’s exactly how I listen to Meshuggah? Drinking coffee, working out, nice joy rides along the beach, peaceful walks on nice days. Their stuff is the best kind of meditation

I have to say - I wake up at 4:30 AM to go to the gym multiple times per week listening to Meshuggah, & I work in financial services crunching numbers to Meshuggah. I also enjoy the occasional smoothie :P I do connect with their music on a different level than a casual listener bc I can hum along after learning the drums/music

This is amazing. I just saw Meshuggah in Bethlehem, PA in December 2023 and I never thought I'd get a chance to see them live... For me listening to Meshuggah is like staring into the abyss and loving it. I love their unique fingerprint. Hearing Marten speak on it is really fun and inspiring. Cements my love even deeper.

I remember being in 7th grade in 97 and ordering Contradictions Collapse. Started there and never looked back. Favorite band to this day. Great interview.

You guys are musical Gods...scientists who split atoms of time in precise manner and leave 64 yr olds like me in complete awe. Been following you guys since the mid-90`s & you improve like fine wine.

The creative evernewing spark is the infinite source fountain of endless music to be born, just like life each the same but infinitely different. I dropped all covers crap many years ago and started playing PURELY in the pursuit of chasing that creative cutting edge of only playing something we had never jammed before - and we recorded it on-the-fly to capture the magic as it happened. I honestly thought Periphery's Misha Monsoor created the term "djent." That said, yes, I accept Meshuggah as being called "math metal," not "mathcore" (math rock being prog+jazz); and yes, I love djent. Oversaturated online, sure, but still fun to listent to those 8-string notes. Brings some groove and funk to the insane madness.

Worth noting, Meshuggah have definitely been listened to by me at the gym whilst drinking an Americano at 5 am. Literally the only thing that gets me out of bed sometimes.

here in florida ….I wake up and listen to yall with coffee and I hum and whistle meshuggah while working. and people will ask what the hell are you tying to play. they never pick the right band. but my wife and kids know

This was another enjoyable interview. It flows similarly to a conversation, various subjects come up and with ease. With the 8 strings I dunno, I've only tried them in store but like he said, 6 to 7 isn't much change but 8 it's a big change. Although it didn't appeal to me, nonetheless there's a learning curve and different approach which I can respect. I also assumed "djent" was just some weird internet/youtube joke or meme that caught on with skateboarding kids into metalcore which is basically Blink182 with 7/8 string dbl bass, growl-shouting.

The whole "gym, crunch numbers, smoothy" comment I think applies more to Marten not thinking yuppies like their music but actually a lot of yuppies do like Meshuggah, which isn't a bad thing but I am glad Meshuggah isn't going out of their way to make yuppie music.
