Here is a short video from the Royal International Air Tattoo 2023 showing a UK first - the first time the legendary Messerschmitt Me262 jet fighter has ever displayed in the UK.
Although this is a new build project (none of the originals are in flying condition), it is beautifully presented, and great to see here.
The Me262 was the world's first operational jet fighter, entering service in the second world war, and was much faster than any of the propellor driven fighters, and showed the way things would be from then on . . .

It is using modern engines as the originals are too unreliable - I don't think anybody knows how noisy the original engines would be yet.

Amazing fact, the last time one of these was over UK skies was in 1945...

Unfortunately, by the time the 262 became operational in August 44 they had the range to intercept Allied aircraft only over Germany. They then switched role to air-to-ground and, being now well after D-Day their targets were again all on the European mainland. No Me262 ever crossed The Channel on a combat mission, although a few were brought back to the UK for evaluation by the RAF in 1945-46.

@@timgosling6189 I'd guess Tony is referring to an RAF test flight?

@@lqr824 I'm thinking the RAF was testing Me-262s until 1946-1947. I was reading a list of captured Me-262s and their fate. A few are "fate unknown."

Shouldn't be given the time of day in my opinion. Alot of our old soldiers would be turning in their graves.
