There are kind of righty and lefty foot. If there are no obstacles changing the way you walk you will always prefer to put your left or your right foot forward. If you stand normal and close your eyes then lean forward so your just about to fall your instincts will be to step forward this also proves 'footedness' this can inform how you stand when on a surfboard. There is also left or right bias in Football. Depending on which foot you prefer to kick with.

FYI there is a difference with left foot dominant runners and right. It determines which foot you start forward , is even more important during short sprints when you use starting blocks.

To answer the question, the "right-handed square dance thingy" is an Allemande Thar (sometimes called a Thar Star), and the left-handed version is a Wrong Way Thar (Star). The styling where everyone grips the forearm of the person in front of them so that they are less likely to fall over while backing up is called a "pack-saddle star" according to my reference, but I wouldn't expect most square dancers to recognize that term.

It's details like that which often come in "handy" later... oh Vihart your hand puns are glorious.

I feel like the engineer verstion of chirality is handedness. Before Vihart i never heard of chirality but we talked about handedness all the time, like pointing vecoctors / right hand rule

How is a butterfly achiral? If you put a line through the middle, it cannot be super-imposed therefore it should be chiral.

One thing I've thought is interesting about chirality is if an object is chiral in 2 dimensions, you can turn it into it's mirror image by rotating it in the third dimension. Likewise, you can turn a 3D object like a left hand into a mirror image, like a right hand, by rotating it in the 4th dimension. I wonder if this trend is consistent through all higher dimensions.

the square dance thingy is also in contra dancing and is called a [right or left] hand star

Handed square thinggy is called square 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 and goes on infinitely. if you don't say 1 or any others its automatically 4. (Square dancing)

Metachirality is when a thing is chiral and also it's mirror image is symmetric in a different way from the original (according to Wikipedia). Also the definition of 'different way' is complicated.

Could there be a first foot if you started with a step and then went infinitely from there. So something with a start but no end.. Would that still be infinite or is there a cool word for this?

On glide symmetry: the footsteps would have to be infinite on the plane, but if they were on a closed surface like a torus or a Mobius strip they'd be glide-symmetric even with a finite walk, right? (Or to put it another way--the finite walk and the infinite walk become indistinguishable? ...modulo the size of your loop?)

There actually are righty and lefty runners! It presents itself when you have to run and then jump. Since there are righty and lefty jumpers then it influences which foot you start running with. Also think of the blocks that sprinters use at the start of the race. I hope this excites you as much as it did me.
