Some interesting background on this song...The guitar he is playing here is named "Lenny" after his wife Lenora. He saw this guitar in a pawn shop and couldn't afford it at the time. I believe it was $350. His wife got their friends to chip in together and she presented him with this guitar as a surprise for his birthday. He was so overcome that he sat at the foot of their bed and composed this song all night to express his love and gratitude for her. He played it for her the next morning. Notice how he is seated here just as he was when he composed it. His eyes are closed the entire song like he is back in that moment. After the song is finished he opens his eyes and it's almost like he forgot the crowd was even there. Can you imagine someone expressing their love for you like this??? Magnificent.

Regarding the cigarette...I once saw someone post this: "You may be cool, but you'll never be Stevie Ray Vaughan smoking a cigarette playing Lenny cool."

That puff of smoke at 5:11 with the playing gives me chills every time i see it 😂

For me listing to Steve Ray VAUGHN feels like a soul to soul connection through his guitar.

You said enough when you said "unparalleled". That is perfectly put. I don't know what makes someone the greatest guitarist of all time, but I know that for me, there is nobody else that comes close to Stevie.

For me when watching videos of Stevie play, from the first note it feels like he has gone otherworldly, him and his guitar. His genius musicality takes you along on the journey but he's ever conscious that he is playing for an audience ... kind of like being on two separate but conjoined planes. Maybe this makes sense only to me or it makes no sense at all but I feel such euphoric emotions. SRV, the greatest musical master I had the honor and pleasure to see shortly before his demise, August 27, 1990 and each year after will forever be one the most emotionally draining days second only to the death of my son. Rest in peace always.

This performance was the first time I had laid ears or eyes on SRV, years ago. It was to this day, the only REAL "spiritual experience" I have ever received. It really fucked with my emotions afterwards. The camera work here really adds to that. He truly ascends somewhere while playing this song. An absolute masterpiece of a song and performance.

Like others have said - 'Texas Flood' from this concert - this is a quote I found online from Eric Clapton on Stevie Ray - Eric Clapton I don't think anyone has commanded my respect more, to this day. The first time I heard Stevie Ray, I thought, "Whoever this is, he is going to shake the world." I was in my car and I remember thinking, I have to find out, before the day is over, who that guitar player is. That doesn't happen to me very often, that I get that way about listening to music. I mean, about three or four times in my life I've felt that way, in a car, listening to the radio, where I've stopped the car, pulled over, listened, and thought, I've got to find out before the end of the day, not, you know, sooner or later, but I have to know NOW who that is. ...and I remember being fascinated by the fact that he never, ever seemed to be...lost in any way...It was as though he never took a breather...or took a pause to think where he was gonna go next, it just flowed out of him. It's going to be a long time before anyone that brilliant will come along again. I didn't get to see or hear Stevie play near often enough, but every time I did I got chills and knew I was in the presence of greatness. He seemed to be an open channel and music just flowed through him. It never seemed to dry up. I have to tell this story: We played on the same bill on his last two gigs. On the first night, I watched his set for about half an hour and then I had to leave because I couldn't handle it!. I knew enough to know that his playing was just going to get better and better. His set had started, he was like two or three songs in, and I suddenly got this flash that I'd experienced before so many times whenever I'd seen him play, which was that he was like a channel. One of the purest channels I've ever seen, where everything he sang and played flowed straight down from heaven. Almost like one of those mystic Sufi guys with one finger pointing up and one finger down. That's what it was like to listen to. And I had to leave just to preserve some kind of sanity or confidence in myself.

Albert King was Stevie's legal godfather, he loved him deeply. He would say"only one white boy got a black daddy ". There will never,ever be a guitar slinger, not player, slinger like srv. His playing, his feel, the way he attacked that guitar, like throw it on the bed and fucks it, then tenderly makes love with it. Brings tears to my eyes every time I hear him and double trouble.

His wife's name was Lenora, Lenny for short. Unfortunately they got divorced. Sounds very Hendrix-esque; love this song! Stevie played with such incredible feeling; David Gilmour also does, but in a different way. I am the same age as SRV and a huge fan, so it hit me hard when he died. Such a huge loss for the world when we lost Stevie. Sounded great, btw!

Lenny and Rivera Paradise are too be played at my funeral. They are my two favorite SRV songs.

I think many get it wrong, when saying SRV was a blues player, and leave it at that. I've always thought of him as a JAZZ musician! The main reason being, go and listen to other versions of any of his tunes, at a different show, you HEAR the differences! One fine example is this tune "Lenny" It is posted by srvguitarlegend and the title of his clip is this.........Stevie Ray Vaughan - Playing Lenny for the Last Time! .......... Quite a few parts are so different from this version. It happens every time i check out SRV live. A JAZZ musician does this every night. There is one guy, that also does this unique solo's being different every night, and that would be Derek Trucks.!! A great example is by listening to different shows of their tune called "Midnight in Harlem" To this day, i've listened to at least 100 versions, and damn if the guy doesn't surprise me every time! SRV was the same way.

He wrote this for second wife Lenora(#1 First Wife was the name of his beat up Strat). Story is she got it out of hock for him and he sat down on the end of their bed and composed this. They divorced and he had a last time he played Lenny. A genius.

His brother Jimmie and the rest of the musicians he played with the night he died did a tribute show and I can't remember who said that Stevie was an open channel and the music just flowed through him

Stevie was so one with his ax that it was an extension of his body. His guitar was an appendage equal to one of his arms. He didn’t ever have to think about where the string he was plucking was or where his fingers were on the fret board. He channeled music strait through his soul.

'The Mozart of our time'..... excellent comment. Watching SRV is probably exactly what it would have been like watching Mozart doing a solo performance on the piano, at any point in his life.

I love your reaction to this. He did play from his soul. Lenny (Lenore) was his wife. They divorced/separated around the time of his sobriety. Loved her dearly, which is clear when you hear this song, but their relationship was a destructive one. Stevie met and fell in love with Janna Lapidus shortly before he hit his rock bottom. It was Janna and his Mama that he asked for when he was in bad shape and ready to get right. He and Janna were together for his sober years, sadly only four. They were engaged at the time of his death. He told me it was his first relationship clean and sober, and it was very different. He said he really had to learn how to be in a healthy relationship. Anyway, keep exploring Stevie’s music! How about, “Mary Had a Little Lamb” from Austin 1989. You’ll love it!

Was lucky enough to know about SRV from the start in 83-4. Knew somebody who experienced the Austin music scene before fame hit. Thanks for helping me, a non musician, find the technical words to describe what emotionally hooked me into SRV & other artist you react to. There's an arc in his slow blues. Lenny was followed by Riveria Paradise.

Love the channel. SRV was a huge inspiration to me and I can only hope to be as good as he was for just a few seconds at a time. With that said I would like to see you react to some music I have gotten into over the past few years. One in particular is JJ Grey and Mofro. The songs he and his band do are great. He is a songwriter and very talented on many instruments guitar drums and harmonica as well. His style is rooted in blues but has some influence from southern rock, but his voice has so much soul and tone it can bring out the emotion of the lyrics to a different level. Thanks for the considerate reviews I have been bing watching your channel for a while and like the content. Keep on keeping on. Some others in the same vein are North Mississippi Allstars. The lead singer and guitarist played for the Black Crowes for a while. Another is Marc Broussard his album SOS 2 is full of awesome covers of soul classics. Also all of these guy’s come together and play each other’s songs on the same stage from time to time. They are just some great musicians and sound great together.

Yes, his trills, like everything else he does have the ebb and flow of his soul! That's why, even though he may overuse them in certain songs, they're not just gimmicky, if that makes any sense! They add to rather than just being useless filler!
