Great videos lately. I'm a fellow NSS member from out west. Although currently in Canada. I received my first metal detector long ago when I was in 9th grade. The girl who sat next to me in computer class that year made fun of me for how excited I was about it. She's been my wife for 13 years now, she still hasn't figured out the metal detector :)

Love this video. I dug in VA. for 12 years. Half the coins I found in Confederate camps were defaced. Everything from an "X" carved on both sides of the coin, to an elaborate "CSA" with the soldier's name, unit and date carved on the obverse. Really interesting relics with a personal touch.

Those dimples in the brass thimble are there to help you pushing the needle through the cloth. If you try that without the thimble you simply push the side of the needle with the hole in it through your skin. Another great video - ATB Marc - Belgium

Nice video! My favorite of your finds is the thimble, makes me think of how many hours it spent on the finger tip of some woman, making and mending clothing. I come from a family of sewers so thimbles speak to me. Thanks for rescuing it from the depths!

Back in those days they wouldn't normally just burn wood with the nails in them. They couldn't just walk to the hardware store and pick up a box of em'. They would try to salvage every nail. So when you find burned nails you gotta assume something happened there. Which is a good thing for hunting, downside is you're going to be hitting alot of nails.

Hey, Chiggy ! I've wanted a metal detector forever and I finally convinced myself that it's ok to go without groceries this month. LOL just joking ...kinda. I ordered the Garrett Ace 400. I feel like a kid again waiting for Santa Claus to come. LOL. I live in SW PA and I find relics in my mom's yard every time I look down. I love it. I just go out in the dirt, kick it around and dig a little. I've found old military buttons, pottery shards, bottles ........all kinds of treasures. From what my stepdad tells me there was an old shed that burned down in that spot and a small dump. But I have acres of old homestead to use my detector on! The coolest thing found was a very old pair of binoculars! They say army long range as well as Champiere Paris , that is exactly how it is spelled on them. Do you know anything about them? I have no clue as to why they were in the woods. I've been binge watching your videos and learning a lot. Thanks for all the great videos. Happy hunting, Michele

The handle on the iron may not be broken. It was made to come off and be switched onto another iron that was waiting to be used. A house wife might have 2-3 of them. As she picked up one iron with the handle, the others would be on the stove or near a fire heating up. She would then sprinkle the clothing with some water and iron the fabric. As the iron naturally cooled down and become ineffective, she would place it back on the stove, or by the fire, detach the handle and pick up the next iron with it and get back to ironing the clothes. She would be constantly switching each iron until her chore was done. I tried to find a video on this, but was unsuccessful.

I have several old irons like that but mine each have there own handle that is permanently attached. They were in my family way back, over 100 yrs ago in Vermont. I use them as door stops, keeps the door open to a room and won't allow a draft to shut the door. That was an interesting video.

I read somewhere years ago that people would sometimes burn their house down to get their nails back. The nails were hand made laboriously one at a time. The folks were moving on and the house they were leaving wasn't much and it's not like they would be listed on the housing market. Late 1600's to 1700's.
