Metal Detecting And Exploring A Freedman's Home

Please join us as we explore and metal detect this old house that was part of a small community that sprang up immediately after the American Civil War by freed families. It was a very interesting exploration and investigation. Although we did not find many items that would date to that period, we do find several old coins and some other interesting artifacts.

I kinda want to privately commission a set of plaques for this place. One for the house, the others for the cemetery. Would ensure this place’s history would never be forgotten. Love these civil war-era and post-war detects, Chigg!

At the 18:44 mark the "rivet" you pulled up looks like a brass saw nut. If one end is domed and has a slot in it, that's what you got. That type of saw nut was widely used by saw makers like Disston and Simmonds in the early 1920s all the way up to the 1970s. Around near the 70s they were chromed instead of brass

My uncle filled up old wells with old antiques and things he called junk at his homestead in Gallingertown in Ingleside Ontario Canada. He sold his farm ( Grandpa Gallingers)in 1976 for $45,000 and got married at his age of 60...he died a year later before exmas. He bought a house in Cornwall Ontario Canada ...still there too. Anyway just filling holes up with junk was a normal

Doug Alexander , if they laid on the land like other relics ( spoons ,buttons and coins ) they could most likely be found by digging a pit ,but not metal detecting as they were made of materials other than metals . It would be like finding pottery shards would be my guess . Plus Everyone smoked corn cob pipes here , didn’t they ? Lol

Couple of years back Bunch of us went camping, and one of the girls asked "why would there be an outhouse out here?" We all looked at each other and laughed. Then she asks "and why the fu*k is it out of order" to which I reply, "shitters full" she asks "why dont they get someone to fix it?" I say "its a literal hole in the ground that you are shitting in pissing in, if its full, they need to move the outhouse and dig another hole" she wanted to leave immediately.

Chigg, Coming from a long line of farmers, I have to disagree with you on the honey hole. Before commercial fertilizer, or before it was affordable, farmers used dried manure from chickens, cattle, horses, or some other animal. In living and working in the third world (pc - developing countries) I found that many farmers use human excrement, or piped from a sewer line. The caused the fruits and vegetables needing to be cleansed with bleach or other chemicals to reduce the risk of getting parasites, which would make you very sick. This still goes on in many countries.

The outhouse thing is wrong. They didn't have rows of outhouses. They just dug another hole and lifted the old outhouse up and moved it over to the new hole and used the dirt from that new hole to fill the old hole. I remember that from my youth. Four or five uncles, sons and cousins had no trouble helping with it. On top of that, I distinctly remember accidently dropping things down the whole, like little metal cars or even coins. I remember my oldest brother rolling Georgia red clay into marbles and baking them in the sun on top of the corrugated tin roof of the Johnny House. No doubt some archaeologist will someday excavate them and think they were antebellum entertainment for poor unfortunate children. Our little brother Johnny was probably traumatized a little bit whenever we called it by that name. My grandmother named her outhouse "Miss Noblet" after a girlfriend she knew when she lived in the city. When strangers were visiting we called it Twin Pines. The grownups would occasionally ask us kids if we needed to visit Twin Pines.
