I was fortunate enough to be in the field when the Lenborough Saxon was found . I put my detector away and sat and watched as 5300 Ethelred and Cnut pennies were unearthed.

There´s still plenty more to be found, 5 million here, 3 million there, over 100 million pounds to be *found* in the *next* decade.

Finding 1000 year old coins will only happen in England. Canada hasn't been around that long. One of the many reasons I want to go there, not just because of that but because I love history and I had family from there come over here in 1912 AFTER the Titanic.

1983 I agree with you 100%.Got to go to England.They have tours to England for metal detectors and take you to places to hunt.I would take a tour first just to get a feel of how things are done.Meaning the laws and where to go.Then if I feel I learned enough I would stay longer and go it alone.

How about norway or sweden? they had vikings 1000 years ago and they made coins
@animeangel1983
@animeangel1983 3 года назад
@@kristoffer816 Do they offer tours for metal detecting too? If I went to the east coast of Canada where the Vikings landed about 400 years before Columbus made his voyage, it's possible I'd find some there too. Newfoundland still has the Viking shelters that were made out of peat moss and carved from hills. I forgot about this comment, guess you never know what comes back to you when you're not thinking about it anymore.
@kristoffer816
@kristoffer816 3 года назад
@@animeangel1983 I cannot think of anyone who gives tours on metal detecting. There are several metal detecting groups that hosts detecting meets. we also have a map with grave mound locations and all other historic sites ranging from viking age to now. All of these mounds are protected and is not legal to dig on.(for obvious reasons). I did not look at the date when this was posted and realise now that its over 1 year old(my bad)

I wouldn't be so over excited, I mean, i've dug thousands of holes and only found the odd pretty worthless silver coins at best. but hey ho, gl also: there are plenty of countries with 1000 year old coins. :p
@heartcrafts3426
@heartcrafts3426 Год назад
Actually, like most people in history they probably did bury gold, coins and other valuable possessions. In medieval villages apart from your average citizen burying their wealth, if they knew there was trouble ie an invasion, the whole village would bury all their wealth. This is why you find huge coin/jewelry hoards to this day in Britain. A huge hoard was found recently called The Grouville Hoard where a local tribe were fleeing Julius Caesars army.

No it belongs to Crown in law
@Wally-H
@Wally-H 2 года назад
@@kevinjamesparr552 No it doesn't. It belongs 50 - 50 to the landowner and the finders, however once the coroner has declared the find as 'treasure' and the British Museum has valued it, museums have the legal right to purchase the hoard. If one of them buys it, the landowner and finders get half of the proceeds (after costs, e.g. auctioneer's fees) each. If not, the hoard is returned to the landowner and finders who then have to decide what to do with it as it's theirs. Usually in a case like this, it would then go to auction for purchase by some rich private buyer or foreign museum. it certainly does not belong to the crown!

@frank1fm634

James I agree with you 100%.Sure there's a black market but it's easy to find the buyers.Ideally you want to sell most of the hoard and keep some for yourself as a collection.They have a lot of coins to sell.You have to be careful of individuals who know about you because many times they contact the authorities and do a sting operation.If they go to collectors first question a collector will ask is where did you get the coins.Not easy,

@Wally-H
@Wally-H 2 года назад
Others have done that and ended up in jail. You would be surprised who is watching when you then go on the internet looking for buyers for a huge haul of Saxon and Norman coins. The next thing that happens is, you get a long prison sentence and you lose all of the money, whereas by reporting it they get 50% of the value less tax which will be around 2 million pounds. Greed does not pay, my friend.
@markhand4530
@markhand4530 2 года назад
that would be stupid imagine putting the word out there with the unscrupulous and dangerous characters who lurk on the black market. They would show up to your house with shot guns and take the whole lot off you.

@crazycressy7986
@crazycressy7986 8 месяцев назад
I've pulled out roman and saxon and medieval silvers and they can be as shiny as the day they were minted I've also found plenty that aren't, it's all down to the acidity of the soil ,and the content of the silver
@knutblume907
@knutblume907 8 месяцев назад
@@crazycressy7986 Then the soil here is very acidic. No silver coin here has ever been shiny. By the way, I thought sulfur sulfide turns silver black and that it is a corrosion-free precious metal and you would need highly specialiced acids and a electrolytic cell to recycle argtentum.
@crazycressy7986
@crazycressy7986 8 месяцев назад
@knutblume907 what percentage are the coins your finding and where abouts are you ,it can change from field to field as well ,it can also change on what fertiliser has been used on the field and what live stock has been grazing on the fields as thier urine and poop degrade metals ,also how deep metals are in the ground and if they have ever contacted the air from ploughing, we find lots of grotty roman coins but when I found "the Roman licking dog hoard" there was 1 Roman bronze coin in the middle of the hoard that came out in very good condition, again if these coins were of a high content of silver and no additional metals added while minting the coins the will come out shiny,
@knutblume907
@knutblume907 8 месяцев назад
@@crazycressy7986 Interesting! I am located in the middle of Germany. Oldest silver finds from the 13th century. Everything in the first 20 cm of soil. Very heavy worked fields for 4000 years. With shards of the ring string people next to it. And remnants of the Aunjetitz culture. Last year after plowing I found a Roman copper coin from the 1st century AD sitting on top of the earth. Far east of the limes and the Harz mountains (The most eastern outpost of the Romans.) This looked like it had been lost yesterday. Every letter is legible. Next to it are copper pennies from the German Empire that are completely flat. Coin corpses. Good indication of recent pollution. I never thought about that. Although it's not quite as bad here in the villages as in the cities.
