Great finds and groovy camerawork. I always like a change from the usual motion sickness inducing metal detecting videos (90% of them, lol) so it's good when you upload another video as it will always be very watchable - really nice coins. All the best for 2014
thank you! that was my intention and it makes me happy to hear that it worked for you! as mentioned before, your camera work inspired me :) best wishes for you, too!
TerraGermania I had a few opportunities to make videos over the last week or so but didn't bother due to the wind. Glad to see we both have the viewers interest at heart, lol
Wow Hans, what a great hunt! Those Roman coins and cut hammered are just beautiful coins! I wish we had history like that here in America. Thanks for posting, it was a great video.
this day was unreal! it's an absolutely shocking moment (positive) to realise what you've just found and a metal detectorists dream come true :). . .you might not be able to find roman stuff in the us but it is your history as well! i hope i can convey a bit of the feeling of finding things like that! thank you for watching! all the best GL&HH! hans
Hi Terra, What a great days detecting, nice Roman coins and great Ring, you seem to have a great permission and hopefully some great finds to unearth in the future. A great video, all the very best in the coming weeks, Regards Richard GL& HH.
hey richard! thank you very much for your nice comment! its a fantastic field and im very excited to see what it will produce in the future! happy new year to you and please stay tuned :) GL&HH!
you know what it is too much for me too! i know what a feeling it gives i once found three in water sources, 1 in the source itself and 2 in the stream from the source! it's a feeling you'll never forget !!!
hi anthony! thank you! it pleases me to hear that you like it! wow really? i'm a bit embarrassed that everyone seems to be an expert on roman coins exept me :D lol. . .i find it hard do define them myself sometimes. thats why i'm so grateful about comments like yours! please stay tuned! GL&HH! hans
Congratulations. you probably know by now but the first roman coin is from Constantine III in very good condition. Mintmark SMAR (Sacra Moneta Arelate:struck in Arles), rare coin and valuable, 2nd is a denarius from Hadrian. Tip: wait till you get home and don't brush with the soil on it, it can scratch coins badly and devaluate
yes, I know, but thank you for telling me anyways :) I stopped brushing coins on the field. I can't watch my old videos for that reason :D thank you for watching!
hi there, very great finds! i like to see your videos a lot. As Pondguru said, nice camerawork! at 2.52: verdamt noch mal hahahaha. Greets from Groningen
hey! thank you very much! it makes me happy that you like my filming style! ups. . lol. . .i was too excited :) does it sound similar in dutch? greets from frankfurt! hans
what a great hunt and thank you for taking us with you,i love the roman silver coins,so much detail on them.i bet that field will have some great finds yet to come, especially after its been rolled flat, merry christmas and a happy new year.
thank you for coming with me! yes a lot detail. . .i'm acting like gollum. . .can't put them aside :) i can imagine that there is much more waiting for me :) merry christmas and a happy new year! hans
Very exciting hunt. Wonderful finds, so crisp. I'm very happy for you. Your videos are sharp and clear, and you keep things in frame, nice! Happy Holidays GL+ Cheers, from Oklahoma.

hello jim! welcome on my channel! thank you for watching, subscribing and for your kind comment! I hope you will like my other videos, too! all the best, hans
Bram Verhoeven hello bram :) thank you my friend! yes, that day was amazing. . .i hit a real productive spot there and it was like beeing in a plesant dream :) will never forget this hunt! thank you for watching and commenting!!! all the best, GL&HH! hans
Very exciting. I had a few silver hammereds before, but never a roman silver. I am detecting in Japan and once a year i go back to Europe. Soon i am going again and cannot wait to go looking for roman coins. Hopefully the ground will not be frozen. Good videos! Keep up the good work! I have been to Frankfurt several times as a kid, but never visited that castle from your previous video. I wish i had. Another time maybe.
thank you for your comment! wow in japan! it has to be very interesting to detect there! i've never found a medieval hammered! i keep my fingers crossed for you to find some romans :) GL&HH! hans
Hans; I think you got your Christmas presents early! Absolutely incredible finding the Roman silver coins and the cut half silver. That site is unbelievable! Look forward to your next hunt-have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
hey fred! yes you said it! it's just fantastic and im still in shock! this field is amazing!!! i can't wait to go back there :) wish you a merry christmas and a happy new year, too! all the best! hans

. .sowas erlebt man nicht alle tage! haha. . fluchen?? ich muß gleich mal schauen was du meinst ;) danke, dass du meine videos schaust!!!! LG, VG&GF! hans
I love the condition of the silver coins, I felt the cold you were feeling though its very warm here. I hope when you cleaned the coin it proved to be your first cut half. Take care Hans, good luck 🍀and happy hunting Mary-Ellen UK 🙋👍
imagine that these coins are almost 2000 years old! amazing! the cut half is a cut half :) thank you for watching and for your kind words! all the best, hans
Great Finds and great video! You did in fact find a Roman ring or at least part of(the item top row on the right ;).Where in Germany was that detecting trip.I'm from Poland....no Roman here unfortunately:(
hey marek! thank you! great that you like it! yes, now i know too :D my archaeologist defined it for me. . .i come from frankfurt and i'm detecting the area arround. . .thank you for watching! GL&HH! hans
tnt neon hello :) the first roman silvercoin i've found that day is a siliqua. . they are smaller and from the late roman period. . .wonderful coins :) i keep my fingers crossed for you to find one of these beauties soon! thank you for watching and commenting!!! all the best, GL&HH! hans
I was happy for you when you found your silver pieces. Congratulations, even though it's been a while. Forgive me for playing catch up, watching your videos in the order of your posting them, I want to learn from your experiences. Good luck Hans--Johann.
+Johnny Sachu hello johann, thank you my friend, that's very kind of you! it was such a great day! It's amazing how this denarius was laying directly on the surface :) thank you for watching my videos, i'm glad that you like them!!! all the best, hans
Hallo Hans! I liked so much your videos that I decided to watch them in order from the very beginning. So, here is a very late comment :-) I'm not a detectorist myself, but I share your feeling on every finding! I live in BW, border of the Donau, down the hill of an old castle ruin, some km away from the Bodensee. So you can imagine how my hands are itchy to start with the hobby. So much potential around!!! All the best for you!! I still have some 40 videos ahead to watch :-)
***** hello rafael :) welcome on my channel and thank you very much for watching and for your kind words about my videos! i'm happy to hear that! make sure that you get a permission from the archaeological department and the land owners before you start detecting. . .without that metal detecting is prohibited in germany and you can get in trouble! i hope you will enjoy my other videos too! thanks fot the watch again :) all the best, hans
Fair enough! :-) but I won't be into this hobby yet anytime soon. Language is still a huge barrier. Btw, how do you get a permission? Do you find a field first and just go straight to a nearby house to look for the owner? Or you research some properties registers in the City Hall? How often are the owners willing to allow that? Is this allowance formal in Germany (written, signed)? Finally, how to handle which findings go to the museum, which goes to the land's owner... Too much questions, sorry :-) have a nice day!
***** are you from spain? i know german is a tough language :Dfirst step is to get permission from the archaeologists to detect a certain area. . its like a licence you have to carry arround when you go detecting. . then you ask for permission of the land owners. . i just went to a farm that was of my interest and spoke to the farmer. . normally it's easy to get the permission. . .you will get all inormations how to handle finds and about the possessive from the archaeologists. . have a nice day too!
thank you for commenting! yes you are right! but i was very nervous :D next time. .i promise! ;) blees you, too! merry christmas and a happy new year! hans
+Min Abra don't worry, the glass in the trash pile was a modern piece. . it still had the metal rim on it where the screw cap was connected with. . . thank you for watching! all the best, GL&HH! hans
I believe Min Abra was speaking about the colored glass toward the end of the video, not the broken bottle. I agree, the glass does not look modern to me. I think you have an artifact.
Gratuliere!!! Tolle Funde. Congratulation!!! The first coin should be a roman Siliqua, struked under Constantine III. The second one is a roman denarius of Hadrian. Nice finds.
LG, hans
Hello, I'm an American living in Germany with a great interest in MD. I finnaly bought my own MD and looking to get out there for some Roman coins! Funny thing is a few weeks ago I bought 2 Roman coins from a old bookstore/map shop in downtown Trier, the old Roman capital. Here's the interesting thing, one of my 2 Roman coins looks indentical as your second find of a roman silver coin! Its a Publivs Aelivs Hadrianus 117-138 period silver denar. I bought mine for 59€. I'm 100% positive that's your silver Roman coin as both sides match my coin.
skyisland hello skyisland! thank you for watching and commentig :) make sure that you get permission from the archaeologists and the landowners before you start detecting. . .you can get in serious trouble if you don't do that as metal detecting is prohibited without permission here in germany! interesting what you say about your coin. . it's funny that it is the same one :) thank you for the definition. . mine is still examined by the archaeologists and i'm excited about the result! all the best, hans
TerraGermania Hans, thanks for the information. Can you clarify what exactly I should do to begin searching? I live in Rheinland Pfalz, do I ask permission from Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Trier for searching on public lands? If I see crop field I'll go ask the land owner for permission, do I make a verbal agreement if I find something I keep it then report finds to museum? Also are their any groups I can join to MD with local Germans? I speak very little German though. Thanks again!
hello again, follow this link. . they can give you more informations as i only know what to do here in hessen. unfortunately the page is only in german. landesdenkmalpflege.de/index.php?id=18782&no_cache=1 all the best, hans
great video and what finds absolutely fantastic you must be well pleased well done.have a merry Christmas.and a prosperous new year.went out myself today but the weather was pants.i found 44 pence and a George the sixth ship halfpenny.i will add it to my boxing day video gl hh mick
hey mick! thank you! i'm still in shock! what a day! have a happy christmas and a wonderful new year, too! i will watch your video! love the coins you can find over there in england! GL&HH! hans
Hello Hans thanks for letting me know , here in England single finds or less than ten found together of bronze coins are not classed as 'treasure' so no need to report to authorities - and roman bronze coins can sell for multiple thousands of dollars at auction , Best of luck for your future searches , Cheers Anthony
not at all anthony! i know that your laws in england concerning metal detecting are quite liberal! here in germany they are very strict compared to the uk. but on the oter hand it means that there is still lot of stuff to find here as metal detecting isn't as popular and possible here. . .so i can't complain ;D GL&HH! hans
So amazing!!! What a day! Looks like you got a Constantine III from early in the 5th century. The condition- like it was minted yesterday. Have seen that mint mark before, but I can't find anyone to tell me what it is. I think it's from Arles. (S)acra (M)onetum (AR)latum. This guy lived in Arles for a while because the Germans were raising hell (again). The second... I believe that's Hadrian! That is Fortuna on the reverse with her rudder and cornucopia. Big congratulations to you, Hans!
wow! i'm impressed! thank you so much for your comment and your research! i very much appreciate it! i simply don't find the time to do proper research myself sometimes. i wish you a merry christmas and a happy new year! please stay tuned :) hans
Work is slow at the museum this time of year. Rome is a hobby of mine. (We have beautiful snow for Christmas. Just returned from feeding the wild birds.) Detecting videos have helped to make 2013 a good year for me... so interesting. And not only do you show me ROMAN STUFF... my family watched your Christmas Market video as part of our run-up to the holidays. Seasons Greetings! ---Mike
ah, ok. . .so you are a specialist! i thought so because of the profound research and explanation. thank you again :) there is more roman stuff to come. . .believe me ;) i love the thougt that you are watching my x-mas maked video together! it makes me happy!! i wish all of you a happy christmas! hans
and because they were in the water and were not moved they were in perfect condition, 1700 years under water and the silver was still perfect, just what black !!
hi, I you have found 2 roman silvers within 10 meters distance, I think you might have a cache of coins that was once plowed. Worth scanning the area with an deep pi w a large frame 1x1, or with an Vlf but w a larger coil so you can reach deeper. I am saying this because it's a bit impossible to find roman silvers so close to one another. Just a thought. Best regards and I had enjoyed your video.
hello marius, I detect a field that is considered to be an alemannic settlement and I keep finding loads of roman coins spread on a huge area. I document each and every find with gps and give the data to the archaeologists together with the finds. a geomagnetic prospection that happened early this year didn't show evidence of a possible hoard in this area. I simply has bee a very busy place in the past (maybe a market place ) and finding two roman silvers in close proximity to another is not unusual on this field. thank you for watching and for your kind comment :) I'm very happy to hear that you enjoy watching them :) all the best, hans
The Constantine III Siliqua is really quite rare and in very good conditions for this type. The coin absolutely needs to be reported to the authorities. The Hadrian denarious is a lot more common. However, you should never brush ancient coins like this. This an easily destroy much of its collectors' value.
hello dirk, I'm solely detecting with the permission of the department of archaeology. I documented the find spot, reported the find and handed it over to the archaeologists several years ago. I stopped using the brush on the fields long ago. it is painful for me to watch my older videos :D
Hallo Hans I watch your video's with pleasure, I wondered why you use the toothbrush on the coins with sand and mud on the surface, It could scratch your finds, instead of a small box with destilled water for the first cleaning ? Kind regards, Joop
+joop pronk hello joop, I'm very happy to hear that you like my videos! thank you for watching and for your kind comment! I stopped using the toothbrush on antique coins. but you have to know that I'm only interested in the archaeological value of the items I find. the evaluations collectors have towards coins are totally irrelevant for me as I not intend to sell any of the items I find. .thank you for your tip with the destilled water :) all the best, hans
Rolf Jarnes hello rolf! i'm using the xp goldmaxx power. yes there are. . the biggest one is "abenteuer schatzsuche" just type it in google. . .c scopes you can buy at " eurocosm" thank you for watching! all the best, GL&HH! hans
+Jef Neyens hello jef, thank you, I'm happy to hear you like them! thank you for watching! I've made a video about how I clean the coins I find. her's a link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DVCwVeh_DsQ.html&lc=z12oingigouac13yi04cczm5wwejvdzoaf0 all the best, hans
Your "interesting stone" is an Agate. It is usually broken up to make flakes for razors. There are some mines in Germany that have produced Agates and other semi precious stones back before those silver coins were used.
wow! thank you for the info about the stones! i was wondering because i've never seen this kind of stones in my neck of the woods. .. very intersting! will try to find out where the next mine is situated. merry christmas to you! hans
perfect! thank you :) i'm from frankfurt and unfortunately it isn't sonwing. . .good for detecting but a pity because of christmas ;) it's 14°C and rainy :P
wow. Great! Please; what camera do you use? & Do you install a tripod for each shot? David Sears' Vol I & II will give you ID for the two Romans (great finds) - the are post republic that is for sure. Great dig!! Congratulations!!!!!
thank you! :) it pleases me that that you like the vid! it's a honor :) i'm using a HX WA 30 from panasonic and a tripod. i'm detecting systematicly in small areas of the field so i don't have to carry arround the tripod all the time. it's allways next to me . .check it it's perfect for MD. . .thank you for the ID! please stay tuned, merry x-mas GL&HH! hans
TerraGermania that sounds like a good method... but you will need to find places with high target density.... it takes time to film & dig..... but, for me, filming it gives a new dimmension to the hobby - I will watch your channel as often as I can. MERRY xMAS,
thats right. . .high target density is perfect for that method but what youve explained about detecting and filming is the same with me. . .its another exciting facet of the hobby and its joyful and not a bother! i will stay tuned on your channel, too!! GL&HH!!hans
I think it’s Constantius II because I can read out on the left side STAN and before that CON but it’s hard to read. I have a coin like that and it says DN CONSTAN INSPL AVG.
glad you like the finds :) If you want to use a metal detector in germany you always need a permission. not only from the department of archaeology but also from the respective land owners. without these permists you indeed can get in trouble with the police.
The Milkmann hello! you're right. . i didn't change the title of the video yet but my archaeologist already told me that it's a siliqa :) thank you for watching and for your comment! all the best, hans
yes you are right. . .even 300AD :) i'm not an expert! my archaeologist said that it could have been an alemannic settlement i've discovered. . .thank you for commenting! i'm still watching your cannel! very nice videos!
Hi again , i know you probably do not want to sell your little treasures but if you ever find nice large roman coins made of brass or bronze i can put you in touch with a friend in the usa who would be very willing to give you the best possible price .
hi again anthony! thank you for the offer but i have to hand over all substancial finds i make to the archaeological department and later i together with the farmer will donate them to a local museum. i'm not interested in money it's all about interest and excitement. by the way i would act disorderly and would risk my permission. best wishes, hans
Your coin appears to be a very rare Constantine III siliqua with reverse design of Victory seated and legend VICTORIA AAVGGG. You should have it examined by a professional to see if that is indeed what it is.
thank you for your exciting comment! the coins are beeing defined at the moment by a professional numismatician of the archaeological department. im very excited about the result and im plannig to promulgate it here. but your comment is a nice foretaste :) all the best, hans
@@vornadopro6502 It is Constantius III with reverse legend VICTORIA AAVGGG. The coin is from Arles and looks to have the mint mark SMAR which would make it RIC, Vol. X, #1538. Constantius II did not mint any siliquae with this reverse legend.
