Metal Detecting Tips: Pinpointing 

I made a balls of this by forgetting my detecting spade (as mentioned in video) and the one I used here really is unsuitable but even so with the right technique a proper excavation can be achieved. Fact if some people are plain lazy and they don't care about other detectorists who will be tarred with the same brush as them when they make a total arse of digging. Personally I'd have them shot. No worries and best of luck. The choice of detector will be dictated by what sort of land your permissions are as different detectors have their own strengths and weaknesses on ploughed and pasture.

glowpipe lol, Sometimes it can be difficult to pinpoint in contaminated land but normally the target should be bang in the middle - if not then the probe is very important to find the target in the side wall of the hole.

Yes just form an imaginary 'X' by stepping to 90% and remembering where the signal came from. X marks the spot.

First step is to find out who actually owns the land, second check your local byelaws. The land in this video was designated as a 'public area' but was owned by a local private company, leased to the local council for public use.

@@pondguru None of the council's anywhere near me would allow you to dig on "their" land, and from what I've heard it's very difficult around here to get permission from local land owners. Plenty of organised digs though, where farmers are given a financial incentive.

@@catleugh (my other channel) Yes, it is very difficult for many to get permission to detect on land anywhere. I'm quite fortunate since I went to school in a relatively rural area and from an early age was ferreting, fishing and shooting on the vast majority of land in my area so it was an easy transition to ask if it was OK if I could go detecting too later in life. I used to install and maintain ponds and do other landscaping work up in the hills so that got me plenty of land too. It's definitely a case of 'who you know' when asking for permission to do anything on someone's land. Even with the land in this video was used as a picnic site by the public but was privately owned by a large water company and overseen by a guy who used to be the head keeper where I went shooting. The beach is probably the only place where nobody bothers anyone who is detecting but even then you're supposed to have a permit issued by the 'Crown' to enable you to hunt the beach. It's mad so it's no wonder so many detectorists end up stealing permissions from their friends then falling out over it. I prefer to be way up in the hills where other detectorists don't bother going as generally they are a shady bunch, lol If you haven't already bought a decent detector I'd suggest getting permisson first or joining a club and borrowing a detector before you splash out £1k or more on a top of the range machine since the vast majority of channels showing their 'finds' on RU-vid are fake - especially the US ones where they're finding multiple rings and smart phones with every trip to their local swimming hole. The reality is often spending hundreds of hours between really good finds with almost everything else being interesting but worthless - you've got to be either extremely lucky, persistent or hunting multiple virgin sites (which are very rare) for a top end machine to pay for itself.

@@ThousandYardStare Thanks for the comprehensive answer. I bought a Garret Ace 250 and a NEL Tornado coil a couple of months ago. Have only been on organised digs so far, including one in December when the first inch or two of the pasture we were on was frozen solid! I've been paying £15 a dig, but it's worth it for the pleasure I get out of it.

@@catleugh That's the situation for the majority of people - just getting outdoors, having great conversations and occasionally finding / seeing great finds keeps the spirits up and in this time where so many people are suffering from mental illness brought on by the PLANdemic or seeing their friends die after 'trusting the science' metal detecting is an excellent escape from the horrors of the current situation and what's to come, lol When we're detecting we are literally in another world, listening for those sweet tones then digging like fury for the treasure lost for centuries - I wish you all the best whenever you're out, man and I genuinely hope you find some properly nice treasure. Metal detecting is a great hobby and digging up the secrets of the past is very addictive. I haven't been detecting for months but just talking about it is making me want to charge up my machine and get out now. If it costs you £15 to get out into Nature and get some great exercise while learning about the past then it's money well spent.

The etrac has a depth meter which is reasonably accurate but can get caught out by very small or large items which may read deeper / shallower than they actually are.
