Kai is ridiculous but considering his first few bands were literally grindcore, it is even more so impressive that he is now able to work with Nightwish and perform beautifully there - he can do it all, honestly. And he's shown he can.

I totally agree with You regarding concerts. In my youth I was the one head on at the front fence below the stage, but now I'm the one finding the spot just in front of the mixer board if that's on the floor. I reckon that there is where the sound is as best.

Kai is a beast - but an economical one. In Nightwish, Jukka was very theatrical, contorting his body to reach drums that looked like they were deliberately put out of his reach. Kai just does whatever he needs to do for the song. You want Kai to go heavy with Nightwish? "Nightwish - TRIBAL (Official Lyric Video)". He had to buy extra Toms for this one song! 🔥

Great reaction. Kai is a monster and a metronome. Another cool fact is that the bassist in this video (and Wintersun) is Jukka Koskinen who now has replaced Marco in Nightwish.

you should also check out Ne Obliviscaris. their drummer, Dan Presland has gotta be one of the top ten drummers in metal right now. He's got drum playthroughs on his channel that you can watch to get the full drum view. Forget Not and And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope are two of their best songs, great drumming in both.

Kai has a lot of drum cam (including this song) and teaching vids on YT. Kai also studied Jazz drumming in NYC and jazz is what he plays in his off time.

Nightwish's new album is the first with Kai playing as Kai, instead of filling for Jukka. I've read that he had to add drums to his kit. It'll be fun to listen to when they can get touring again.

Kai does have some complicated rhythmic patterns to play on some Nightwish songs, for example look up Weak Fantasy at Wembley (kind of drum solo) or The Poet and the Pendulum, also at Wembley, with some odd stuff in between verses.

We all love the pirate but have to admit Kai is a beast machine.

Nice video, enjoyed! This is from Wintersun’s second album, which contains only 5 songs. And in three of them you can find such a rehearsal video. I would recommend the song "Time" next. From this same rehearsal session. There is also a drum cam video from this same rehearsal session. This is the same song you just watched. The camera is then in front of Kai shooting. But you can watch it maybe at your own time, not necessarily having to make a new video of it. But it’s interesting to watch his work! Now that Kai is playing at Nightwish, Wintersun has used tour drummers. And if I understand correctly, they play this song a lot simpler ...

Great reaction! 😊 Jari Mäenpää is mastermind behind the band. Wintersun started as his soloproject and he was kicked out from Ensiferum (which is great band also, try Victory Song) cause Wintersun took so much time. Other wizards are Teemu Mäntysaari (guitar, backing vocals) and Tommi Koskinen (bass, backing vocals). I really hope you could continue with Wintersun. You still have two songs from same rehearsals... Time and Land of Snow and Sorrow. Also Forest Seasons album is great. There is four songs for each season... Awaken From the Dark Slumber (spring), Forest That Weeps (summer), Eternal Darkness (autumn) and Loneliness (winter). First two are more epic. Eternal Darkness is really dark and haunting, but beautifull. Loneliness is really emotional and beautifull. Also their first album Wintersun has great songs like Death and Healing, Starchild, Winter Madness, Sadness and Hate.

Finnish metal is the best metal of the world. Just like bands like a Wintersun, Children Of Bodom, Nightwish, Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica, Evil Drive, Warmen, Elias "Evil" Viljanen, HIM, Apocalyptica, Tarot, Thunderstone, Raskasta Joulua, Jarkko Ahola, Sentenced, Brother Firetribe, Kenziner, Tarja Turunen... If you get a chance, check out Dan Presland of the band Ne Obliviscaris. His drumming on the song "And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope" is worth seeing. I recommend the live version in Colorado 2016.

I am the same in concert, i go to the mixer booth, in front or side or back of ot -bec there is always the best audio.. ;) And just listen, observe, sunk in to what i see and hear. I dont like to dance or jump around.

Kai is one of the best drummers in my opinion!!!

The singer Jari ('Yurry' like hurry, but not as 'her-y') sure puts his all in this. Including he composed the most of it. The process went like he did the raw version of the song by himself first then showed it to Kai. At least for their first songs. Don't know if this was still the same, or did the other two join more in the preparation phase. Now on the gigs the singer doesn't play the guitar, there's a 5th member for that. Jari said it's too difficult to play and sing - well, can't blame him, seen this composition. He put himself into quite a tight spot. Some have also commented he hurt his hand I don't don't how much Kai could decide of the drum section - but he has partly himself to blame for this monster of a song :)

Plague Flowers the kaleidoscope. The man has calves of steel. PS sorry about the split comment
