It’s time consuming, but letting the piece cool down completely while it’s all clamped down is the only way I’ve kept things square. And it’s the main reason I spent the money on a fixture table. Love your videos. You keep me motivated. Thanks!

You tack bars on the inside to keep it from bowing. If it still bows you can add a little bit of heat to the inside of the tube and shrink the steel. I used to build Derricks for drilling rigs and we had to heat the bottom of the tubes to get the bow out
@TheModelmaker123
@TheModelmaker123 2 года назад
Agree with Tyler on the heating. If you need to bow it out heat the inside and let it cool. From a practical perspective you can clamp it all you want, but the welds cause shrinkage and expansion and as soon as you release the clamps the internal stresses will cause distortion. Unless you have a very rigid frame with lots of cross bracing, you are going to get bowing. Time is money. So, just weld it and make adjustments after. You can use a hydraulic jack, a come-along, beat it or heat it. All will work for this application. With that welding table you can easily perform any of those straightening options as you can lock and pin at any location. The severity may determine the option to use.

They make a 2" deep lock box Jim.. or at least they used to.. think i got em from Jansens ornamental. On the heat draw from the inside weld i used to just take my torch (can use a rosebud dont have to) and apply an even amount of heat to the first 3 or 4" fron corners of tube on the outside obviously and the opposite draw effect would usually bring the middle back out pretty dam close with the right amount of 🔥. Appreciate the videos dude keep it up 👍

15:45 maybe you could preshim a backward bow into it planning for the warp when you weld the other side
@trg3761
@trg3761 2 года назад
Save the inside corner filet for last. outside corner first, then face weld next, and if you can flip it over and do the face weld on the other-side. then do the opposite face, next like doing up lug nuts alternate your welds. Inside corner filet last that one pulls the most.

Cheap hydraulic ram kit from Harbor Freight would help with fixing warp... more control and less noisy or violent.
@robertteap8052
@robertteap8052 2 года назад
Problem with a hydraulic ram is it pushes in both directions.. so would require stabilising the straight side in many points and fixing a sturdy support for the ram to push against.. a lot easier to just use a 12lb. persuader.

I usually leave the inside to be welded last. Works pretty good for me, I haven`t had this issue anymore. Great job by the way.

Great work! One tip if I may add is to end your welds on your tacks, rather than start on them. Your tacks are "cold" and running your weld over them will help the "cold" tack fuse in better with the base material.

Cut some pieces of 1/2” or any scrap metal same size of inside dimension to lay inside the frame 2 or 3 top middle and bottom that really helps out .. I have a few out of 3/4sq with a 5/8sq inside to slide in and out with a bolt handle to adjust to different sizes ..

I would love to see an in depth video of how you measure the space, account for the hinges, account for other gaps and spaces need, how you put a straight piece of steel to uneven rocks. And why people can’t just lift these gates off the hinges?

Those are his secrets! Lol. Really it's all just math,that you use for the width of the hinges you use ,the with of the gate opening for you application. It's all on you to figure out and subtract, divide. Simple.

straightening instead of pounding it with sledge. and since you have a pinable table. pin material and use a porta power to straighten the metal. will give you a more controlled straighteng process

The only way I’ve found to stop warping on this type of fab work is to tack some braces to the workpiece diagonally in both directions or diagonally in alternating corners 2 seems to work well

I would like to add to this video. What I do is pre drill thru holes on the angle iron and you only need to go thru the thinner sheet tube with self tapped screws. And then there's less chance of damaging anything.

Hi mr. Jim. I'm a welder and here are my two tips and tricks which I use when dealing with warping: 1)ex. If I have a warped rectangular frame, I just give some spot welds in equal distances from the center on the opposite side, and when it cools it should shrink back straight. Always apply heat to the opposite side where it bent. 2) I use two portable 4 ton kit with a lot of adaptors and a 5 t pull jack using with some heavy duty chain and straighten things out very easily. Sorry, but I never use a sledgehammer to straighten stuff out.
@r.rodriguez4991

Hey Jimbo, back when I used to make gates more often or railings, I would use a couple of ratchet straps or a come along to an anchor similar to how a body shop uses a body puller. You could also use a hi-lift or farm jack or any type of streamline Jack or a hydraulic power pusher.

1. Brace every corner 2. Weld alternate outside fillet corners 3. Weld alternate but corners but start from the inside corner of the frame and work your way out to the outside fillet you just welded 4. Then just Weld your inside fillets but still do opposite corners. Probably wouldn't hurt to clamp down to table where you cam either.

that just happens because of the metal shrinkage. i try to put a little bend in pieces that i know are going to get a filler added to them or use a bottle jack and 2x4s after the fact to rectify the warpage as much as possible. I don't think my shop (garage lol) would survive if i missed with a sledge and sent it across the room.

@Tig-Weldor
@Tig-Weldor 2 года назад
The bowing is happening when you weld the flat bar along the length. To stop it you need to force bars in that are a bit oversize to bow the frame out the other way while you weld it. How much you force it the other will take some trial and error. But to be honest it’s probably not worth the effort if you can easily knock them back out straight like you have.
