For someone who apparently never worked on a metal OST before, Jamie Christopherson had a pretty amazing start with MGR. I love how the lyrics of the boss themes are there to tell you more about their character, as they don’t really get fleshed out ingame other than Sam.
sam doesnt get fleshed out that much either. if it werent for his theme and dlc we’d think hes just some overly cocky desperado goon who happens to be really good with a sword.
The design of these themes is something that should be done in more games. I love the fact that these songs explain the characters beliefs and personalities while also being absolute jams.
And honestly its amazing way to flesh out characters. Theres no need for 10h of backstory, falshbacks, notes, cutscenes and whatnot. One song that you can listen to for like 5 minutes and you basically learn everything you need to know.

@@David-kt3kb I think right now it is in last place, but he is changing the process so that all 5 WILL be covered. It is just determining the order. Before, he would cover the winner then put the highest donation into running with the other 4. That would lead to certain OSTs to be stuck on the voting block for months.
I love how he instantly picks up that the rift in the Hot Wind Blowing is the same as Collective Consciousness. Really goes to show he understands music
each songs lyrics in MGR tells a story about the character, and some internal struggle they are dealing with. Mistral has never felt like she belonged, Monsoon is a nihilist, Sundowner is a warmonger who only functions in the fight, Samuel is torn between fighting and giving in, bladewolf is fighting with the fact he's "chained" by him being an AI under the control of someone. Also, "It has to be this way" is a mix of raiden and armstrong's struggles. "I've carved my own path, you followed your wrath" could be from either POV because of the senator's brutal ways, but also because of Jack the Ripper existing.
And Sundowner's is unique because While most of the others are basically the motivations and ideals of the boss fight Sundowner's theme is from the perspective of those who are harmed by him and the last two or about Raiden not Senator Armstrong
And Kahmsin's was just roasting him that he's an idiot that thinks he's special compared to other soldiers but the only difference is actually just him having robo mecha-legs
And "Rules of Nature" plays for fights against Unmanned Gears. Once upon a time, the Metal Gear was the ultimate weapon and feared as such. By the time of MGR, however...well, let's just say that MG Ray went from the semifinal boss in MGS2 (and even then only because of the series tradition of having a man-to-man duel for the very last boss), to the _prologue's midboss_ in this game.
As such is the rule of nature for the way of things to evolve and what was once powerful and feared will eventually become outdated and get replaced or entirely phased out as a concept. The metal gears are now the prey to the new predators.
Fun fact: All the main cyborg antagonists in this game have references to wind in their names or themes. Monsoon- a type of seasonal thunderstorm in desert areas Mistral- a type of cold northwesterly wind that blows down from France to the Mediterranean Sundowner- in his theme it refers to desert updrafts that birds of prey use to glide Jetstream Sam- the jet stream is a stable fast moving air current that persists blowing across the continental United States
In his DLC Sam was also called Minuano by Monsoon. "Minuano, the cool Brazilian wind". Sundowner is also occasionally called the "Californian wildfire". His wind is fast and dry, preventing the extinguishing of said wildfires. You never hear him say it because he's just so cruel, so powerful that he doesn't need to introduce himself, you already know who he is.
They are collectively referred to as the Winds of Destruction. The wind motif is very much a deliberate one that is told to the player rather directly, much like everything else in the game, which I love
Can I just say thank you for doing THE ENTIRE soundtrack. The vocal boss ones overshadow everything, some people don't even know what I'm talking about when I say my favorite song from the game is Dark Skies. The game has so much more to offer and hearing somebody who actually knows about music and give more technical explanations about its nuances is refreshing! Also the reason The only Thing I know for real is #2 in the release but 11 in Herr is because you fight the boss it belongs to at the beginning of the game with the instrumental playing, but you get the full glorious vocal package with the solo in the second to last boss of the game
My favorite part about this is that Jamie Christopherson had barely played any metal at all before this. He learned while he was making this soundtrack.

Watching Dan really is fascinating, because he's one of the only music people I watch who are visually just as expressive as the music he listens to. It's also really funny, watching chat devolve into memes and song lyrics; it really is the perfect display of mankind's duality
I’m so glad you went back to listen to A Stranger I Remain a few times. I absolutely adore that song and I always seem to be the odd one out when talking about favorite MGSR vocal tracks.
I like it and it's up there but I like the other boss themes more. Unless we're talking about the 'perfect edit' in which case that's something I listen to on the daily
39:30 it’s track number 2 because the instrumental version plays very early into the beginning of the game when you fight the boss for a guaranteed loss. You hear it with vocals closer to the end of the game where you fight the boss again.
I think it's fitting that "It Has To Be This Way" is so key variable given the fight with armstrong was all over the place emotionally but not really disorganized
The only thing I know for real is listed as track 2 because there's an early game "boss fight" (you're scripted to be forced to lose) where the instrumental version plays. You fight the same boss later in the game for real, and that's where the full version with lyrics plays.
I never noticed the riff in Hot Wind Blowing is the same as in Collective Consciousness. Completely fits since Khamsin is a patriot that believes he’s fighting for the “freedom” that the lyrics of Collective Consciousness are condemning
I first heard this OST when I was 27 years old, a few months after the game's launch. Good thing, too, because this soundtrack was made _with the express purpose of killing anyone above 40._
The more I watch your live reactions and the reactions of other creators with backgrounds in music, the more I pick up and recognize. Thank you for making stuff like this, it's really insightful for someone like me who is very unfamiliar with music theory.
The faces you make when hearing good music, quite hilarious, love to see such extensive reactions. Most people react to single tracks, you're one of the first i saw to do entire albums.
The singer on "A Stranger I Remain" is Free Dominguez, who was the lead singer of an industrial metal band in the 2000's called Kidneythieves, their music was featured heavily in the game 'Deus Ex: Invisible War' which made me a fan of them. I only found this out a few years after playing MGR when I watched a live performance of the OST played to promote the game during release (BTW that video isn't amazing, whoever did the audio mixing for the event was a complete moron and completely fucked up the volume levels for the various bands, so some instruments and vocals are RIDICULOUSLY LOUD while others are completely inaudible)
Man I remember seeing a music video for one of their songs back about 20 years ago. I can't remember the name of the song for the life of me and any time I tried looking up the band I came up with nothing. I completely forgot about them until you mentioned it.
I believe he is listening to the various songs via a playlist on RU-vid, which could explain the wildly varying audio quality and volume from track to track

I think you're confusing Sam Carter with Jason Miller. As far as I can tell Sam had nothing to do with MG:R. Jason also had no part in Footfalls either, other than maybe the "2 toned echoes" part.

Surprisingly, my favorite tracks from this OST are different from everyone else’s from what I’ve seen (but I love the whole OST, bought the album on iTunes) but they’re A Stranger I Remain and Return To Ashes. There’s just something about a female vocalist singing their heart out over what I think is Nu Metal instrumentals that gets the adrenaline going (Casey Lee Williams has the same affect on me in the RWBY OST). And while return to ashes sounds badass in the background in game while you’re fighting, the lyrics go unnoticed by a lot of people compared to the other songs even though I believe they’re among the most relevant not just to the game but also in real life. Just two underrated examples from a legendary soundtrack.
Glad to see you pausing to talk more! You always have interesting things to say! Also, the boss themes are actually dynamically played back inside the game itself. In most cases, the big gimmick is that the game mutes the vocal track until the fight itself enters its last phase, at which point it skips to the chorus at the end of the bar and unmutes the lyrics. Or maybe there's discrete instrumental and vocal versions stored and it swaps them, but still, the effect's the same. The two big exceptions are Only Thing, which starts with the vocals and silences them anytime you make Sam drop his sword, and Has to Be, which also starts with its vocals and goes instrumental anytime _you_ get disarmed. It's worth noting that these two fights are roughly consecutive to each other, and in that order.
He got so distracted by the great vocals in A Stranger I Remain that he had to double back to it. Completely agree! That song stands out so much, her voice is perfect for it
the credits low-key made me emotional, it was a combination of how good this song is, knowing there will never be a sequel, and knowing that i had so much fun playing this game
Few more osts to recommend: No More Heroes 1 and 2 - Rather varied and creative Japanese electronic music, jazz fusion, punk rock and even a bit of pop Transistor - Liquid Drum and Bass meets a jazz singer Silent Hill - All of the ones by Akira Yamaoka, those being almost all with the exception of Downpour and Book of Memories. These soundtracks involve Industrial, Industrial Rock, Ambient, Noiz and Anti-Music Transformers Devastation - Vince DiCola returns to make more Transformers music.
No More Heroes 2 I feel would especially blow his mind with all the different artists and musical styles somehow all working together. And Silent Hill is a given.
It's surprising you didn't note the very obvious and prominent trip-hop in Silent Hill, given that's one of the primary musical genres that Yamaoka employed on the series. No More Heroes 3 also deserves a shout, absolutely masterful soundtrack there too.
I REALLY love It Has To Be This Way because, the entire time, you can tell it's meant to represent Raiden and Armstrong talking to each other about their ideals. They're both similar and they know this. They both strive for world peace but Armstong is willing to use any needs necessary including using an entire war while Raiden wants to go a different path of this.
Fun fact - while he chuckles at the Sundowner garden theme "Mystical Ninja" the name is intentional - it's a reference to Konami's "Ganbare Goemon", or, as the franchise was known stateside - "Legend of the Mystical Ninja"
If the soundtrack ain't enough to tip the scales, nothing else is. but yeah get it if you can, hours of entertainment even if it's a short game relatively.

MGR:R has definitely left an impact on music tastes for me and MANY others who found the game back when "Rule of Nature" was the meme to quote before and even after "One thing I know for real" and "It has to be this way". I want to make a song like "It has to be this way" for a game one day!!!!
I'm sure you've been recommended it before, but Ori 1 and 2 both have magnificent and beautiful soundtracks. Also Nier: Gestalt and Replicant remake is almost better than Automata's
Mystical Ninja is a reference to the old Goemon titles that the track pulls musical cues from, and the reason The Only Thing I Know for Real is track 2 is because it technically is the second track to play during the main story. It just doesn't have its vocals during that mission since it isn't the last time you fight Sam.
as a small note, calamity mod was heavily inspired by this game and so was the soundtrack by dm dokuro. roar of the jungle dragon has a lot of parallels with "collective unconscious" and "it has to be this way", which is super cool.
You should check out the Halo osts, specifically Halo Reach and Halo 3 ODST, they have a mix of Jazz, rock, orchestral and really depressing piano stuff in there lol

“Bury the light” and “It has to be this way” have to be the two best video game songs in my opinion. And it’s not even that I’m biased cause I’ve never played MGR or DMC

I would love if you could listen to the Narita Boy soundtrack. It's really good, but basically no one has heard of it sadly. It's like TRON mixed with Daft Punk and It's one of my alltime favorite synth-inspired soundtracks!
I love seeing someone get blown away by one of the things I find super exciting and your insights into the workings of the music were really great to hear... since the only thing I could connect it to before was the narrative, visuals and gameplay, but you give a musical context which is awesome.
Reaction started off strong, but I wish you didn’t basically turn the entire reaction into a lesson about how keys are like car colors by the end. To those of us who already know what keys are, it made for a very repetitive reaction. By the end, I just rolled my eyes every time a great song ended and you immediately started off your commentary with “So this song’s car color…” or something along those lines I want to hear what the OST did that was impressive or unique in your eyes, not why it’s interesting that this was the first song so far to have a red car instead of a blue or white car. Just try to switch up your commentary topics a bit more in the future

something i like about hot wind blowing is, at the beginning you can hear the guitar play the “Heat of the desert, dust settles on my face. Without a compass, the soldier knows no disgrace.” which you cant unhear once you realize it
I feel like I've managed to pin down most the boss references. I think 'we try to justify all the things that have occurred' is Sundowner 'Without a compass the solider knows no disgrace' is surely Monsoon as Monsoon as a nihilist has no compass of morals. 'Out of the ashes the eagle rises still' is Armstrong because America is represented by an eagle and out of the ashes he does indeed rise....METAL GEAR RISING lol. 'Blindly followed the herd' is obviously Bladewolf. 'On my own, invisible warrior' is Sam as he is a warrior without purpose, hence the invisible. That's all I got. Lol
