I managed to get my hands on a copy of the first one from '99. It was second hand and I had to get it imported from Japan, but dang was it worth it! It's such a high-quality book and the art in it is amazing!

First of all thank you for showing us all those artbooks. I do have a question though. Culd you tell me whether the cover of MGS 1 AB (not the plastic one) is rough like a painting paper or is it slippery?

I forgot about those paintings in the church until I rewatched the scene. You mean the painting that has Eva in it? I like that one. Whichever of the four images you want, all of them are in the MGS3 Premium Package book. I don't know where to find scans of it.

Thanks for uploading this video. I was scouring Ebay for Yoji Shinkawa books and was thinking of picking up the first book shown in the video... After having watched the video though due to the price I think I might pass on it for now... :X still really nice work by him, as always!

Thanks for watching! The Uniqlo event looked fun to attend. So many fans. Lucky you got your art book signed. :) I got a pack of the MGS cards before finding the books and I like the acetate. I paid way too much for it, but I lucked out by getting the Kojima card. The rest of the art is in the books so the Kojima card is unique. Plus there's the silver foil logo. How many cards do you have? Do you plan to get the other MGS art books?

Thank you for this art book collection post. Glad to see there are fans out there that can enjoy MGS art. I have been looking for this particular piece of art in MGS4, but it is MGS3 artwork. In the game when Eva is talking to Old Snake at the Church, there are 2 pictures on the wall a bunch of MGS characters. I have found 2 of the pictures and am still in search of the last picture. Do you have any idea where i can find it? I want it as my background on my Computer

Sweet collection! We should compare notes. I'm going after a couple others here shortly. Before I used to collect the Godzilla:Millennium series production books. They contain concept art and production notes and more. One of mine from Godzilla final wars has yoji's artwork in it he did for the film.

@TheQuietDoom46 Nice pun. :) Yep, the healing tracks are a great listen in-game, so I wanted to put them in here. I don't have the HD Collection at the moment, but I plan to get it. From what I've seen of both the North American and Japanese versions of the HDC all the books I have cover all the art in the HDC books. Of course, the HDC book compiles all the art so that's convenient compared to flipping through a foot high stack of books.

I assumed the first book was always printed in bilingual. For such an old title, eBay might be your best way to find it. It'll be pricey, but at least you'd get it. The first song is a favorite of mine. It's called "Old Metal Gear" from the MGS3 OST.

@Piotrek1985 Oh, the normal book. That one has a slightly rough texture after the plastic cover is taken off. On a different note, I've heard the first printing of the MGS1 book had some misspellings in the contents menu. The most amusing is "publishity". I've never seen this so I can't tell if this misspelling is a rumor. Can anyone who has this version confirm if that's true?

The first MGS book is going to be very expensive no matter where you go, but the easiest place to find it would be eBay. If you're ok with a smaller size book you could get the Trilogy book which does use the same content from the MGS1 book. That book doesn't have commentary, though.

The book is called The Art of Metal Gear Solid: The Original Trilogy. It's from the Premium Edition of the HD collection.

Most of the books are pretty old and they just keep climbing in prices. :( Used bookstores may have them. Private sellers are another way. Sometimes a seller might want to clear stock and aren't going to charge crazy prices.

1.5 has the same art. It's updated to include some Twin Snakes sketches. Differences: some sketches from original series, the interview Shinkawa has is with Enki Bilal instead of Yoshitaka Amano, and the color scheme in the profile pages is red instead of green. Codec screens are in the profiles which is why I mention it. Strange move to swap colors, but that's what happened. I considered getting 1.5, but it'd be like buying the same book twice so I passed on it.

If you could choose would you rather have the Art of Metal Gear Solid (1), Art of Metal Gear Solid (1.5) which is $20 more expensive, or The Art of Metal Gear Solid Trilogy (With the game and music album from the premium edition) which is $50 more expensive? I can only pick one art book so I'm torn between these three

I've seen play-asia.com import MGS books. The promo books are easier to find in auctions since those were really limited and normal shops don't typically carry those. In North America, there's also a book from the Legacy Collection. It's more of a history book than art, but I like it. Lots of ad posters from MGS to the just released MGS5 Ground Zeroes. & it's in English. :) GZ (of course) has an art book in its Premium Package.

pointclicky Yeah, my only art books are from the limited editions of Peace Walker, the MGS HD Collection, and the one which comes with the Legacy Collection. The GZ Premium Package isn't available here, though (is it?). Anyways, thanks for the info. I'll definitely check out that Play Asia site! PS: If anyone needs help on Peace Walker HD, just let me know. I don't get tired of playing that game, and my equipment is way overpowered, mwahaha.
