The only games they needed to play to understand are MGS3 and Peace Walker, but the whole thing is hard to understand unless you start with like Metal Gear Solid and play all main entries. To COMPLETELY understand everything, one should start with Metal Gear which can be accessed through the menu on MGS3. TL;DR: Don't jump into a random Metal Gear game; play them in order and actually pay attention. It's worth it.
On the subject of the voice, I actually quite like it. In MGS4 Solid Snake and Big Boss had two different voices, which means that at some point Big Boss's voice diverges greatly from Solid Snake's signature voice. I always felt the voice change was a way of bridging the gap between the two voices.
Strelok Kosugi Apparently they wanted an experienced on screen actor so they could do realistic motion capture for the game. That's the official explanation anyway.

His voice is iconic for the character, but whenever I hear his voice I think of Solid Snake, not Big Boss. If they ever changed the voice of Solid Snake THEN I would be angry, but The fact is that Big Boss is NOT Solid Snake. They are two completely different people who have lived two completely different lives and have completely different values. The games have always tried to convey that the two are very different and I feel it only makes sense for their voices to reflect that. Maybe Kojima felt the same way and that brought about his decision to Change Big Boss's voice for MGS 4. Having Big Boss and Solid Snake speak with the same voice always made me feel like they were the same person even though the games were always telling me that they weren't. With this new voice, Big Boss finally has his own identity completely distinct from Solid Snake and so long as Keifer brings his best to the performance then the character of Big Boss will be better for it.
If you watch it, Fraser said he stopped after two, so he never knew Big Boss yet. Not his fault, it's Metal Gear and they are both named Snake at some point. It can get confusing to someone who hasn't played all of them.
I am an MGS fan but people defending this games length have to be mindless fanboys. the game is 1-3 hours and if its longer its only because you are making it longer. side missions, collectables, doing different play styles etc etc but that can be done with any game and it will make the game longer. this is the equivalent to them selling the tanker mission from MGS 2 or the virtuous mission from MGS 3 for $30-$40.
I agree with you as I am an MGS fan but one thing I have to say is that the MGS2 Tanker mission was a demo disc on Zone of The Enders. Maybe I'm reading your comment wrong though.

I agree to a point. While I definitely see it that way, I'm willing to believe that there is some circumstance where people would like this game so calling them "mindless fanboys" is just kind of unfair. I love the MGS series, MGS3 is one of my favorite games actually, and even I will say that it is incredibly disappointing that Kojima went down this path for this game which COULD have just been a demo/prologue that was free/$5.00. However I think Fraser's reaction of yelling at everyone during the videos does more harm to the show itself than anything else. This is another case where Fraser really should have done research and a trial period before playing the game on the show (Assassin's Creed, Silent Hill, Dark Souls) instead of playing it, getting incredibly angry at it, and then proceeding to have yelling contests in the RU-vid comments/twitter. This is especially harming since the show appears at least on the surface to be centered around optimism, with the title and the happy and inviting thumbnails and whatnot. Again I have to state that I am NOT defending this game, hell I'm not even arguing Fraser's points! I just think the show should be more about the optimistic outlook on games, even if they are bad, if they want the show to prosper more. I love this show, I've watched it since fucking 2010 and even if Fraser responds saying I'm a horrible troll and bans me for disliking a small aspect of the show when all I was trying to add some constructive criticism I will still watch it most likely watch it. There can be more than one Ground Zero. Ground Zero is the epicenter of an explosion or event, so if there is more than one explosion, each has their own Ground Zero. If three bombs are dropped, you'll have 3 Ground Zeros.
True that. But the thing is, it's the prologue, not the demo. Pretty close, but not the same. One thing that angers me (a fan of the series) is that people complain about the story and length of the game, despite all the warnings that the game was the $30 prologue that is placed in the middle of the series chronologically. This whole game was very obviously done for the fans, and if I was someone who had never played the series before, I wouldn't buy this game because I would have seen that it is just the prologue of a story that I wouldn't understand. But yet, people who should know that stuff buy and play the game, and then bitch about everything about it.

Captain Video Blaster Well for Many the story of a game can be fun as well. My favorite games are ones with really engrossing and detailed stories. For me the cut scenes of Metal Gear Solid 4 worked with the gameplay to make the whole experience that much more enjoyable.
Taking it for what it is, I was quiet happy with my purchase. Though I do wish it was longer. I remember downloading the Peace Walker Japanese demo for the PSP and playing it for weeks. I think if you love the franchise a lot and you play it the way it was meant to be played you'll defiantly get your monies worth. I'll refrain from giving my full opinion on Ground Zeros so far until The Phantom Pain comes out, but so far I like what I'm seeing and I'd totally buy it for the PS4 once I get one and I can't wait to play it some more today on my PS3.

MetalGearN30 Why does it matter whether or not Joe talks about the shitty comments or not? And sure, maybe it isn't a special or unique case that these guys (fraser in particular) get hateful comments, but that doesn't make it any less shitty or frustrating to see. In some cases it's easy for people to ignore it like Joe (I assume, don't really watch his stuff to know for sure), while others find it difficult to ignore hateful comments, like Totalbiscuit and Fraser. And from what I've seen if you have trouble ignoring it, it's better to openly deal with these comments rather than sit in silence. People like Totalbiscuit and Phil Fish have essentially had meltdowns because of this, so I think Fraser openly discussing and joking about it is probably the best for him. Hopefully you can understand that, even if you don't like it.

I'm not sure if you guys will see this but the reason Chico is freaked out when big boss came is because big boss is the same one who tortured him and paz, metal gear ground zeroes is a distorted dream sequence/programming for venom snake during his coma after the helicopter explosion He can view himself as multiple people, he was burned during the helicopter crash, he is skullface However in ground zeroes skullface represents big boss, big boss planted the bomb in paz in the blacksite to send her back to zero to kill him And when they returned to MSF they saw cipher attacking the base and they escaped, the other helicopter which was tailing them fired a rocket on them and they fell The bomb in paz was extracted when they knew MSF was gone but well... We never saw big boss's descent to villany, but from peace walker it began, recruiting child soldiers, building a metal gear and obtaining a nuke to dominate the world. Then his darkness emerged in ground zeroes and mgsv, you saw what he did to paz and Chico. You notice in the trailer big boss turns to venom then to skullface, it's all questionable and connected.
I remember you guys were loving on this when the first trailer came out lol. I thought it was pretty great, but yeah, it was short as fuck. And people were complaining about Revengeance being short....
They did show the story, in the previous games. Which are very good btw. 11 pages of sumery isnt that bad spanning over 2 games. Plus alternativly there's backstory in the tapes. BTW to other people these guys could have pressed x at any time duing 8.30-11.00.

Retro radio They really don't deserve more success though. It's not all about playing the new games. It's about the quality of commentary they sound like condescending assholes throughout and maybe they aren't but they sound like they are and this makes the commentary hard to watch. Look at game grumps they play boring and broken games all the time and they even suck ass sometimes with great games but their commentary is what people come for stories, jokes, and just stupid shit to make u laugh sometimes. In short these guys just got lucky and started at the time this form of entertainment became popular when in truth they deserve no more then 1,000-10,000 subscribers

I agree with Fraser on many levels, especially regarding the price. It is ludicrous Konami would do this to get easy money out of the fans pockets. However, I would be one of those people if I had a console. The reason for that is: I am simply a huge fan of the MGS series. Played MGS 1 to 4 and really want to play Peace Walker. Hell, I would even pay for the beginning of MGS 1, 2, 3 and 4 if I could play a tease of a MGS before the release of the main game. Why? Because the MGS games are the only games that I can actually replay and get an enormous amount of fun. I would probably play and replay each mission a total of 8 hours and get the satisfaction I would get with any other game. In fact, I would probably get more satisfaction in playing and replaying one mission in the MGS series, than any other full priced game (except for really amazing games like The Last Of Us). The gameplay in every MGS game is outstanding and always revolutionary, and by the looks of it, MGSV Ground Zeroes is no exception. I know it's wrong, I know it shouldn't be like this, and I know Konami is successfully doing what they intened: getting easy money. But the last awesome MGS game I played was MGS4 and that was back in 2008. Even though I am angry about the price, it wouldn't stop me from playing and replaying constantly. But of course, this is just me, I can only speak for myself and yes, I am definitely crazy. The reason I know this is because I have watched on youtube every thing you can do in the game for the past couple of days. Not every mission, every thing, including unlockables and easter eggs. Like I said, I am definitely crazy. Also, regarding the extreme gore Fraser mentioned, I actually enjoy this approach Kojima is taking. The melodrama with silliness was a cool mix, but threw me off sometimes, especially with MGS2 (my least favourite MGS game). This time around, it seems it's going to be more serious, like The Last Of Us was with cannibalism. Kojima is taking a risk, especially by showing the scenes, and it definitely intrigued me. But again, this is just me and I enjoy seeing movies or games that push the bar constantly, even if they don't work out in the best way (which is not the case in this game, in my opinion). I even watched an interview with Kojima talking about Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain and he was really humble and understanding. Not like David Cage at all, so that kind of surprised me. People say that it was Konami that pushed Kojima in selling Ground Zeroes, though I guess Kojima could have said no. So yeah, I'm angry like Fraser is, but I would still buy the game. I guess I just really like the MGS games. Also, the Kiefer Sutherland voice doesn't bother me that much. I definitely prefer David Hayter doing Solid Snake's and Big Boss's voice (like he did in MGS3 and Peace Walker), but I think Sutherland did a fantastic job. Hopefully, Hayter does return to do Solid Snake's voice at least, but I don't think that is going to happen.
Fraser, please make sure to play MGS3 first before moving on to MGS5: The Phantom Pain. It's a lot less convoluted than MGS2 and the most emotionally involving of the series. It's really "The Empire Strikes Back" of the series in terms of connecting all the games together.

Personally, I don't consider replaying a game differently, playing it a certain way, or 10 minute extra missions adds to it's play-time. If Fraser, who repeatedly failed and screwed up while playing, can finish a game he bought for $40 in under 2 hours, than it has poor value. It's the same for paying $15 dollars for a book that is only 30 pages long or paying for a movie that's only 15 minutes long.
Funny thing is that everyone who includes the side missions toward the completion time on this game seems to forget that ALL modern titles come with side missions and goals, that are rarely contributed towards the completion time of the game. If we are speaking in relative terms (which with video games, why wouldn't we be?) then this game is, side-missions included, still only about 20% the length of any of it's peers. And that doesn't even take into consideration the multiplayer modes that add practically unlimited replay-ability to a title that even super-heavy story driven games like Last of Us include.
I've watched your videos for years now and I've just realized the very low view count on them. That's quite sad considering the great fun content you guys provide. Perhaps people just don't like watching games on a tilted screen in the background? I could understand how some teens and children would get annoyed by seen you take up half the screen of the video. At the same time the show would be weird to me if you didn't show yourselves. Also you shouldn't have canceled the Awesome Video Games series; That shit was cash.

13:18 - I dont want to sound like a PC purist but every time when someone speaks of the MGS graphics I roll my eyes. They are good, sure, but not beautifull and certainly not the best in the market. I dont understand why everyone jaws drop at the really good, but not beautifull graphics.
not good... well for next gen no... but this game IS NOT NEXT GEN, yes next gen has sharper texture and 60 fps wich is totaly worth it but the game looks 90 percent the same on current gen, mgsV was mostly targeted to current gen and ofcourse added the bonus of sharper texture and 60fps, its pretty much the same as naughty dog did with the last of us and rockstar is doing with GTAV: taking advantage of next gen bonus and upgrade resolution and fps, but they arent going to creat seperate more realistic graphics just for the next gen versions, that would be a waste of time and money... so this game is graphics wise impresive and in my opinion the best looking game on current gen (ps3 and 360)

It makes sense to change Big Boss's voice if a young Solid Snake appears in MGS5. It would be weird to have both characters voiced by the same actor. I'm hopeful that David Hayter will stay as the voice of Solid Snake.
I like this game, had a lot of fun with the side missions, but it's ridiculous that it's $40. If it was at the very least 3 hours at the bare minimum for the main story + the side missions it would be acceptable I suppose, but the fact it adds very little to the progression of the narrative bothers me. We get a lot of backstory, if you go through all of the little details, but I feel like I just learned more about peacewalker and didn't play a new game at all. Looking forward to Phantom Pain though. The controls are fantastic, the graphics are great, the story looks amazing as always in Metal Gear (In it's own awesome way), but overall I would really give the game 5/10 because of the main length alone. Being generally upset to see a title screen so early when I knew the game was supposed to be short was probably the most frustrating feeling I have ever experienced with video games.
i know that frash hasn't played snake eater but the reason david hayter isn't voicing big boss is because big boss is not the snake that is voiced by hayter ;)
Solid Snake is a clone of Big Boss, and I am sure that Hayter has the acting range to voice an older version of Snake, especially being now older himself. Hayter absolutely could have played Big Boss.
apparently konami says they wanted a guy who can do a voice of a 40 year old snake and i'm guessing hayter wasn't that guy so yeah hayter isn't gonna voice snake in Phantom Pain either :(

Fact is, they wanted a celebrity name because Hideo thinks that it legitimizes the medium, and Konami thinks it will bring in more sales.

I really want to enjoy the MGS series. The problem is that I suck at stealth. Due to that, I never got into the games before MGSV. Since it's gonna be free on Xbox next month, I decided to give Ground Zeroes a try, and I still suck at it. I'm passable if I have my silenced AR. But as soon as my one and only silencer breaks, I'm fucked. I suck at coming up behind people, and without a wall knock or rock throw to bring single enemies to you, I just get caught almost instantly.
If I skip the ad after 5 seconds, do they still get the money. I turn my adblocker off for them but want to make sure they are getting paid when the skip button comes up.
Fraser, you have to play the game completely correct and the way I would play it. You're not allowed to derp around, have fun or experiment. And you are not allowed to make any mistakes regarding characters, story or lore. Adhere to these conditions and I will not downvote you. /fanboylogic

6 hours into the game and I just finished all missions. I still want to play more, so I'm kind of conflicted about the whole issue. There is easily enough value for $30 here but I also see publishers like EA abusing this concept.
I can't wait for companies like Square-Enix release a Kingdom Hearts 3 demo for $30-40... Guess this will be the new method for companies to milk more money out of its fans. If your smart with your money go rent the game from Red Box for $2. If you really want to own the game wait 1~ month and you'll see it selling for $10-15.

That's not why they replaced Hayter. But it's weird that Frash is saying he won't get over the switch yet he only played one game. I mean I get day one fans being mad after playing every single game like I have even though I got over it he was "pretty good" (lol) but a one time player? He didn't listen to the first thing Kaz wanted him to do here that's just poor attention span and trying to be a clown. To hopefully end the debate and confusion on Sutherland being Snake in MGSV, let me say this. He is the new voice of Snake, NOT Solid Snake. Snake is Big Boss and Solid Snake is a clone of Snake. Hayter played Solid Snake and did an amazing job. This is a different character. Sutherland is someone who sounds like an older, more evil Solid Snake and that makes sense. It is like Roger Craig Smith being Batman for Arkham Origins rather than Kevin Conroy. Conroy probably could do a young Batman but it worked for the tone of the game to get a different actor. Fanboys will always complain about what is different but just like how I welcomed Smith as a young Batman, I welcome Sutherland as the father of Solid Snake.

gsonic55 They're hidden around the base. Interrogating guards helps. If you're impatient that I'm getting with the XOF badges you can just get a guide. Fair warning, the tapes get increasingly twisted. Skullface may be the worst (not in quality) villain in the series, and that's counting Volgin.
I blocked hayter's terrible big boss voice from peace walker, maybe that's why he wasn't in ground zeroes/phantom pain and they made up the whole Kiefer voice/motion capture deal.
I adore Metal Gear. It's my favorite video game franchise of all time. I've been following it since MGS1 on my PSX since I was 15 and played every single installment since... That being said, as much as I really enjoyed the gameplay of Ground Zeroes and the re-playability of the side-ops, this isn't worth the asking price. This is a DEMO, and not even a satisfying one. No boss fight, no climatic gameplay scene to wrap things up, nothing. It was just a dead stop and me feeling like I just wasted my time on a flaccid story campaign. I will continue to support this series, but now this I'll have a worse taste in my mouth than MGS4.
I know this is a little late but its a bit of interesting information none the less. The song "Here's to You" was written for two immigrants that were wrongly accused and executed. In the original ending of Metal Gear Solid 4, Snake and Otacon were going to be executed as war criminals.

People can defend this all they want but Angry Joe and Fraser have such a valid point - take away that this is a MSG game, what if COD or Assassin's Creed did something like this? The issue is many companies will see this and follow suit, despite this game and price is "Meant to be for die-hard fans". Its disheartening and scary for the future of gaming.
