glenn tipton shouldn’t be an honorable mention, he needs to be on the list. sabbath brought the heavy, priest brought the metal. glenn also brought the neoclassical vibes that would later be everywhere in 80’s metal and beyond closer to the forefront. his solos alone in painkiller, beyond the realms of death, ram it down, and the defenders of the faith album should reserve him a spot on the list. glenn is one of the most underrated and under-appreciated guitarists of all time.

@Andy Don Uh-huh, and what have they done recently, besides encourage every mid-2000s metal act to use that stupid vocal static effect, even ones like Dokken who should've kept it clean? So they WERE groundbreaking, 40 years ago. Iron Maiden were part of that same heavy metal hurricane, practically defining the non-Satanic section of heavy metal iconography and mythos, but people will gladly give them shit for their recent mediocre (in my opinion; my opinion is more positive than many non-hardcore Maiden listeners) output. Metallica doesn't get a free pass, either. Being great 40 years ago doesn't mean they're still great, nor does it mean people should look to them for inspiration. And in case you didn't notice, other metal genres like black, death, industrial and even some so-called "hair metal" bands like W.A.S.P. have since surpassed them for aggression and lyrical content without sacrificing melody. In fact, by virtue of "St. Anger" being a thing, W.A.S.P. are objectively better on account of the fact they never released a dud. Also, "One" IS overrated. A dreary trudge from beginning to end. You want to see how to write a song about heavy themes without dragging the energy out back and disemboweling it? "Kiss of Death" by Dokken, "Conquistadors" by Running Wild, or the ENTIRE "Crimson Idol" album by W.A.S.P. Hell of a lot more listenable than "One" ever was.
@marcthedashergd6321
@marcthedashergd6321 3 года назад
And st. Anger is massively hated. The problems on the album that they say are lack of solos, the snare, and production quality. Those have no longer been an issue for me since the album grew on me and I am used to the snare. The problem of St. Anger in my opinion is the lyrics, but I don't care because I only focus on the instruments. And people missed the point of St. Anger. It is not even made for the fans. It is made for metallica as an album where they release all of their anger towards all the things they have gone through like Burton's death, Jason Newstead leaving the band, napster leaking their unreleased song, people saying that they sold out, and more. It doesn't matter if they like the album or not, as the important thing is that metallica moved on from their problems and came back to their thrash roots in 2008.

I definitely think Ritchie Blackmore should have been on the list. Child in Time has one of the greatest solos ever, Smoke on the Water is the first riff every guitarist learns, and Stargazer practically invented symphonic metal.

Yep, definitely! And Rainbow was classic heavy metal on their first 3 albums. Purple's In Rock and Machinehead are also classic 70's heavy metal. Hard rock is Aerosmith or AC/DC, quite different.

I was thinking who I would have on a list, and I put Scott Ian on it. Not for Anthrax, but for SOD. Take a listen of SOD's live at Budokan. The riffs are just fun brutal metal candy designed for mosh pit ultra violence. There is something very pure and to the point about them. Nothing super technical, but still satisfying.

I’d say the fact that John Sykes played in Tygers Of Pan Tang, a New Wave Of British Heavy Metal band, and on Thin Lizzy's "metal" album Thunder and Lightning, as well as his style would qualify him as a heavy metal guitarist.

To be fair, Kirk Hammett wrote important riffs for three of their biggest songs: "Creeping Death": He wrote the Die Die Die breakdown riff. It came from an Exodus song called "Die By My Hand". "Master of Puppets": the pre-chorus riff ("Come crawling faster!") was different on the studio album than the riff tapes version, but he originated it. "Enter Sandman": Originally, the single notes and power chords alternated one-and-one. It was Lars's idea to make it three-and-one, the riff that every Guitar Center dreads. But, yes, Papa Het should have been on the list.

Well, with EVH and Iommi in there, there must have been room for Angus Young. Another player who influenced a whole new wave of players and a new sub genre was Yngwie, because of whom millions of people picked up their guitars for the first time (and I think even more quit playing). And the previously said pretty much stands for Kai Hansen too. He literally invented Power metal. But most of all, (as it stands for Iommi) the whole genre wouldn't exist without Blackmore. His influence is maybe more on guitarists and technique then on the metal itself, but there are still a few of us who remember the feeling and the urge to grab a guitar when as kids we heard the Smoke... and Burn and... And yeah, totally agreed on Hetfield vs Kirk and King vs Hanneman issue and I would ad that Smith has much more of an influence on IM sound then Dave and thus on a genre itself. Great video!

I wish Ken Hickey from TON would've been on the honorable mentions, but Type O is kinda one you have to know about to know how they're like. I also know that Type O was mostly Peter Steele's baby, and he wrote majority of the riffs, but Ken wrote the majority of their hit songs riffs. Like Black No.1. I think it was obvious to me, especially after I saw him do the Loudwire Favorite Riffs video, that they found real inspiration in riffs when Peter found his inspirations and then they'd sit down and do the riff writing together. Obviously Black No.1 was the one that got me heavily into Type O when I first was digging deeper into some more types of metal subgenres, like Gothic Metal, but my personal favorite of theirs is actually Out of The Fire (Kane's Song).

Not gonna lie this is probably a great thing to you, but I literally just thought you were blasting a Dream Theater song in the intro. Also: I was pleased with this list, I'm quite a different opinion haver in that I classify most of the 80's shred guys Like Van Halen etc as "Hair Metal" and I'd even stand up for calling WhiteSnake that too, but other than that I was happy with the list even though in my very biased opinion I think of Dimebag as the #1, but also I definitely have to agree that the part of James not being on there over Kirk was a bit unsettling. Sure Kirk can sweep pick and shred way better, but without James' riffs, we wouldn't have a Metallica to begin with.

My favorite songs/riffs from Anthrax are the John Bush years. The songs just seem to be written & produced better. The Sound of White Noise is definitely one of my top 10 albums of all time. (That is when the became more interesting.) & it still holds up today.
