Jason, so happy to watch this. I was in Kyoto back in May for our honeymoon, and I snuck off a few times while my wife relaxed at the hotel, and I found both of these stores you visited. I remember exploring the streets of Kyoto armed with google maps. Was lovely to retrace my steps through your own trip and it brings back special memories of our own trip. Look forward to the next part. Thanks - Matt

I loved Japan, I was there maybe 6 years ago. My wife went there for 5 days for work so the kids and I went too. It was awesome walking around town and going to the mall. Then they all came down with a 104 fever, including my 1 year old. So most of the trip was spent with me, the only not sick one, taking care of the rest of the family :/ Definitely need to go back.

I studied abroad in Japan at a university about 30 minutes between Kyoto and Osaka, and this video hit me with nostalgia harder than it should have. I would go to downtown Kyoto all the time whenever I had a late night to myself, and I always went to the shopping streets and Nishiki Market. Also a new Nintendo store opened in Kyoto while I was in Japan and it's a lot bigger than the Osaka one. There is also two BookOffs within the Sanjo area. One infront of Sanjo Station, and one inside this department store. Highly recommend the Sanjo Station BookOff if you are interested in retro game pickups. There's also an retro arcade nearby called A-cho that has a bunch of CPS and Neo Geo fighting games, as well as a bunch of SHMUP games, three different variations of Tetris, and a Typing of the Dead cabinet. If you ever go back to Japan, give A-cho and BookOff a chance. Also they have a flea market outside of the Heian Shrine in Kyoto. Highly recommend if you are looking for import games.

Love your Japan series. Visiting and game hunting would be a dream, but the language barrier is intimidating for me. Obviously having someone bilingual sherpa you through the environment would solve this problem, but how much of an issue do you think it would be for your average American?

@ericng5707 11 месяцев назад
If all you were doing was going to the well-known tourist areas like Akihabara in Tokyo or Den Den Town in Osaka then you'll be fine, since the staff in the shops in those areas (Super Potato, Surugaya, etc.) are used to dealing with tons of foreign tourists. You can see in the video that when he went to the narrow Kyoto Surugaya, nearly every other customer was a foreign tourist as well. Be prepared to pay the tourist prices though. MJR paid nearly 9,000 yen for that copy of Saturn Dodonpachi when it's normally closer to 7,000 yen at non-tourist area stores.

The big tip for ANYONE wanting to find a specific game is ask the store clerk. Preferably show a photo of the game, and they will check the computer or go look on the shelf. As for the toilet seat sign, particularly the one of someone standing on the toilet, that is because in many Asian countries squat toilets (a basin in the ground) are almost universal and the people don't know, or don't want, to sit on western toilets, so stand on them. We have these signs in Australia in areas of high Asian students, and to help prevent it, one "solution" is actually to supply a few squat toilets rather than offend people that they are doing something wrong. While Japan still has squat toilets, most people, especially women, prefer western style. Although, if there's a long queue, and you're busting, a woman might still use a squat if it's vacant. Just ask my mother! I also used one for a poop once, because that's all there was. The bigger shock was actually seeing a toilet door fling open, seeing a guy exit the stall, and then seeing the squat toilet itself.

PRO TIP (when buying Saturn games): grab a bunch of games and pull them off the shelf together and read the spine of the other side of the game. The game name is often in English on the other spine. Some other console games do this too, but it works for almost all Saturn games.
