Growing up in ussr, where all the western music was banned up until late 80s, there was still some underground music scene where ppl would trade or just share records. I remember someone in my class just brought a tape - 10th copy of a copy, it read Headless Children on the spine. I was lucky enough to get hold of it, i listened to it on our soviet made stereoand and it completely turned me around. This album formed my tastes in music. This one and Back in Black by acdc. No one spoke English back then, the record quality was really bad, couldn't make out any lyrics anyways, but the energy in the music, oh man. The best.

Great story! I grew up in the US but extremely poor and have listened to my fair share of 10th generation recorded tapes through a small, busted, piece of junk tape player. I feel like I can relate to your experience. It makes me nostalgic for the old days.

@Richard Spillers all western music, except like mild european like french, italian (basically same communists countries with a bit of capitalism flare) was basically condemned. later, closer to the 90s, it was somewhat lifted, a buncha good russian rock band surfaced, not heavy metal tho, just good rock music.

I discovered WASP when I was 15 years old. I'm 52 now and WASP is still my favorite band. I got to see them open for KISS in 1985, and I've already gotten my tickets to see them at the end of October this year! I can hardly wait! Although Blackie's songwriting has been kind of hit-and-miss (in my opinion) over the years, I've always found something I love on every album. And I've always felt that Blackie has been underrated as a vocalist. I sure do wish he could see it in his heart to bring Chris Holmes back in to the fold for another album.

Calling K.F.D. "kind of an angry album" is a bit of an understatement. That album is a very unsettling listen that leaves you with a strange and somewhat shocked feeling at the end. However, it has some great stuff on it and nobody can accuse them of selling out. It's their most evil, meanest, and heaviest album they ever did. Which was a pleasant surprise as i hadn't cared as much for the more serious, political, and introspective direction Blackie had been heading in. In closing I say that it's too bad that this band didn't get the commercial success that bands like Motley Crue did because W.A.S.P. was a better band with better songs and they partied harder. I believe Blackie is more intelligent than Nikki Sixx although they share some similarities as the respective leaders of their bands. Both of them let their egos get too out of control though and it cost them both. Although ego is what got them their success as well. I love tits.

KFD remains as one of the darkest and angriest albums I’ve listened to. It was born of desperation of the backlash of 80’s rock. However, unlike Dokken’s Shadowlife, Motley Crue’s Generation Swine, or even Warrant’s Belly to Belly, KFD told these 90’s band’s who thought they were dark “hold my beer” and blew everything out of the water with its darkness. I didn’t like it then. But being older, I appreciate it for what it is. Especially “The Horror”. Not WASP’s best, but certainly under-appreciated for the time.

I guess it's never too late but... even though your'e probably young , and i'm 49 and i was like 12 or 13 when i discovered them , i will say this Discovering W.A.S.P. Back then and now is a completely different experience Back then... it's the rise of Metal, Disco has just passed out, Rap is around and getting bigger, Pop is sort of around but not hard enough to be a permanent solution. The world had never had anything seen anything like this before and , oh let's not forget that black hatred was at an all time high (and yes. it's relevant) Metal is unleashed onto the world in a big way , Bands who were broke and desperate started coming out of L.A. like no one's business and it was a fight of ... if you want to make it you had to be good and competition was high Compared to you discovering it today ....... It's all out, there is no competition, you don't really need to try hard then ...... Our music was a double edged sword, on one hand it was fucking awesome on the other hand we were labelled by our parents to be worshipping satan, we were made to feel as if we did something wrong because we had a walkman and a tape Oh thats another thing...... You probably downloaded it we had a BMX Bike, A walkman and a tape (those who went through this will understand) it's about the time we grew up in and the atmosphere of racism at the time combined with the usual growing pains as well as the mentality of the adults at the time and the lack of acceptance of the world towards you You live in a world that is so accepting that having "No specified gender" On a legal form is a real thing and then ... amidst all that , Now 2 other big things happen PMRC comes out and tries to kill Heavy metal , Not realizing it can't be killed and then we have the fucking new wave of british heavy metal which acts as a second wind for metal in short, it was an indescribable experience mate so like i said, it cannot be the same as it once was but..... Better late than never maybe this gives you some sort of insight as to what we went through

My favorite WASP album (even with Crimson Idol coming in a close 2nd) is the Headless Children. It spoke to me when I first bought the cassette. It was, and still is, a masterpiece. I wasn't really into the band before The Headless Children. I don't really know why (because the Filthy 15 was my go-to list for metal... having turned me on to Mercyful Fate... heheh.)

Headless Children was my first WASP LP. Bought it in a record store. I was fascinated by the cover first, but a friend of me came into the store and said that this album is killer. KFD is my third favorite Wasp album. I don't think its an album that anyone can truly understand unless they're in that sort of a dark, hostile, hurt and angry kind of a place. Songs like "Take The Addiction", "U" and "Kill Your Pretty Face" are definitely songs that have a deep connection with me. I wish it didn't have that dated 90s mix on it and was more of a heavy kind of a thing but oh well lol.

Great job! WASP was the real deal, and Blackie's vocals were exceptional. Headless Children was so amazing, I thought the band might transcend the hair mental scene that was coming to an end at the time. In the mid 90's Blackie was reduced to sitting alone in a corner at The Rainbow most nights, unapproachable and lonely. I always found that very sad. The band, and Blackie, deserved much better.
@richardcurtis1912
@richardcurtis1912 2 года назад
After the way he screwed his best band mate out of royalties, took an absolute killer band and turned it into the ‘Blackie Lawless ego show’, he deserved to sit in that corner alone. W.A.S.P. was badass back in the day and Blackie just couldn’t share it with anyone. He had to control everything and that control bought his seat in that corner, as you put it. You can only screw over your friends and band mate’s so many times and you may end up with money, but you may also end up unapproachable and lonely. I don’t think it’s sad at all. He earned it being a selfish asshole and shitting on Chris time and time again publicly. He used Chris to attract fans back and then once again shit all over him again. I owned around 60 W.A.S.P. Albums and import singles back in the day. I was a true fan, but Blackie ruined it. It really sucks too because they had a momentum going and his ego just train wrecked it all. This new tour is going to fail as well. It will sell tickets to diehards and the curious, but let’s be real, he can’t bring it back like he says he’s going too. No Randy, No Chris, No Tony or Stephen he’s got a cover band with a rehashed old idea. Personally with all he did to Chris I hope Blackie falls flat on his face and crawls back underneath whatever rock he’s been hiding under, right where a f**king snake belongs! Get well Chris Holmes!!!

"The Headless Children" is a masterpiece. It saved WASP from the cultural shift of the 90s that other Glam/Hair bands couldn't. And one of the greatest concept albums of all time as a follow up in "The Crimson Idol" helped too. This band is unique in the world. A musical jewel and the pride of heavy metal. The band manages to make us feel the violent emotion of heavy metal and expose our minds in a wild sense. The real man as nature create it. I heard it for the first time on a local rock radio in São Paulo, Brazil in 1993, since then until today the songs are like jewels. The first time in 1993 I heard it I spent weeks trying to find the name of the band, at the time there was no Internet, I went to a local rock merchandise store and found out the name of the band. WASP is one of those bands I like, but will roll up my car windows if one of their songs comes on. Blackie Lawless is an excellent songwriter. I also appreciate you found some more introspective interviews of him as he's often been portrayed as arrogant (and maybe he is).
