I don't even do steel framing, I was just looking for 1 detail that's not very common for a specific situation I might run across running network cable in office buildings - and here I am binge watching warehouse construction like "Oh yeah, so THATS how that gets done!" HAHAHA! I've worked with so many guys that always try to eliminate that one step - like predrilling. "It's got a drill point! REEEEEEE!!!!" ... Same guys that work their asses off just to keep up while I'm working at a nice pace and slowly pulling ahead of them. Tortoise and the Hare!

Cool man, that is great! Did you get the 1 answer you were looking for?
@notsure7874
@notsure7874 2 года назад
@@ConstructionKronies Not exactly. It probably varies based on the type of framing. Some networking channel was showing them drilling a 1 3/8 hole through the top track, but I don't trust them - they did it right by a stud - middle 1/3 or don't do it is my thing, just like an engineered wood "I beam". Also, 1 3/8 hole to get a single network cable down? LOL! I assume it's probably legit in thinwall like I see in office buildings, probably not so much on that 14 ga structural stuff. Still all over your vids though, just had to actually work today!!

Yea you got lucky on the CMU wall giving you that extra length. I’ve framed 40 foot long studs and it honestly sucks They’re so heavy that you can’t just put them up from your bottom guy. You have to literally clamp them to the rails of your lift and go up with them.. It’s scary. This architect definitely had a heart!
@ConstructionKronies
@ConstructionKronies 3 года назад
haha yes man, but it is 14 gauge, we could of done 20 gauge with a structural flange here no prob. Yeah I have a trick with the 40' long studs and the lift. I set them horizontal across the lift, put up to 6 on it depending how heavy they are and then go up half way to swing them in. Cheers man great comment!

When you start your layout which way are the studs supposed to face? And when you start to hang the drywall which side of the layout do you start on do you frame one-way and hang the other or do you start hanging from the side you started the layout from? Please let me know or send me to a link to show me thanks 🤠
@ConstructionKronies
@ConstructionKronies 2 года назад
Yes so as a framer we point the studs hard side out from the way we draw out layout. That tells the boarders what direction to go. It doesn't matter really what side of the wall you start on just be sure to stagger the bevels on either side of the wall and try to do the inside of rooms first to lock in all floaters and make insulating easy. You want long runs to do when insulating it's a pain to jump into every second room with a baker or bench if that makes sense?

Hello Sir, I noticed you used a slotted track for the top and not the bottom track. Is that a standard practice? Can a slotted track be used on the bottom as well?
@ConstructionKronies
@ConstructionKronies Год назад
Good day my man! Yes we use slot track only at the top when the wall goes to under structure. If the walls are below structure we use std track (the same as on the bottom). It is used to achieve 3/4" deflection for contraction and expansion.

Awesome video! Would hex heads work on the studs in the top slip track?
@ConstructionKronies
@ConstructionKronies 3 года назад
they could if you need to have an expansion joint. However if the drywall has to run over the top of the screw the hex heads will make the board stick out. The pan heads are the way to go. I would recommend using number 8's the 10's are just too big,

Hi thanks for the great video! When you secure the studs to the top track, you seem to attach a screw only on the side you're working on. At 28:46 we see you drilling on the back side of the stud closest to the column, but did you do that for all the studs? Thanks again.
@ConstructionKronies

@ConstructionKronies
@ConstructionKronies 3 года назад
Good stuff my man! You can go 20 gauge 6" with a structural flange, 16" o.c. slotted slip track for the top. Add R20 insulation and 5/8" either side an you get your 1 hour fire separation. Make sure to install carrying channel every 4'. Lots of tips for a first time high wall but be sure to have good leather gloves. Ask me any questions along the way!
@johnhulbert4154
@johnhulbert4154 11 месяцев назад
Stupid question, direction of the stud when laying out. If your laying out left to right the hard side would be on the left side right???
@ConstructionKronies
@ConstructionKronies 11 месяцев назад
The hard side will be on the right. Think of it as an arrow pointing in the direction you laid out. It tells the drywaller where to start. Laying out left to right the hard side on the right. Always screw the soft side in first in the bevels to avoid the stud popping out of square.

@ConstructionKronies 2 года назад
That's super heavy duty, you will have no issues with that wall. You could go 2' o.c. with that big of stud. The height of this wall here was 30' I think. 8' of CMU and then 25' of wall if I remember correctly.

@tunmiseolarinde950 Год назад
Curious to know how much a framing like this cost? I just did a 205 ft wall and 12ft high and I feel like I under charged.
@ConstructionKronies
@ConstructionKronies Год назад
Sure yes man, for that I would charge $9.50 / linear foot for steel, 0.40 / square foot for drywall, 0.45/sf for tape plus $2 / lf for corner bead or trimtek, 0.25/sf for insulation and 0.25 / lf for any strapping. Add a couple hours $45/hr for layout, cleanup. If it's farther than 30 minutes from my house I charge fuel and I will add any extras in like fasteners (especially Hilti shots very expensive) and if I have to go get any material it's a $250 flat rate. These are all in Canadian prices.

What would be the screw pattern for a 16' high wall (using stand ups) with 2' centers, using 1/2" drywall?
@ConstructionKronies
@ConstructionKronies 2 года назад
Go 6-8" in the bevels, 4 screws in the bottom track, 12-16" in the field and remember to keep your top screws at least 1" down from the bottom of the slotted track to allow for deflection.

These will work here: bit.ly/HeavygaugeFramingScrews You can go #8 or #10. If your having trouble getting them through you can predrill them. If you think you can get away with how far out the heads stick out you can also go with hex head self drillers, 5/16" or 1/4". I like the wafer head screws myself. let me know if you have anymore questions!

what do you do if the steel column is out by 1" what do you do to get 16"on center all the way through?
@ConstructionKronies
@ConstructionKronies 2 года назад
What I do is make a mark with a framing square (draw a line out from the 16" center mark) on the last and first past the column. Then draw my tape from that and then I always laser up the first center to the top track in each bay. Columns can be often out, just keep your steel straight and shoot a stud to both sides. Does that answer your question?

1 hour wall needs 5/8" type x 1 layer each side. You can 3-5/8" and bigger, your choice. You can also insulate optional. The steel doesn't matter for the rating just the drywall. I'd always suggest 16" on center but you can also go 2'.
