They took their shots at Jason in this doc. But, he was right, they were a band that was messed up but didn't want to deal with anything and that was unacceptable to him.
@@alejandrovallejo6763 that is completely wrong how you think that and that other think that is actually, incorrect. They have cared about bass every album, James made sure Bass and Jason were something you can hear on Black Album is enough to show how much of a pin head you are.
@@kylebatteson9572 yeah I dont think Rob Trujio was the greatest bassist selection because he cant write music as well as Jason Newsted could and Cliff was also a pretty good bassist.
He just came in unprepared, played battery & For whom the bell tolls, kicked everyones ass and got the place. He is Roberto Agustín Miguél Santiago Samuel Trujillo Veracruz and he KNOWS HOW TO ROCK!!!
Lmao, exactly. One was flat, another was sharp. Like WTF? You're auditioning for Metallica, at least tune up before you play. Just ask James to hit his low E and you're gold.
honestly i thought chris wyse's sound was pretty solid, especially the heavy part. idk what the hell the dinky bass sound from the one bass player was though, i laughed my ass off at that
I've always thought that was a bit of a dig at Jason, as he was the only one to have played it with the band since Cliff. Must've still been a bit raw, I guess. Rob raised the bands level from the minute he walked into the studio though.🤘
@@keithmcculloch9914 Maybe not but his sound does. When they showed the clip of the various players on for whom the bell tolls Rob's bass sound was the only one that fit properly.
@@k1dn1ce76 It's a fake scenario Metallica created, or Lars.... no way professional musicians would sound like that... they probably took the worst shots and the best Robert shots just to make it seem obvious.... I'd prfer Twiggy because he has good song writing....
I think Rob was a perfect fit and always have. He’s very passionate, physically active on stage, and very proficient with his playing. He’s also very dedicated to Metallica, and that’s straight out of James’ mouth. That’s something that you just can’t buy, it’s either there, or it’s not. Rock on Roberto!
I think the big thing there was the fact he didn't look overwhelmed by any of it. You can't have a 'new' guy that has to figure out how to get his playing up to a level that can handle the material. Rob was there from the second he walked in the room. Plus, you have to have a positive, laid back, take-it-as-it-comes attitude to work with James and Lars.
@@jameshinton429 Honestly, Kirk and Rob seem super laid back. I feel that way about James too except for he gets worked up when Lars starts to get under his skin. Everyone knows Lars is the worst musician in the band but I think his attitude rubs me the wrong way a lot of the time and brings negative energy. It makes you wonder what the band would be like if there was a chill drummer that can actually play
That's what I thought too. He didn't seem "starstruck". Had he not been chosen, he'd have shrugged his shoulders and gone back to doing what he was doing. The guy is so humble. He's now their longest serving bassist.
@@Kriegsbeil5577 take into consideration he was playing for Ozzy, he was already on the biggest stage, he prolly went to Metallica because his first band was Suicidal Tendencies, I imagine he likes thrash over slower stuff
Like I said on another video, this is how you make a great first impression during an audition. You walk in, they ask what song you want to try, and you suggest one of their fastest and hardest songs in their library...WITHOUT A PICK!
LOL , 5:39 "He was the first guy who didn't look like he was struggling..." that's because he's as good as Cliff was. Trujillo is defiantly the same caliber bass player; a little different direction though. He even looks like the same person as he was twenty years ago plus a few pounds. They are LUCKY to have him. He's much cooler than they are.
Honestly just based on looks Trujillo looks like he fits with the band, but his playing style, tone and ability to just deliver an amazing performance just hands down makes him perfect for Metallica.I was actually listening to a recent performance of "One" and when they went into the whole heavy fast part it was some of the heaviest shit i've ever heard.
I def love Rob's bass more. So groovy, deep, and what's most important to me - it fits with FWTBT best, cos you hear it but not like an instrument out of place.
rob definately fucking nailed his audition. all the others sounded like crap, and rob was the only one who was getting into the groove and actually feeling the music. he's fuckin awesome.
Trujillo is the real deal. He plays classical guitar, played upright bass with Nickel Creek (modern bluegrass instrumental). Also has a bad ass presence of his own. He can play fat and refined bass lines. Clearly the best.
I didn't know him before this film. Since then I've learned a lot about him. He's got class and a good heart. Just his devotion to Jaco Pastorius and the Bass of Doom makes him the man in my book.
@@ytr3488 Billy Sheehan is an unbelievable bassist, but nobody can replace Cliff, just like nobody could replace Billy Sheehan and other fantastic musicians. Everyone is an individual and their skills are unique to each and every one of them. Nobody is on the same exact level of skill in the music world. That's how it should be, too.
@@FatalChaz33 Jason is an unbelievably great bassist who will never get the credit he is due. But like he said in an interview, all the Metallica songs that get air play (Enter Sandman, One), his name is on and he gets a check for so he's cool with things.
Robert might be the highest pedigree a metal bassist has ever achieved in history. Dude played on four greatly influential bands/supergroups and as longest serving Metallica bassist, he's the one with biggest reach too. An eternal legend. Cliff was a bright flame that burned fast and wowed us all in the 80s, but Rob was the one that convinced me to purchase a bass finally in the 2000s. God bless Rob and may he stick around!
Glad they picked Rob. If Pepper has worked out we’d never have had the music we had from Down and later CoC. Pepper is way too talented to be just a bass player and live under the enormous ego that is Lars Ulrich
Since we know the outcome it is hard to be impartial...but Rob truly did stand out as the perfect fit. His bass tone with those fingers is monsterous!!!
just because you play with a pic doesn't mean you suck bro. sometimes people prefer picks. when i went to MI for a seminar billy sheehan told us that you have to be strategic, for certain situations sometimes its appropriate to use a pick just to be able to cut through the guitars just a bit. just keep doing what you're doing man i thought i'd back you up on this one.
Rob was the right choice... but I still often wonder about Scott Reeder (his work on The Circus Leaves Town album is fantastic!); I really like his tone here, totally different from anything stereotypically "Metallica" sounding... might've lead to a bit more experimental-Metallica stuff, which has always been my fave!
I love how maodest Trujillo is, even though he knew in the back of his mind the whole time that he could wring those Metallica songs out. When they asked him 4 or 5 he should've said, "It doesnt fucking matter!"
4:39 “If Cliff Burton showed up today, maybe he wouldn’t be the guy either.” ~ Lards “All this time I’ve been away, Lards, and you’re STILL NOT THE GUY! Where’s Lombardo at?”
Well out of all the other bass players, Rob was the only one that had the proficiency from his previous projects, like Suicidal, and Infections Grooves. The other bass players were from NIN, Kyuss, The Cult, Jane's Addiction and Pepper is from COC but he plays guitar. Of course Rob is going to be the best one out of those. If they got a bunch of other bassists that are more accustomed to the faster tempos and more complex parts, I wonder how Rob would've stacked up.
Chris was Bob's Rocks choice but he was clean shaven and looked like Bobs son as he stated and that kinda pushed the band away but he was the runner up behind Rob.
At the beginning of the movie, SKOM was the first song they worked on. Before they came up with the title Bob Rock asked James "what is this song about?" And James said it was like building a Frankenstein and says something like "I don't know....some kind of monster?" It's basically just a reference to that.
Don't get me wrong, I think that Rob is a great addition to Metallica, but it would have been interesting to see Pepper Keenan in the band. He could've completely changed Metallica's sound.
Him and james are friends but pepper even said it would have been fun but not long term . James has an ego , lars has an ego and pepper is a way better musician than both of them .
Robert's father played flamenco guitar, & so does he. Kirk was friends with Robert & told him to audition, so when Robert showed up he already had time to learn Battery & other songs. Great choice! Been a fan of Robert since early 90's! 👍
I thought so too! But this time around, the guys weren't looking for someone that "dresses" like them, they were looking for someone with the skills to play their music and the ability to get along with the band more on a personal level. So dressing in a basket ball jersey and shorts in every concert doesn't matter. As long as the bass skills are present, and thats what matters the most, IMO.
rob was by far the best choice....i like him more than Jason - much more powerful bass sound...jason was just supporting....cliff had an impact on the overall sound of metallica and they got it back (while not as great as cliff) with rob
He finished with Ozzy over a year ago, he's had an accident when trying to catch a falling amp so he's out of the scene for awhile but he's technically with voivod I think
I really miss Jason somehow... ...for his live presence - he was such an energy bundle on stage. and ...his cyco back-up vocals. His "Die" backup during Creeping Death. Rob, Kirk and Lars together don't even come close to that. But with Rob and his playing they sound much better live.
They're auditioning because they WANT to be in Metallica because they would get way more money than they currently make. Lars is well within his rights to criticize. He's the one offering the massive opportunity.
i can see what you mean about St.Anger...i personally dont like the album but in my eyes it doesnt suck...i respect your opinion because everyone is entitled to their opinion...but i like MetallicA so much i will support them no matter what..these guys changed my life..besides Death Magnetic was awesome..dont you agree?
Metallica picked Robert because he's a trooper who can take life on the road, and because the last thing James wants is some creative musician like Scott, Twiggy or Pepper.
I really like how rob just kinda stood out from the rest when they played for whom the bell tolls everyone looked kinda stiff and awkward but rob was just being himself and having a blast
I don't think Pepper would have got it simply because he is obligated to Corrosion and Down. If Jason had to leave just because of a side project, then how would the band handle their bass player being in two other full-time bands? That just wouldn't have worked. Scot would have been okay, though.
If he was picked he would’ve dropped the other two bands like a bad habit. What do you think he was doing there, hanging out for fun? Dude wanted a financial promotion
Trujillo's rendition of FWTBT was the only one past decent. But his bass sound that his fingers make is so amazing. Playing with a pick on a bass is WAY harder than finger picking anyway (except on faster songs).
to be fair, James was pretty “I, me” throughout Some Kind Of Monster too. two dudes who were larger than life going through massive character development and mid life crisis’ haha
But it's true, imagine you have guests in your house and you keep doing laundry while they are sitting over there in the living room. James kind of wanted to keep doing what he did to Jason and Lars set the record straight. Like we respect this guy or he is going to leave too.
Lars was absolutely right. They had one of the best session players in the business come to them and they stuck him in a room and ignored him for hours. It's rude and unprofessional. Lars was just being nice by not strait up calling James out for being a jerk.
When you listen to the sounds the different bassplayers have, you hear kinda "normal" bass sounds, and when robert gets on I went :O The sound is fantastic. I think his sound is better than Jason's too. But Jason fit the band more. Robert doesn't look "metal" you know. But he's awesome anyways. Jason is my favourite bass player at this point (of all bass players). But that might change over the years now.
