this is like the crisp military precision of Justice, reverb-heavy booming sound of Ride the Lightning, and the clean and even mixing of Master of Puppets all mixed together and balanced just right. this is the definitive version of blackened to me
"Millions of our years! In minutes disappears!" This song plunges you into the deepest depths of despair, yet simultaneously instills a sense that you can personally move mountains. Such a perfect choice to lead off the Justice album and the 1989 tour. I thought the arena was going to explode.
I think that AJFA is up there along with RTL or MOP as Metallica’s best album. You can tell they put their own hearts and souls into it, and to me is Metallica’s grief album after Cliff’s death
If you listen to the rough mixes from the remastered box set the majority of the bass is still there and audible. Although on some songs you don't have much vocals to any vocals, but instrumentally it's amazing
@@bryansteele832 Naah - listen to any Motorhead song or most of Pantera songs. The bass here is accurate. Audible and distinct enough and makes for a very important part for not only rhytmic but also melodic line - which is so cool. And I say it as a bassist too.
The intro to blackened is one of the best metal song intros ever written and recorded. I get goosebumps every time I hear it. It's timeless and absolutely ahead of it's time. Just my 2c.
This is one of the only remixes/remasters of this song I’ve seen on RU-vid that actually sounds like a professional mix. Most that I’ve heard have turned the bass up WAY too loud, to the point at which it’s just overwhelming and diluting of the overall sound.
eeeehhhhhhhhhhhhh it's way too loud here too. Keeps distracting me from the guitars. And the obnoxious effect on James pushing his voice back too. This is not good.
Isn't that what gives metal it raw power. Bass keeps the solid sound and intent . look at Sabbath , imagine them with geezers bass turned down. But Lars is a egomaniac
This song is pure blistering thrash. It’s about as absolutely perfect as thrash can get but when you can properly hear Jason’s bass performance there is a new level of anxiety and energy that I didn’t know I wanted. Unbelievably heavy and aggressive.
I'd rather try to imagine the songs they would've made if Cliff was still with us. To me, they should've changed their name. They're not the real Metallica any more
I am such a purist.. I usually hate remixed/remastered versions of stuff, but damnit the world needed this.. whoever did this killed it!🤘🤘🤘 That growling bass, very reminiscent of D.D. Verni (Overkill). Its a perfect fit. If that is Jason Newsted's original bass track brought to the front, James and the boys should be very ashamed of themselves for the original release.
@@Frank-ww4fo Idk man, the original bass track is available on RU-vid so I’d suspect that’s what was used here. Tone sounds exactly like Ahdy’s other remixes from this album as well. Either way it sounds fucking killer
@@User-jk8wq I thought it sounds exactly like the bass track used on the "Justice for Jason" remix which is taken from the said live show, but yeah, maybe he just replicated his studio work 100% live. Anyway, it's great and the remixed Blackened is a totally different experience from the "Ulrich" mix
Noah Ranker Dude, he simply can’t do better than this cause he doesn’t have the MASTER TRACKS. This mix isn’t exactly bad, but still is slightly worse than the original at some points. I think the guy who did this remix did a somewhat good job with what he had. I still think AJFA should be remixed, at its master tracks, to make the bass a tad bit more audible
I think that Blackened is my favorite Metallica song ( not an easy conclusion!). The intro, the riff, the lyrics, Jame's voice, the drums, the solo, the vibe, the aggression, EVERYTHING is so perfect! It changed my life!!!
This remix really highlights the pure evil that is James' vocals. I never appreciated the sheer amount of grit and growl in his voice until hearing this.
That mix is just insane! I'm hearing things I've never heard before. And the bass is not just turned all the way up like many others did, it's properly mixed here. The low-ends on the drums are a big plus too.
@Tyler Clark i loveee the solo to RTL. I just mainly have trouble with the picking patterns. my left hand can keep up with the fingerings, but i can't pick it😂
What I’ll never understand is being able to sacrifice the sound of a whole album because you can’t accept you have a new bassist after the first one tragically died.
Mirej Botica because Lars is a dick and shit on Jason. Jason’s parts in this album were master pieces of bass playing. Fuck Lars. He used to be my favorite drummer until I found better players. He’s an asshole.
@@VanAnon51 Same. When I first started playing drums he was one of my favorites...and then as I continued my musical journey, I realized he's not even top 50. And having seen him live recently it seems he can't even do half the stuff he did in the 80s and 90s anymore. I mean, come on, he's only 55!
@Cyan YT Lars was actually responsible for fucking the bass, according to mixer Steve Thompson. Lars basically said "Yeah, you know that bass track? Bring it down 7-8dB" and the rest is history. I think Jason said the bass was his fault in order to be nice and not throw Lars under the bus. And Jason's bass on Garage Days a year prior is very much audible, so it's not like it's the fault of his actual bass either.
@@VanAnon51 this song was written by jason. I dont know how people think they hated jason so much when the first song on their album was written by him. Dont think a band would do that if they hated him. Lmao
I can understand the grief over the loss of cliff and them so young with no idea on how to cope the loss of a brother, there’s no words to explain this, and the hazing part almost seems like the norm when coming in to something soo immense like Metallica, and being the new guy that takes place anywhere especially with men lol but aside all that if someone talked to these guys before fucking Jason over and told them “how do you think cliff would feel if he knew you guys were doing this to Jason?” The man that would continue carrying the torch for this group as its bass player. I don’t think cliff would approve.
I have to agree, when talking about over-all sound when a group of instruments play together the bass is turned up to loud when you hear the bass line being played through the music... (I really dont think a word of that made any bit of sense)
It's more like Jason used the wrong bass for the song. Sounds like a rickenbacker or something. Cliff used a rickenbacker but his playing style was different.
@Eternal Rambler i read as well Jason felt partly to blame. Due to playing the same frequency as James but. Loads of bassists did this in metal. I dont think he needs to carry any of the guilt for his bass being muted. His playing was exceptional on this record u can hear he was playing his soul out here probably trying to prove himself only for his efforts to be crushed. Ill only listen to bass enhanced songs off this album now. Justice for Jason..
My favourite Metallica album, listened to it over and over again, still do. Heard this and didn't know what to think at first, so used to hearing the studio version. Thought it sounded a bit like the black album, but the more I listen to it the more I'm getting used to it and the more I'm liking Justice with bass.
I agree. It sounds like maybe some slight chorus or maybe the reverb was upped - this is not the master vocal. Overall, it is like a mix of reverb and maybe a slight slapback delay, almost going for the massive sound, but it just sounds odd.
This is literally THE best remastered version of the Justice stuff I've heard. Sounds natural, not like somebody just exported the Guitar Hero baseline and threw it underneath. Props!
Best song on ...And Justice For All, in my opinion. One is a close 2nd. Oh and here are the lyrics: Blackened is the end Winter it will send Throwing all you see Into obscurity Death of Mother Earth Never a rebirth Evolution's end Never will it mend Never Fire To begin whipping dance of the dead Blackened is the end To begin whipping dance of the dead Color our world blackened Blistering of earth Terminate its worth Deadly nicotine Kills what might have been Callous frigid chill Nothing left to kill Never seen before Breathing nevermore Never Fire To begin whipping dance of the dead Blackened is the end To begin whipping dance of the dead Color our world blackened Blackened Opposition...contradiction...premonition...compromise Agitation...violation...mutilation...planet dies Darkest color Blistered earth True death of life Termination...expiration...cancellation...human race Expectation...liberation...population...lay to waste See our mother Put to death See our mother die Smoldering decay Take her breath away Millions of our years In minutes disappears Darkening in vain Decadence remains All is said and done Never is the sun Never Fire To begin whipping dance of the dead Blackened is the end To begin whipping dance of the dead Fire Is the outcome of hypocrisy Darkest potency In the exit of humanity Color our world blackened Blackened
I agree, I'd also add that To Live is To Die is incredible. I'm not sure where to place it but I find that song more beautiful than One. It's in a different category. Justice is probably my favourite Metallica album.
I really like Blackened, but AJFA has so many GOD tier songs, its insane! If I were to put a rating list it would probably go something like this: Blackened (amazing thrash masterpiece) Dyers Eve (ANOTHER incredible thrash masterpiece) Frayed Ends of Sanity (one of the best prog metal songs ever written honestly) To Live is To Die (their best instrumental, its just amazing) One (spectacular ballad, mindblowing as fuck!) And Justice for All (compliation of a ton of absolute killer) Eye of The Beholder (very unusual structure, very different from everything else, an amazinf song for sure) Shortest Straw (yet ANOTHER awesome thrash masterpiece) Harvester of Sorrow (a great heavy metal song)
Amazing take, this. Everyone mentions the bass, and the entire song sounds so good and so clean here, but the thing that REALLY elevates this version is James's vocals. They're so in-your-face and aggro. Absolutely perfect for this song.
Better than the last one! Bass is loud and audible but doesn't overshadow everything!!! Also love how much more clear the vocals are Keep up the work! do the WHOLE album The world of METAL NEEDS IT
The bass is too loud for Metallica and is clearly overshadowing the guitars and the vocals. I like the clearer (no clipping) vocals and guitars though.
Victor Mats I've always thought metallic should've turned up the bass a bit. All of their bassists have great lines. Hell, Bob Rock made sure every album, "Black Album" onwards, had audible bass If you want massive bass done right, check out "severed survival" by Autopsy
Come and play the original album on my stereo setup, and tell me where it's sounding thin..... The bass makes it sound so muddy and flubby. Lars kick drum really stands out, rather than smothered in bass guitar. Best album hands down, then MOP.
Dude you seriously have a talent remixing these metallica songs. I was so blown away with this remix that I prefer it over the original man. Incredible job 👏
It's the consequence of the bass not being heard in the original. People feel they need to have it stand out far more than it should be just to prove a point rather than musically having it centered as it ought to be.
Stereo snare, this time...? Yes! Everything sounds balanced and full. I wasn't sure how I felt about the vocals, at first, but they make everything sound spacious and wide--precisely what the original recording lacked; it was flat as a tire, this is rich and clear. The harmonies soar, that bass purrs and supports the rhythm, nothing drowns the other out. It all builds with clarity. Love it. :)
It seems like the vocals have a lot of Reverb added and technique they're using or started using after the Black Album a lot it's a great fan edit it's awesome to actually hear bass guitar they were such dicks to Jason Newsted after Cliff died we heard no base ever like barely
Same feelings here! The vocals bugged me a little at first because they sounded like they had reverb or could've been faded slightly at the end so the release wasn't as "long"... but after a few listens it fills in that space nicely where it would've otherwise been filled with, like, Lar's snares or cymbals or some shit haha.
@@Tex84 i know its a joke but cancel culture has always existed lol, just that it has only been given a name in recent years and attributed to liberals
Base or not, I cranked this album through a carver amp, top of the line realistic speakers w/ 15” woofers. Shook the house. This album was made to play at extreme volumes! Especially Blackened. 50 years old and still love the older Metallica.
I been obsessed with music since I was a little child. I had phases with different genres through out my life because Ive always been open minded with music. This entire album by Metallica is the greatest piece of artwork ever out together that I have ever heard in my entire life. And I say that with my entire soul!
Voltscream after you download it the quality of the song will be same good as an song bought from Google play or itunes. And if you use an good music player like jet audio plus the quality of the song will be 1000× better than is on you tube
Beautifully reworked. I've always thought Justice was a fantastic album, but recorded/mixed horribly. You can't hear a single note from the bass guitar on the whole record. Well done.
I remember watching a video interview with the guy that produced the album for them; evidently lars told him "turn the bass down so you can barely hear it, then lower it another 6dB"it's lars' fault you can't hear bass on the Justice album.
Ahdy's obra maestra of remastering tipping the scales to make Blackened Metallica's obra maestra. I was on the fence as to what Metallica's best song is...hearing all of the instruments at their maximum potential here tips me over to Blackened. So much to like: the goosebump-provoking intro, Jason's main riff, the breakdown and the crushing bulldozer slow riff in the middle, the bridge that evokes the chorus and blasts the 2nd half of the solo into warp drive, Lars' "happy accident" time change after the solo, Hetfield's vocals..."DAR-KEST PO-TEN CE-E-EEE!" This is peak Ahdy and peak Metallica. (No disrespect to Cliff...he definitely influenced their songwriting here.) 🔥🔥🔥
Bro this is s pretty pure and amazing remaster and remix. I love that the bass doesn’t saturate the whole mix but also doesn’t sit inaudible in the mix. It’s in there and plays the role needed. Great work
Or what he could do is give it away for free with a mandatory tip, that's so you get sued because your not selling the music but by having a mandatory tip your still making money.
Justice was and is perfect. The remaster has too much reverb on his voice, and bass too loud. Don't know if it's my cell phone, but the volume seems to swell sometimes
Saw them tour this album, it was one of the most outstanding concerts of my life. I had a stiff neck and ears ringing from the pure loudness of the gig. It was like something physical that lifted you off your feet and took you on an amazing supersonic trip. Metallica in their Hey day were unassailable.
