Honestly, the best Metallica show(s) captured live is the entire Live Shit: Binge & Purge 'experience' of nearly 6 hours of video - 4 shows, of which Seattle was two of the included stops (multiple nights,) and San Diego being the other show captured on video over multiple nights. Mexico City was the entire audio experience of over 3 hours, (5 different shows,) and is insane in its own right.
I know a lot of people prefer their older stuff. I do too but I don’t hate their newer stuff. They got older, they changed. Hetfield has struggled with addiction. Change is growth. With any aging band it’s harder to recapture the magic of youth. Not to mention the late Cliff Burton was a major influence on their early sound. I’d still be interested to hear your take on some of their later songs like Bleeding Me or even some of their covers like Turn the Page.
True, but they have become more mainstream, latest album sounds very generic, it's sad when you go on YT and see a cover of Lux Aeterna which is made with the old sound of Kill Em All and it actually sounds better than the original.
I will be the first to admit: I do NOT like their music POST Load and Reload. However, I have to admit thats just my personal opinion and preference. There are other Metallica fans that like their newer stuff and love the older stuff. We can all co-exist in peace and love the music. 😊
The Black album was the line drawn in the sand for many. I'm 50. I saw Metallica in 2 different venues in Denver in the 80's that have been long since raised to the ground. Their fans had a hard time with anything after the Black album if you had been a fan up to that point. So your taste and assessment is spot on!
You like the older Metallica. You just earned a new subscriber. Rock on Sister. Rock on. 🤘😎🤘 Edited to add: YES. They took their time took you (the listener) on a journey. Thats why old school Metallica fans like myself (pre-Load/Reload) got so pissed when they “sold out” and made shorter songs for radio. Everything up to 1996 is AMAZING. After that, SHIT.
My favorite version of this song played live by far is the “cliff them all” version, August 85. This whole show at Seattle is epic, but especially master of puppets. Seattle 89 is my favorite live version of master of puppets. Check out “cliff them all”. You got to see Cliff Burton. Legend.
During the Black Album days, James blew out his vocal chords singing the cover So What and had to relearn how to sing using proper techniques. He almost had to retire from singing. I think that had a lot to do with his change in voice from previous albums. Its crazy to think that before that happened, he never really had proper training.
I totally get where you're coming from with your feelings towards "new" Metallica. I saw them for the first time on this tour in Atlanta and it's one of the most memorable Metallica concerts that I've seen, and I've seen 11 of them. Old Metallica was just a different vibe.
Metallica is one of the GREATEST live bands to ever step on a stage. Ask not for whom the bells tolls, it tolls for thee. They’re better live than in studio.
Hi you are very wrong about what you are saying. You need to do some research on why he doesn't sing like he did back then and why his vocals are different these days. He wouldn't be singing at all to this day if it wasn't for the changes he maid to preserve his voice. And he has so many people talking about how his voice is better with the age he is ás the one of the best metal front men of all time.
I agree with you that the old Metallica is just extra special and the new stuff really hasn't done it for me either except maybe a few songs here and there. However, I do encourage you to listen to a few of the songs on the 72 seasons album the new one. About six of the songs are kind of annoying, but the other six really grow on you, and two of those six are fantastic and I enjoy listening to them over and over. We don't mind if you listen to the 72 seasons songs, react to them (the music videos) and if you don't like something to say nope doesn't do it for me and go to the next one because I really think that since you like the old Metallica, and some of their songs on this new album actually are really in the old style in many ways, I think you'll like some of these songs. Hope to you though. I respect your decision either way. Take care and thanks for reacting well to For whom the Bell tolls, one of my favorite songs as well :-)
I'm with you on the old vs new Metallica. They lost me after Justice, and that's OK, because I have four great albums plus some EP's to enjoy prior to their shift.
I wasn't at this concert, but I was at another on this same tour. Toronto, 1990. 12 years old and already hooked on this incredible thing called heavy metal.
What are you talking about. His voice is still great. He sv60 years old. React to 72 season thre song. Its no old or new metallica. Go to gig miss and tell me he s voice is no good. U are way 2 young. I have seen them in 83,84,85,86,87,88,89,91,every tour.
@7:14 I was "there" (maybe not this particular show, but around this time) and not only is the ground vibrating but the air is. I remember being aware that every kick drum beat my pant legs slammed into my shins. Not kidding.
True. I never cared much for the album version, but the live performance from this concert really made me appreciate this song. Blew me away, to be specific.
You're so right about the glaring differences between classic, badass Metallica and newer/bland/uninspired Metallica. It was all downhill after the Black Album. But for those first few albums they were off the charts.
I think one of their greatest song was off the Black album, the song is called Sad But True, heavy song with interesting lyrics with a twist which a lot of reviewers miss.
Of course their new stuff isn't as great as their old stuff that's 9 times out of 10 the case for most bands who've been playing for 30+ years but still can't deny they been putting out good content still at age 60
The opening comment is utter nonsense. The idea that not playing thrash means Hetfield was being conformist is baseless rubbish. How can you possibly listen to songs like Outlaw Torn, Fixxxer, Bleeding Me, etc. and make that claim? I get the awful impression that some thrash/early Metallica elitist has gotten in your ear and told you everything they did after 1988 was "selling out".
Great analogy, but your thought process is flawed. It wasn't being commercialised. James was finally starting to cope with the death of his mother, AND Cliff Burton's tragic death. With him starting to finally find some semblance of peace within himself, the ANGER that drove him and thus the bands music in that time had subsided.and thus the music changed. But it wasn't ever bad, until the St.Anger album, that one sucked ass. And I still don't get what your problem is with his vocals. The guy can belt it out and scream for the sky or tone it down and lulaby you to sleep with his softness and melodies.
Justice was the first album of Metallica I listened to all the way through and it’s become the gold standard of their discography for me. I don’t think any of their albums quite reached that level of creativity, IMO. That being said, Metallica is my favorite metal band. James’s voice definitely changed over the years, the justice/black album voice being at the peak of his vocal intensity (IMO). From Load onwards, he definitely adopted a more traditional vocal approach. He started incorporating a country twang, occasionally which he grew out of by St. Anger, but his voice has never quite been the same since the early nineties. I can’t stand hearing newer versions of NEM (from the black album) that twang shows up when he sings certain sustained notes and it bugs me to hear. It sounds out of key to my ears.
Youth is a powerful thing...this is them in their prime no doubt but Metallica have played so many awesome shows over their 40 years of playing... you should try some songs from Death Magnetic (Quebec Live) you may like some of that stuff.
So, I’m summary, it’s not really about his voice overall it’s about the change stylistically the band has gone through and how his technique has changed over the years to save his voice and how his voice plays against the different style of composition now employed.
I was there at that concert and again in 92. In 92, I'm on video head bunting James and screaming in his face bc I missed the microphone. James was letting the audience participate during Seek and Destroy. Oops. My bad James. Sorry.
I do agree and I think most fans of Metallica would agree that the older stuff is better. But I do think some of there newer songs are great. I just think the older stuff is better.
metallica's new album just came out a couple weeks ago and they preformed some of the new songs live on Howard and kimmel last week.... i highly recommend checking it out
Dont know why anyone in the comments hasn't mentioned this but if you want the real full original Metallica experience of this song then i suggest u watch the Cliff Burton 85' live performance. Not only is that performance better but Jame's voice was more aggressive and the energy and intensity was off the charts. You're truly missing out if u dont watch that performance.
MTV did a show called "Icons" years ago honoring icons of the music industry. They did a show on Metallica where a number of different bands covered Metallica songs. My personal favorite is Limp Bizkit covering Sanatarium. I see you like LB and Metallica and thought you might be interested in watching the performance. Type "Limp Bizkit Sanatarium" in the search bar and enjoy. Maybe another reaction video??
Exactly how I feel about Metallica, incl James’ voice … the Black album in 91 was where it started to change, and was where they lost me. BUT… up til then, phenOMenal!
@@Msatty3Irks means annoy. If you’re a Metallica fan and someone is negatively reviewing their stylistic change from 30 years ago and calling it NEW, that should annoy you.
Kathryn, you need to start listening to them with their newer stuff. Know why? Because from their *Hardwired... To self-destruct,* it sounds more similar to their older stuff. *BACK TO THEIR THRASHY WAYS!!!* 🤘⚡⚡⚡
Having grown up in the 80's and early 90's, I was there every step of the way with Metallica and I think context has a lot to do with some of us older folks preferring their pre-black album era. We saw the band progress with each album and peak with ...And Justice For All. I consider myself fortunate to have witnessed Metallica live on that tour in 1989. It was the perfect time because they could play a two hour, twenty song set and every single song was a fan favorite. Now, imagine the anticipation for the next album. We sat down and listened to the black album and were like, "WTF?" It wasn't a forward progression. It wasn't horrible but it definitely didn't feel like that slow burning, dark, dangerous, angry, heaviness we had come to know and love AND expect. Guess their first mistake was going with Bon Jovi's producer. But honestly, I quit paying attention to what they did after that. You never see anyone react to their eyeliner and short hair period. You're absolutely right that they conformed and started trying to fit in. They were never about that in the 80's.
Completely agree I tried with the black album I saw Metallica when they were touring between Black and what load album or whatever and apparently the band got tired of playing songs off the Black album because they played for a solid two hours plus and only two songs were from the black album. For me the loss of Cliff was the bands falling. His love for Classical music and the ideas of musical structure and theory he showed James and Lars really showed up as the songs continued to progress. Not to Mention the way Cliff shreds that bass Guitar intro is a sound never to be matched. After the Black album and then Lars and James controlling ways and selling out to the industry. Add in their fight to kill Napster and music sharing I am surprised that any newer Metallica is ever reacted to on RU-vid for fear that the two of them be like that's our music and we deserve to profit for the use of it. "We sell records so you buy them not to just share and make copies for our fans will always be true and support our fight" What a sad ending in my book for what once was the best in thrash metal in 80's. Luckily, I found solace in the form of Slayer and although I will never stop listening to early Metallica, corporate sell outs and a poor attitude is all I find in the new Metallica.
I don't understand the old Metallica vs new Metallica. I like both old and new the same. Some of my favorite songs are on Death Magnetic (2008), check out Unforgiven 3, so awesome. Hardwired to Self-Destruct (2016) another awesome album. I don't see James as selling out and changing his style. Basically every song is a unique work of art and James has stuck to that.
This song was written before 1987. In 1986 Metallica lost their bassplayer. He was killed in a tourbus-accident in Sweden. The bassplayer who replaced Cliff Burton, (Jason Newstedt) gave the other Metallica members some music lessons. This changed the music writing within Metallica. (For example their album Load (1996). Maybe this is what you are experiencing, listening to Metallica. When Jason left the band (2001), their sound changed again. Myself, i lost interested in Metallica when their album Load was released.
Hetfield's raw, raging, pre- _Load_ voice is also my preference, and I was never a big fan of anything post 'Black Album'... but... _The Unforgiven III_ has gone a long way toward placating me. And I like some of Metallica's post 'Black Album' stuff, just not for the same reasons I like the pre- _Load_ records. I know next to nothing about _St. Anger_ (I _hate_ that springless snare) or beyond. I'm not really interested in any of it, either, and I'm healthily conflicted about that. But as a Gen-X metalhead, I have personal experience with getting a flat driving through the Valley of the Shadow of Death, and I say: if your choices are either A: constant pain, heavy self-medication, followed by a self-unaliving, or B: 'selling out,' then _buddy..._ take the money, go on vacation, and _relax._ Given my druthers, I'd rather have a living sell-out than a dead legend. Hetfield may now be a country singer in a shell of a metal band, but he's _alive,_ and if you resent that, you can go right ahead and fuck _all_ the way off. Nope, that's still not off-fucked enough, but another 3.75% further should help. Yeah, you plop right down there next to Mustaine's cancer and Lars' snare, that'll be fine for now. I can't get into Metallica's new stuff, but that's on me. They were there for me when I needed them back in the day, though. I still have those records. They're here for whoever needs them now. If that isn't us, then we'll probably be okay. ... After a proof-read... I suspect I've been awake too long again. May edit this later.
Listen to their albums Death Magnetic (The Day That Never Comes, Cyanide, That Was Just Your Life) and Hardwired (Hardwired To Self-destruct, Atlas Rise). Those albums are vastly different than Load, Reload, and St. Anger.
Every video I see of Metallica live makes them look and sound amazing, but the only time I got to see them live (around 30 years ago on the Black Album tour) they were terrible. To be fair, it wasn't 100% the band's fault though. The sound quality at the venue was awful (James' vocals and Kirk's guitar couldn't be heard at all) and the venue had a no standing policy, so 90% of the crowd were sitting down through the entire show which made for a weird, almost non-existent atmosphere. The band must've known it was a terrible gig too because they haven't been back since.
What it means ..To do for Metallica 1 last shot!?..Then I need to ask..R U understand the music?!:)..there is no lasts shots 4 Metallica..they will be 4 ever..dont worry,im still UR subscriber..:)..all respect 2 U..:)
Metallica were excellent from 83-93 whrn they all had hair. Best lineup on record was with cliff, but live 100% when Jason was in band. Something happened after they cut their hair, james' voice changed and they started playing bluesy rock.
Pre-blackAlbum Metallica is the only Metallica for me. That's what I grew up with, what's who paved the way for other metal bands, and they were fearless and more genuine in their creativity. Master of Puppets was their peak, Justice was their lingering greatness (sans Cliff Burton) pumping out one last great album, and Black Album was when they were began milking the dying horse. Enter Sandman and Sad But True and the whole rest of the Black Album just felt like they were trying too hard but coming up short. It didn't have the darkness, weight, menace, and sense of grandeur of all their prior works. It's like they were no longer the same band, but a different group of people who sounded like them and tried to make a music career, mimicking their instruments & voice. Since then it's just been more of the same, and they no longer had my attention. To this day, listening to Master of Puppets, and One, and Creeping Death, and a few others all have a physical effect on me. They're truly legendary.
Why is it not acceptable for James Hetfield to be into other music other than metal?! James is influenced by many types of music, from punk to country....I believe that makes him way more multi-faceted than any other singer/song writer out there....how cool is it that James made the first metal/country song in "Mama Said?" And don't even get started on his mama....James is complicated dude that makes his problems into masterpiece metal songs...I think knowing more about who James Hetfield is will make you appreciate him more and the music that he writes
James hetfield has always done his own thing. James hetfield s voice changed over the years as does All men. For example Al Pacino his voice is different from the 70's you are holding his voice against him?? The male voice changes will age.check out Christopher Walken he's another one who's voice is much more different than it was in the 70's as well. And the newer Metallica builds up just as much as "old" Metallica. You are just nitpicking reasons to not like "new" Metallica 🤦
You, being the new listener, have absolutely hit the nail on the head. Metallica was an amazing band up until 1990/1991 when they got a new producer named Bob Rock. With his 'guidence' they left the thrash metal world they lived in and moved into the popular music realm. IMHO, their last decent album was Justice, while the Black album and everything else has been pretty much garbage. Stick to the first four albums when they wrote what they wanted to write and not what some record company asshole thought would sell.
I am 10000000% on the same page as you. When James Hetfield stopped sounding like a Drill Sergeant and tried to fit the commercial standard vocally is when Metallica started to Suck... My opinion...
That might be the most ignorant comment I have ever heard about Metallica. "Fitting societal expectations..." Or whatever, there isn't another album that sounds like st Anger, thankfully, but that is not fitting into societal anything. They knew damn well that album sounded harsh. I have little idea where you could have pulled such a comment.
This is before they sold out to commercialism with the 'Black Album', but Ulrich in particular is already starting to disappear up his own arse thinking he's some sort of drum god and playing a different track to the others with all sorts of unnecessary fills and snare hits. They've never been the same band since Cliff died, and everything after AJFA is just plain crap.
Im pretty old, gave up on Metallica after the black album...like other bands before and since they went soft to make money off the the light generations. I was huge Kiss fan in the mid 70s then they came out with whatever that disco crap album was...done...same with Metallica...as my wife used to say stay hard or go away
I was there in Seattle and in 92. There's a video online of that show and it shows me screaming in James' face during Seek and Destroy towards the end of the show. You're right. Early metallica was best and he changed his voice after losing it during a show. It's not the same but they're still metallica.
If you don't like Metallica don't like Metallica you shouldn't be hurting people's feelings about it not every song is for everyone. Like me personally I can't stand David Bowie but that's just my opinion
