Regarding soldiers hitting people: They weren't the KGB. The KGB in Russia was like the FBI or the CIA, so nothing to do with taking care of people in a show or military stuff. So, hey probably were police officers. Now consider that the communism ended in Russia on December 25, 1991, so during the show, the country still had that dictatorial culture.

The wall came down, and the Russian people finally got treated to music from the West, and as luck would have it the greatest metal show of all time!!!

Metallica's 1991 live from Moscow made history by having 1.6 million people making it their biggest live show of all time.

This is my favorite live version of this song. I’m so glad that James kept going after his pyro accident on fade to black (not this concert) Dark days , we didn’t know if Metallica was done or not back then.

There was 1.2 million fans there and I was right down the front,it was a killer show and madd some great Russian friends out there, it was mind blowing to know there was over 1.2 million people behind us,once the word got to those soldiers it was a mosh pit they started joking in it was amazing

In articles and interviews from that time, Heftield and Ulrich describe this song as the blueprint for what they wanted the entire "Black Album" to sound like: each song a single riff pounded into the ground. Up until that time, most of their songs on the first four albums were two or even three different riffs stitched together to form songs...some of them quite long. During the ...And Justice for All tour they got quite tired of playing these endless songs. One article even quoted Hetfield as screaming "we're never playing THAT f*ing song again!" (or words to that effect) as he came offstage at the last stop for the ...Justice tour (referring to the title song of that album, I believe). Of course I'm sure they've played it plenty since then, but they took a break from playing it for many years...

Another quick little fact that wasn't included... did you notice Lars dropped his sticks and ran at the end instead of sticking around for some flourishes? Breaking that pause, he sliced his thumb wide open on the kit and was flinging blood everywhere until the end of the song. Played right through it though!

I would be willing to sell my soul to go back to see this concert. I have seen Metallica live 9 times, amazing every time.

This was always my favourite version, they slowed the song down and really brought the "krunch" for the whole Black Album tour. Jason was happy to have some bass back in some Justice For All songs...
