I always answer this to whomever sayas Jason never actually fit in Metallica. He did was he was taken to do in the band. The fact that James, Kirk and Lars never got over Cliff Burton's death isnot his fault. He really was patient and tolerated a lot from those never grown up assholes. They even dare to say at the castings when they were about to decide in favor of Robert Trujillo, that they "didnt have that feeling since Cliff". Ungrateful bastards. Yeah sure, you never sounded with Good bass during Jason Newsted's era. You just made about 60 millions copies from "...And justice for all all the way till St. Anger), just about 15 years. Cliff Burton's time in Metallica was just 5 years. And they moan it three times that time, making a hell of a life for Jason, just because he took the dead basist place in the band. Talking about childish behaviour. And for 15years he stood there with the remorse of his "partners" who never actually embrace him because of the previous member's memory. This is how you DO NOT EMBRACE A NEW MEMBER AND MAKE HIS LIFE A LIVING HELL. Hope he now is in some place where he is really appreciated.

Why does being an "old school" Metallica fan, have anything to do with not liking their later music? Their later music is bad ass.

I can see the bass drum as an attempt at giving it more of a classic rock sound or something. The snare came from nu metal I guess. I connect St. Anger with the whole garage revival thing going on at the time. In the early '00s it was "cool" to sound shitty.
